She demonstrates by her work in Student Council the rare virtues of self discipline and initiative. Becca's serious sense of purpose has not dulled her enthusiasm; enthusiasm great enough to make the sports fans around her wonder and intense enough to deny her half a night's sleep after a lost basketball game. To me, what is most outstanding of all is her willingness to share, risk, and sacrifice what she has in an effort to help and understand others. Pete Holby Turn outstanding'' around and you get standing out — that is Pete in a nutshell. He has dedicated much of his three years at Huntsville High to us, the students, through Student Council by working to make the school a desirable one to attend. Always there with open ear and mind, he has given everyone a chance to express their own ideas and opinions. I'm always amazed at the great amount of fairness he is able to use in making a decision. Pete is a dedicated and conscientious leader; He has shown his uniqueness in everything he has done and in my opinion is indeed the most outstanding senior boy. Led by lightning-quick Duffy Boles and fleet-footed Gary Clements, the Big Red unleashed a devastating ground attack to compliment Jeff Smith's passing wizardry. The offense, with 212 total yards, showed they were something to be reckoned with throughout the season. The defense, led by burly Bob Davis and awesome Dee Cumbaa, stymied every Tiger drive and allowed only 1 2 net yards. The Big Red got off to a fine start this season and, as Coach Owen mildly put it, showed a little class. 48 Panfhere Squelch Dragon's Fire Huntsville uncorked o balanced offensive attack and a stout ground defense to defeat Wenonah for its second straight victory. Six different backs scored touchdowns while rolling up 242 yards rushing. The defense, meanwhile, held Wenonah in check by holding them to 50 yards on the ground. All who dressed out played in the game while the starters remained in just over a quarter. When the mighty Panthers left the field that night, the Dragons’ fire had been squelched. Chiflin' Kids Stop Lee The Big Red faced its greatest challenge to date in Lee and conquered our cross-town rivals with pure guts. Huntsville roared from behind with two fourth quarter touchdowns to walk away as the victors. Using Jeff Smith's brilliant leadership and Duffy Boles slashing runs as incentive, the Panthers turned Lee's 12-7 third quarter lead into a 21-20 Huntsville victory. John Portella and Phil Price led a proud Panther defense. Huntsville showed tonight what it takes to beat a good ball club — and that's pride. With a crisp blocking line and a hard-charging backfield, the Big Red proved one thing; Coach O's chitlin' kids were the special of the night. 49 Panthers Edge Athene The Big Red ran into a determined Athens ball club but continued their winning ways by chalking up their fourth straight win. Huntsville took the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards in 11 plays with Clements scoring from the one. Smith hit Phil Price for 18 yards and a first down with third and 14 from the Athens 48 yard line for the big play of the drive. The rest of the game was mostly a defensive battle with a few Panther drives halted by penalties or fumbles. Boles led all ball carriers with 91 yards in 17 carries, and Smith completed 8 of 9 passes for 95 yards. HHQ Grinds Coffee The Big Red had an easy time disposing of the Coffee Yellowjackets by the score of 28-6. The defense allowed only 64 total net yards while the offense rolled up 294 yards. Randy Gray scored twice on a 23 yard pass from Smith in the first quarter and on a 5 yard burst in the second. In the third quarter Smith hit Price with a 9 yard touchdown pass, and Huey Hamilton closed Huntsville's scoring by bulling over from the four in the last quarter. Defensive tackle John Portella was a monster to the Yellowjacket offense by twice dumping their quarterback for big losses in the first quarter. The win brought Huntsville's record to 5-0. 50 Panthers Avenge Bearcats The Big Red got this yeor's Homecoming off to a fine start by thrashing Cullman 20-0. The Panthers got moving early in the first quarter and proceeded to march 54 yards for a score with bullish Dave Van Fossen ramming over from the four. Later in the second quarter Huntsville began moving from their own 49. After slick Boles moved the team 1 6 yards, cunning Smith launched a perfect 23 yard touchdown strike into Chuck Cooper's waiting arms. In the second half, shifty Gary Clements broke loose for a 32 yard jaunt to set up the Panther's final score by Boles on a 2 yard drive. It's always good to win a big one in front of old alumni and it sure does make the Homecoming Dance a huge success. Huntsville Derails Butler 's Train Before an overflow crowd of 1 2,000 screaming fans Huntsville and Butler squared off for what was to be the game of the year. After a scoreless first quarter, the Big Red s Phil Price intercepted a Butler pass. On the second play. Smith spiraled a perfect strike to Boles who outraced the Rebel defenders to pay dirt and a 6-0 lead. Butler made a comeback and forged ahead 7-6 at halftime. On the last play of the third quarter, Butler's Bo Matthews was struck by lightning in the form of blockbusting Bob Davis. As the ball squirted high into the air, Phil Price gathered it in and raced to the Butler 10 yard stripe. On third down, snakey Jeff Smith scrambled to the two yard line. Faced with fourth down, Jeff calmly called time out. After conferring with Coach Owen, Jeff returned with what was the Play of the Year. With great poise, he ducked into the end zone with the game winning score. Phil Price played a phenomenal game by blocking a punt, returning a fumble to set up the game winning score and catching a two-point conversion. The team showed tremendous class and pride and, as Coach Owen told the school, the reason we won is, We re Huntsville and they're Butler ' 51 Huntsville Overpowers Gadsden The Big Red kept rolling over opponents with a convincing 20-0 thrashing of the Tigers. After an uneventful first half with no scoring, the team came out fired up and proceeded to teach their opponents what the game was all about. The offense led by Dave Van Fossen, Smith, Boles, and Gray, racked up 314 total yards while the defense headed by Price, Lafans, and the gnomme Riehl, quickly muffled those tiger roars to soft purrs. Boles scored twice and Van Fossen once in that long second half. After an off-week the Panthers would wind up their season with Sparkman. Panthers Finish Undefeated Huntsville came into this game with a perfect string of victories and ended the season with the school’s first undefeated season in 23 years. Their victims were the Sparkman Senators. Sparkman gave the Big Red all they wanted but in the end it was a case of too. much Panther power. Boles and Smith scored in the first half on short runs while Chuck Cooper and Louis Fleming caught long passes for backbreaking touchdowns in the second half. The defense was led by Davis, Reihl, Portella, and Lafans.
