“A little learning is a dangerous thing. Drink deep or taste not the Pierian spr Alexander Pope PIERIAN 1973 Huntsville High School Huntsville, Alabama Awards LIN UEST-05T Athletics Academics 4 It began even before the first day of school, the preparations to make this year different. There were those who worked long and hard to initiate our club day, the first ever. More than fifteen new clubs were organized. A special assembly before opening day served to orientate the new freshmen. Anchor and Key clubs diligently cut, cleaned, weeded, and trimmed the inner court, and the boys even tackled the parking lots. Early in the fall, plans for resuming the Homecoming Dance were completed, and regular class assemblies and a Halloween Carnival were also added to the calendar. All these contributed in making HHS more than just a school . . . a place to belong and be proud of. 5 School had barely begun when we found ourselves in the midst of a colorful, challenging football season. United and excited, we placed our pride on the line and yelled ourselves hoarse. We did not always win but we gained even more by just sticking together. 5 6 7 With all our various papers, pencils and projects, we soon learned how to apply ourselves. We really had to work, but the rewards we reaped were well worth it. All the preparation for drama performances, football and basketball practice, meeting publication deadlines, drill team practice, all the endless decorating committees, struggling to meet the goal for magazine sales — were they all work? We can testify that they were, but we cannot deny that working with our friends has brought us closer to each other, ourselves and our school. t 9 10 We learned to mix work with the good times. All the planned activities such as the Senior Barbeque and the Homecoming Dance were great fun, but so were those crazy unplanned times. Just being together with no responsibilities served to unite us. 11 We had become a part of the whole. Whether it was as an individual, a couple or a group. We all belonged to HHS and it to us. 12 13 Awards Athletics BERLIN Academics fvities '73 Seniors Excel Front Row: Patsy Perry, Libby Powell. Melanie Belew, Inge Hinrichs, Jan Meigs. Marian Weil. The year started off with a bang with the magazine sales, which proved to be a marvelous success. Sales were followed by the barbecue. The year was sprinkled with interesting Senior Assemblies, the highlight being that famous assembly on Senior Supressed Desire Day. With everyone in their daydream garb, the make-believe Ed Sullivan Show was a great way to pull Seniors together. Through the spring, caps and gowns were ordered, along with other graduation preparations. In mid-February, forty government students journeyed to Washington to see the informative sights. The whole exciting year culminated with Graduation itself. The 1972-73 Seniors have left their mark on Huntsville High. Seniors off to Washington for government trip. Key Club, an extremely active all-boy service club here at Huntsville High, has again made good use of its helpful purpose. On top of projects including March of Dimes, the Sheriff’s Boys’ Ranch and programs for Muscular Dystrophy research, Key Club has contributed much to our school. They periodically clean up the grounds, as well as gathering wood for bonfires and ushering at various school functions such as the Beauty Walk. 61 Co-ed Interact Polishes The Interact Club is one of the older service organizations at Huntsville High School. This last year, Interact broke their previous all male membership rule and went co-ed. They have focused their service activities on helping the school, and have made it a project to keep the A.V. Room clean. They also have ushered for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra performances here at our school. Jimmy and Nancy chuckle over Interact program. Walter leads discussion as girls take notes. Nike Club, a girl’s service club here at Huntsville High School, meets monthly in the Group II section of clubs in the new club system. Their main project came around Christmas time. Through various service projects, the girls raised money to give to a needy family of eight. This gift contributed greatly to this family’s happiness on this holiday. Named after the missile found here at Redstone Arsenal, the Nike Club maintains its service purpose throughout the whole year. Jubilant players carry Coach Owen off field after victory. It’s a tight squeeze for Willie. Water boy waits for customer. CBC Ramble’s Red Our opening game turned out for the worst, as Christian Brothers Catholic of Memphis overpowered Big Red. Even though it was a defeat, HHS did have some high points — Phil Benefield (junior fullback) went 56 yards in 14 carries. It was he who had the honors for our only touchdown. HHS had a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, but was unable to hold on. During the second quarter, Robert Toney came off the field with a broken foot. This signaled bad times for the Panthers. “We just got whipped physically. They manhandled us and wore us down. They had some monsters,” Coach Owen stated. Keathley poses threat to CBC. 114 Panthers recover fumble. Baylor Rips by Huntsville’s Big Red, looking for its first victory, travelled to Chattanooga to face Baylor. Late in the first quarter, Baylor scored their beginning TD. By the third quarter they had their 21 points while HHS fought it out to hold their end. Mike Keathley ground out 80 yards in 13 carries as the top runner of the game. The Panthers came as close as the 11 yard line twice in the second half. With a final score 27-0, the Panthers left the field in despair. The Big Red Panthers put it to Lee. With the Generals leading at the end of the third quarter, 13-0, the fired up Huntsville team stopped the Generals cold. When Benefield came through on a 40-yard punt return early in the fourth quarter, the Huntsville High Panthers came to life. In just three runs, Mike Keathley brought the ball over the line. Ralph Stubblefield’s PAT was good, bringing the score to 13-7. With about five minutes remaining in the game, Benefield broke loose with a 20-yard run and was brought down at the one. Red Explodes The Crimson Panthers cashed in a touchdown in each of the four quarters against the misjudging Talladega team. Huntsville’s first score came when Curt Geller converted a Talladega fumble into a 29-yard touchdown. After a bad snap, Talladega punter Roy Bonds was forced to run with the football, setting up the second touchdown. Poor execution of the kicking game also led to Huntsville’s third score, in the third period. The Panthers blitzed through and blocked a Talladega punt, which David Bradley recovered in the end zone for six points. With just 25 seconds before the end of the game, Van Elmore plunged over the line from one yard for the HHS’s final touchdown. Panthers kick off to Talladega. 117 Keathley runs into Yellow Jacket. HHS Perks Coffee As the wins kept building up, the Panthers squeezed by the Coffee Yellow Jackets. Mike Keathley was the game’s offensive star with 16 carries for 91 yards including the 41 yard touchdown run. The first Huntsville series was the highlight of the whole game. The Big Red took over on its own 44-yard line and drove 56 yards in only four plays. This drive proved to be the winning points. Due to one of Huntsville’s fumbles, the Yellow Jackets were able to squeeze in 3 points, with just 11 seconds in the first half. The closest chance at another touchdown came in the third quarter when Frank Campbell pounced on a Coffee fumble on their 35. The Big Red was hit with a 5-yard penalty, and Coffee picked off a pass which ended the drive. Coach Owen reads play. Rebels charge in a little late. 1)8 Reb’s Romp Big Red Butler looked like the football team many expected them to be at the start of the season. The fighting Big Red defense forced Butler into a field goal situation, and senior Brad Gilbert converted a 26-yard attempt with 4:30 left in the first period. The offensive standout for Huntsville had to be the performance of junior Scott Cox. The 6'0 165-pounder sparked what offense Huntsville had in the second half with five crushes for 42 yards. Huntsville scored two touchdowns in the first quarter, another in the second, and a final in the fourth. Scott Cox, starting his first game at quarterback, directed Huntsville to a score the first time it got possession. Utilizing the cunning of Keathley and Eddie Lewis, the Panthers moved to the four. Lewis took it over with 5:11 left in the initial period. Ralph Stubblefield kicked the first of four PAT’s to make it 7-0. After the kick-off, Big Red got a hold of the ball at the Austin 43. Then Cox hit Keathley with a 37-yard pass to the three. Cox scored on a keeper on the next play. The Panthers powered through the whole game, totaling 28 points. The Tigers fumbled in their end-zone where David Bradley claimed it for the Crimson Panthers. Ralph Stubblefield came aboard to successfully kick the seventh point, which turned out to be the winner. Jeff Rodgers covered a loose bobble for the Panthers at Gadsden’s 35 early in the third period to present Huntsville with a golden opportunity to do some scoreboard business. Willie Crutcher ran 15 yards (the night’s longest run) on the first play to the 20. Robert Sampson, Roger Shippey, James Williams, Alan Rosenbloom, Bill Johnson, and Jeff Rodgers were busy and impressive defenders for the Panthers. 121 HHS Crushes Orange Great Scott (Cox)! What a victory for Huntsville High. Cox accounted for 267 yards rushing on 13 carries and 141 passing on six of seven pass completions with none intercepted. The list of defensive standouts would certainly include Curt Geller, Steve Binford, James Williams, Jeff Rodgers, and Bill Johnson. The Big Red defense sacked quarterback Bobby Williams four times for minus 33 yards. The first Panther TD was set up by a Grissom turnover. Geller recovered a Tiger fumble on Grissom’s second offensive play of the game. Huntsville faced a fourth-and-14 situation 25 seconds later. Cox hit Rosenbloom on a beautiful TD play. Ralph Stubblefield kicked the first of three straight PAT’s and Huntsville led 7-0 with the game only one-half minutes old. The final Huntsville score also looked in jeopardy. Though the Panthers had driven 50 yards to the Grissom 31, two plays later they faced a third-and-24 at the Grissom 43. Cox, with enough time to shell peanuts, hit Lewis coming out of the backfield at the Grissom 25, who made an impressive run to the end zone. Huntsville grounds Grissom. 122 HHS runner sees hole. On the first Huntsville drive, Big Red rolled to the Decatur 9-yard line behind the running of Cox and Eddie Lewis. It stopped there after a 15-yard penalty, then an interception. After the Red Raider’s did their damage in the third quarter, Big Red pressed on desperately for a win. Stubblefield brought the Panthers to the Decatur 11 on a drive that carried 73 yards, but it died at the 11. When time ran out, the score was 7-0, in Decatur’s favor. 123 J.V.’s and Freshmen Develop I u Junior Varsity Team — First row: Mike MacMillian, Cy Huffman. Jim Bolt. Mark Leberte, Berry Looser.
