“A little learning is a dangerous thing. Drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring. ” Alexander Pope Huntsville High Huntsville, Alabama PIERIAN With the advent of fall, life once more breathes through this hollow shell, new faces and old gathering into such a personality as shall never again grace these halls. Autumnal celebration surrenders to wintry magic as pulse quickens and consciousness grows. A path is marked to a rhythm all its own. a thousand feet following the beat of a single heart towards the culmination of a single dream. An empty whisper of a wind drifts slowly along barren window panes, dark and hungry; alone it stands, held still in silent stasis. Eager anticipation swells with the promise of final triumph. Learning, laughing, crying, come to swift climax in joyous festival of spring; then a collective sigh given in sad repose. As the years flow by and our time together fades into nostalgic haze, we can only hope we have captured the fondest of memories. This one’s for you! ROTC’s spirit soars! The 1986 Homecoming weekend highlights a wave of school spirit. Our football team played well in a valiant effort against Lee. Halftime festivities, accented by many floats, culminated in the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, Geraldine Jamieson. Student Council continued their long time tradition in sponsoring another successful dance. The festive theme of Mardi Gras was enhanced with colorful decorations as MIA provided the raucous music. Geraldine officially crowned Homecoming Queen 1986. Homecoming Court: Sara Luther. Mr. Max Luther. Julie VanValkcnburgh. Mr. Richard VanValkcnburgh, Mary Shea Buchanan. Mr. Dan Buchanan. These benefits include generating school spirit, providing school activities, improving school conditions and aiding other organizations that are in need. One of the objectives that Student Council kept in mind this year was to attempt to revive the declining school spirit. Biweekly jams and constant support of organizations were just a few attempts to keep the student morale up. The Mardi Gras festival served as the theme for the Council’s annual Homecoming dance. The dance proved to be a major success not only for the Council, but in raising money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Not as successful was the Student Council’s Christmas Dance which, despite early student support, had to be cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. However, the Council managed to reach its goal of improving school spirit. But the year possessed a flavor of its own, too, proposing new forms of traditional ideas. While Honor Society, as a service project, has supplied tutors to any who might need them, this year, in mid-January, the organization offered a new angle on this opportunity. The week preceding exams, the library was kept open in the evenings while Honor Society members and teachers voluntarily assisted students studying for exams. In this spirit. Honor Society was created, requiring more than mere grade averages for acceptance, but such qualities as leadership, character, service, and, of course, scholarship. The Huntsville High chapter, currently forty-nine years old, bears a proud heritage in all of these areas, a heritage that is a reflection of the school it serves. Each member is required to donate volunteer service hours each six weeks, such as ushering at matinee performances of the Broadway Theater League. The club also sponsors the Annual Beauty Walk, the proceeds of which are allocated to school and community projects. Of course, it has its social benefits as well, seen in such activities as the notorious Delta-Key Week and pizza parties. New members are chosen and initiated into the club in the spring. Debate Shows Promise The forensic program, long a success at Huntsville High, enjoyed progress last year that left high hopes for this seasons competitions. Led by NOTE Scholar Benjii Bittle, the many returning seniors promised to lead the way to an exemplary year. Unfortunately, the team’s ranks thinned of experienced debaters and many of their high hopes were unfulfilled. Still, the squad managed to maintain its high standards, and with a large growth in interest this year, next year's class again shows great promise. Highlights of the convention included an All-Star Cast play, the make-up artist Bob Kelly, and a special performance of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Thirteen members attended under the direction and threat of their sponsor. Dr. Von Tiesenhausen, assisted by chaperones and a student teacher, Mrs. Lynn O'Brien. The trip was not only great fun, but quite a learning experience. April 25 finally saw the performances of By the Waters of Babylon. Although initial interest was weak at first, it turned out to be a great success. Cletus Weti even learned his lines ... David Butler gave his grandfatherly performance as the old Indian, while Annary Aytch played the beautiful girl. Lisa Carter was the wise spirit as Stephanie Heath led the chorus to remind Cletus and Annary that It is forbidden ...! Next year's goal is, of course, to obtain Drama classes during the day. Long before the school year had started, staff members were formulating the ideas that were to become Pierian ’86, even coming home with an award for best copy in a competition among various schools. Once the school year began, the staff was ready to work on deadlines, goals pursued conscientiously and successfully throughout the year. Now that this publication is complete, the staff hopes that you have found their efforts to be timely and an example for staffs to come. 65 SPONSOR AND EDITOR Mrs. Janice Starkey. Spectrum has been named the top literary magazine in the state by the Alabama Scholastic Press Association. At national contests. Spectrum has consistently earned first place rankings, lacking ten points of one thousand for a perfect score at one contest. Such critical success has been the result of several factors: the dedication of the magazine's staff and sponsor, the enthusiastic support of community members, and, above all, the talent and abilities of Huntsville High's students and teachers. As long as such emphasis continues. Spectrum can expect to do well. Last year, the magazine incorporated a theme into its pages, and this year, to use more of the material submitted to the staff, a new, larger format was introduced. In this manner. Spectrum will continue to innovate and improve, hopefully to always be a successful representation of Huntsville's artistic talents. BUSINESS AND MARKETING — Shannon Sanders — Business Manager. Each appearance is a new and innovative routine; this dedication is the result of pride and hard work. For this reason, the team elects a Pantherette of the Month, whose picture is presented in the front hallway. Of course, school events are not the only focus of the team’s calendar, as they appeared both in the Annual Christmas Parade and at civic meetings. The team created the same popular reception in the community that was enjoyed within the school. Competition and success are also very important to the squad members. Huntsville High hosted the Alabama State Championships this year; also, the team attended a national contest in the spring. After this long and successful year, try-outs were held and new members named as the Pantherettes completed 1986 and prepared for 1987. SENIORS — Brandi Corum, Cynthia Rich. Performing at school and community events, the group is enjoying a growing popularity among the students and respect in the musical community. However, individual performances have been spectacular as well, with choir members in both all-city and all-state choirs. Also, Molly Burns, Eric Jobe, and Chris Hamilton were nominated as Outstanding Choral Students, while was additionally named All-City Outstanding Choral Student 1985 and Alabama Vocal Association District 5 Male Solo Winner. We realize fully in this our race That none may deserve a winning place. That place is there, toward it we go, But to win a race, one must know how to row. 237 239 May we know that the one who thinks he can Is supreme — the world’s ever-needed man. So let us think big and let our thoughts grow, Rather than think small, or on levels low. May we think that we can — so that he will, Let vision and courage be added to skill. We’re rowing not drifting on life’s ocean wide. With strokes firm and steady, we pull against the tide. We fight for success; for we realize They fear not a fall, who never rise. Our goal, the dim shore; the fog now is lifting. We bend to our oars, we’re rowing not drifting. Leigh Hereford Class Poet 241 PEPSI MADISON CO.
