John Walthall, Don Broome, Ley Fletcher THE RECORD 1984 6A State Champions Tillman Williams 1st Antioch 2nd Monte Sano 1st Winnataska 1st Sun Fresh 1st John Carrol 1st CITY 1st STATE 1st The red striped shorts were the color to watch in Alabama cross country in 1984. The Huntsville boys proved to again be the best in the state, and the girls improved their finish position throughout the season with more and better talent. The varsity boys dominated the competition in the state as no team had in recent years. At the City Meet they took the first five places for a perfect score of 15, with John Walthall, Terry Young, Don Broome, Tcja McKiernan, Ley Fletcher, and Wesley Wilson making All-City. Their total score of 38 at the State Meet was a record low for a large school state competition. Five male runners, Walthall, Young, McKiernan, Broome, and Mike Dodd, made All-State by finishing among the top 15. The varsity girls finished 5th at State with a squad composed mostly of sophomores, and with a good freshman girls' squad coming up next season, the girls should move up even higher in 1985. Laura Hayes made both All-City and All-State. The two freshman squads had some of the best talent in recent years. Clint Byers and Ken Pugh were among the top finishers in all races they ran this season, and Christa Jennings made All-City as a freshman. The girls freshman squad was almost as large as the varsity, and if these girls continue to run, they could be the strongest in the state. 119 Men’s Varsity Clinches 8th in State WZtm V A 1 Varsity Basketball Team: First Row: Parker Griffith.
