THE 1947 PIERIAN OF HUNTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION FOR A PEACEFUL ATOMIC ERA PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1947 ★ ★★★★★★ When the smoke cleared from the first atomic bomb, it was made plain by the debris and chaos that men must live at peace in one world or not at all. We, the students of Huntsville High School, have tried to attain an education that will prepare us for such a peace. It is our hope that this annual may be a record of our high school life to which we may turn back with pleasant retrospection. CONTENTS... I. Administration II. Faculty III. Classes IV. Poge 22 ClaM- Obay AnmueMa ia MgM May 30, 1967 This is Mel Simms, your special events correspondent for the Commencement Times. This program is coming to you from the municipal auditorium in Nicatine, Mars. The weather here is fine. The sky is blue and the sun is beating down stead ly. The auditorium is filling with familiar faces. The stage is arranged for anniversary addresses and special attractions featuring members of the H. H. S. Class of 47. Our main speaker for the day is Jesse Wilson, owner of the largest furniture corporation in the United States. Although a bachelor he still competes with Bert Rowan for the affections of Myra Simms. Our other speaker is W. C. Smith, a big business manager in Blue Ridge, N. C. The program is to be concluded by Ann Holloway and David Annerton. Ann will sing her favorite song, A Good Man Is Hard to Find and David will unveil his new portrait of Ann Hines intitled No Look, No See. The crowd is very noisy. Everyone seems to be enjoying the latest gossip. From a distance I see Leonard Bragg, Vernon Cramer, Wayne Nichols, Zelma Wilson, Carl Cramer, and Charles Snyder comparing their business advancements in the use of atomic energy as a source of power for their manufacturing concerns. My attention has just been called to the main entrance where Bobby Wilkinson, a test pilot for tthe Donald Hughes Aircraft Co. of Decatur, and his wife the former Helen Schrimsher, have just arrived in their rocket especially built for honeymooners. In looking over the program, I see listed among the entertainers Anne Baxter, Josephine Sansone, and Betty Anderson, all prominent musicians in the New York Symphony Orchestra, who are going to play their Symphonic arrangement of Open the Door Richard. Also on the program I see that Jo Holcomb and Mary Frances McGaha are featured in their version of The Dance of the Sticks. I wish to take this time to thank Harrison Gill and Ray Luttrell for their fine work in making this broadcast possible by television throughout the world. My attention has been called to a group of beautiful ladies sitting in the corner. Let's see if my mike can reach them. Yes, here are Helen Brock, Betty Hensley, June Pitts Johnson, Euel Smith, and Clara Walker. These housewives tell me that they are enjoying their work since many atomic devices have been invented. Standing close by I see Agnes Tolbert and Juanita Roden, talking about enlarging the second floor of Dunnavant's. The crowd is getting larger and noiser. Flash! Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Warden have just arrived in their special atomic rocket built in the shape of a football. P. S. Gossipers, Gordon has just succeeded Charles Hooper and Doug Lynch in the coaching at Huntsville High. Everybody near the rear of the auditorium seems to be excited about having their pictures taken by John Hall and Buddy Cox. Trying to be first are Betty Caneer, who lives at Riverton, and Sue Ray, who is co-owner of the Five Points Service Station. Waiting to be snapped are Jeanette Smith, Margaret Smith, and Jean Smith, who teach in business college in the Smith Building in Philadelphia. With them are their assistants, Eugenia Baker, Mary Eula Bell, and Evelyn Hipps. All by herself in the corner is Mary Towry still waiting for Corky to get out of the Marines. Speaking of the Marines, Creston Porter seems to be taking the show. He is still running around the auditorium saying hello in a style originated in 1947— hew-wo-wo-wo. With him are Clint Anderson and Joe Monroe now engineering professors at the University of Georgia. The last time I passed the entrance, I noticed Chester Pearsall handing out miniature orchids. Talking nearby I saw Henry Sudduth, Vice-President of Woolsworths, and Claude Walker, new owner of J. C. Penny's. To my left is a large window which allows a beautiful view of the airport. On the runway, I see Erskine Cantrell, an expert mechanic, repairing his rocket ship which crash landed. Waiting patiently Page 23 for him is Mrs. Cantrell, the former Doris Bailey, and James George, president in charge of his large bank in West Huntsville. The crowd is beginning to settle down now as it is almost time for the program to begin. Some of the ladies sitting in a row to themselves are Carrie Will McLean, Pauline Sudduth, and Betty Joyce Screws, who are missionaries in China; Ann Housman who is still working for Bell Telephone in Huntsville, and Jeanne Sandlin, Nancy Sanford, and Frances Sparkman, who are working in the jewelry department of M. G. M. in Hollywood. With them is Ramona Gupton, the head nurse at the Catherine Jacks' Public Hospital. The room is in an uproar now as everyone is laughing at Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cummings. Margaret has Charles by the ear pulling him away from Sally Ann Palmerlee Grote, America's outstanding journalist. Laughing and flirting as they come in the door are the late-arrivals Florine Barron, Bernell Beilis, and Mildred Bennett, who are research agents in the secretarial field and Frances Gates, Barbara Douglas, and Laura Louise Brackeen, noted interior decorators. Also among the late-comers are Jack Roberts and Jimmie Forbes, who are still arguing over the farm at Jeff, Alabama. With them are Tom Guthrie and B. A. Stockton, partners in the automobile industry in Michigan. Everyone is rising now as the Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Frank Ford, and his Justices, Richard Carter and Norman Pizitz, enter. Flash! Bruce Ross tells me that Harry Coons has just won a divorce suit for Mary Louise Shela-mer. Karl Woltersdorf was the defendant. Every profession is well represented today. I see Sammy Cttrano, Arvil Hymer, and Jimmy Reeder, three of Alabama's leading dentists. Jimmy has his very modernistic office in New Hope. Among the secretaries are Edna Bryant, Betty Jo Harris, Ramona Hulsey, Juanita O’Rear, and Charlotte Riggs, who work in the office of Jere Murphy, an agricultural expert. Well, radio listeners, I have seen everything now! As usual, Archie Todd is willing to play a game of cards. In one of the darker corners I see Oliver Ward, Louis Foster, Robert Green, and Robert Milner all occupied by the genius Archie and his card tricks. And guess who's looking on? None other than Mary Lou Horne, Virginia Hosch and Geraldine Holder. Loud whistles and sighs have called my attention to three of America's leading play boys, Bob Archibald, A. C. Daniel, and James Holliman, who have just arrived. Trying to get their attention are art designers Sarah Snyder, Kathryn Wood, Carolyn Pedigo, and Jeanne Walker. The auditorium is now quiet and everyone is seated except Buddy Black and Howard Gore, who have just arrived. I would like for you to hear the speeches but I see my time is up—so I'll return you to the present. Take it away! —MELVIN SIMMS, Class Prophet. ★ ★★★★★★★ Poge 24 The Juniors studied physics so that they could better understand the wonders of atomic energy. Rolling over nine opponents, the Crimsons not only became undisputed champions of North Alabama but also laid claim to the Alabama state championship. Boasting one of the fastest backfields in the state behind a hard charging line, the Panthers scored 250 points to 37 for their opponents. Although the team v as one of the smallest in the school's history and was outweighed in nearly every game, it was in fine physical condition and had the ability and spirit necessary to make this fine record. Above are Co-Captains Jesse Wilson and Gordon Warden For the first time in several years the team was fortunate to have a scout, Doug Lynch, to look over future opponents. Coach Frank and Assistant Coach Warden turned out a fine team and should be congratulated along with the players. One of the highlights of the 1946 season was the defeat of a highly touted Sheffield team that had been undefeated in twenty-five games. After a scoreless first half the Panthers roared back to win by two touchdowns. The climax of the season came with the defeat of a strong Decatur team, the Panther's traditional rival. Although trailing 6-0 at the half, the Crimsons came back to win and thereby avenged a last year's defeat. The closest game of the year was with a rugged Blount County eleven. Although outweighed about fifteen pounds per man the team went out determined to win and when the final whistle sounded the Crimsons had won by one point. The final game of the season was played in Athens on Thanksgiving Day. Boasting a line averaging close to 200 pounds, the Eagles were the heaviest team the Panthers had faced. The deciding factor proved to be the physical condition of the tvo teams, as the Crimsons scored twenty points in the last quarter to round out the season undefeated and untied. Above in the line are: Doug Weatherly, R.E.; Frank Ford, R.T.; John Hall, R.G.; W. C. Smith, C.; Jesse Wilson, L.G.; Jack Peake, L.T.; Raymond Taylor, L.E. Backs are: Erskine Cantrell, R.H.: Jimmy Reeder, F.B.: Gordon Warden, L.H. and Q.B.; Ernest Brooks, L.H. and Q.B. ROSTER GORDON WARDEN, Co-Captain, 5' 8 , 145 pounds. Brick'' lettered tor the fourth time, alternating at the tailback and blocking back positions. His triple threat ability earned for him a first team berth on the All-Tennessee Valley team. Gordon, the teams most dependable punter, had the ability to break away f 3r long gains, thus making him a constant threat to opponents. JESSE WILSON, Co-Captain, 5 9 , 140 pounds. Proc went out for football as a freshman and lettered at guard for the third time as a senior this year. He was noted for his fierce blocking and tackling. Because of this he received a second team berth on the All-Tennessee Valley selection. Jesse's spirit and pep helped keep the morale of the team high. ERSKINE CANTRELL, 5' 8 , 145 pounds. Curly lettered three years before he entered the army in 1944. This year he came back to become one of the five veterans on the team. Erskine, the wingback, called the plays and was probably one of the best field generals ever to play at Huntsville. Curly hit his stride in the Decatur game by scoring the winning touchdown. W. C. SMITH, 5' 8 , 135 pounds. Dub earned his third letter at the pivot post as a senior. Although he was one of the smallest men on the team Dub was a fine blocker and tackier. He has proved to be a valuable man at the center position and has started there for the last two years. Dub's linebacking ability was essential to the team. ERNEST BROOKS, 5' II , 170 pounds. In 1943 Ernest starred for Huntsville before he joined the Navy. He came back this year, alternating at quarterback and tailback, to play a big part in the team’s successful season. Ernie's speed and driving power made him a hard man to stop. He made first team All-State, first team All-Tennessee Valley, and received mention on the All-Southern selection. JOHN HALL, 5' 9 , 140 pounds. Johnny lettered in '43 and '44 as a valuable reserve guard and came out of the Marines in time this year to play regular at right guard. Johnny was perhaps in the best physical condition of anyone on the team and this condition paid off as he was not hurt all year. He was a fine team player and deserves much credit. FRANK FORD, 6' I , 200 pounds. Cato” was the big man on an otherwise small team. He played on the first team in 1943 and came back from the Marines to man the right tackle post for the Crimson. His blocking and tackling were terrific. Cato received the most votes for the All-Tennessee Valley team and made first team on the ALL-ALABAMA Magazine's All-State. JIMMY REEDER, 5’ 8 , 148 pounds. Tom lettered as a Sophomore and played his last season as regular fullback this year. Tom's outstanding ability in blocking and tackling and his excellent ball handling were big factors in the success of the team. Although small he was a dangerous runner and a fine linebacker. ROSTER DOUGLAS WEATHERLY, 6' 3 , 155 pounds. Snag lettered for the first time this year as a senior and played right end on the first team. At the start of the year this was noted as a weak position but Doug came through and filled it well. His great height and glue ' fingers made him an able pass receiver, catching passes that defenders could not reach. JACK PEAKE, 6 I , 165 pounds. Jack lettered last year for the first time as a sophomore and was one of the mainstays in the line this year. Jack, a vicious tackier and deadly blocker, played one of his best games against Sheffield. Since Jack is a junior and co-captain-elect, great things are expected of him next year. EUGENE TURNER, 5 10 , 150 pounds. Gene lettered last year for the first time as a junior and also this year as a senior. Although chiefly playing quarterback, he also played end and knew every back position. He was a good blocker, a fine pass defender, and was sometimes used to kick off. When called upon, Gene always came through. RAYMOND TAYLOR, 6 , 155 pounds. Scrappy lettered last year for the first time as a sophomore end. Raymond, a good blocker and fine defensive player, demonstrated his oass-snagging ability by catching three passes which resulted in touchdowns. Scrappy's ability was recognized when he made second team on All-Tennessee Valley and was selected as co-captain of next year's team. JIMMY DYER, 5' 9 , 145 pounds. Jimmy went out for football as a guard last year and lettered this year for the first time as a junior. In the early part of the season when a regular guard was hurt, Jimmy proved to be an able replacement. He was especially good at downfield blocking and breaking through the line to make tackles. CRESTON PORTER, 6' 2 , 175 pounds. Scootie lettered in '43 and '44, then entered the Marines. He received his discharge this year and got back after five games had been played. He quickly rounded into shape, however, and served as a valuable replacement at end. Scootie was a terror on the defense and a good blocker and pass receiver as well. J. E. MICHAEL, 5' 10 , 150 pounds. Mike lettered this year for the first time alternating at the pivot post and since he is a junior he will be back to take over this position next year. Mike was especially good on defense as a linebreaker as well as a pass defender. He will be counted on very much by next year’s team. FREDY KAUFMAN, 5 8 , 185 pounds. Fredy lettered last year for the first time as a junior. He was often inserted at tight spots to stem the opponents drives as he was noted for his good defensive play. Fredy liked to play on the center where he always gave the opponents plenty of trouble. RESERVES Above in the line are: Tommy Dilworth, R.E.: Joe Hill, R.T.; Fredy Kaufman, R.G.: J. E. Michael, C.; Jimmy Dyer, L.G.; Jodie Gibbs, L.T.; Creston Porter, L.E.. Backs are: Melvin Simms, R.H.; Karl Woltersdorf, Q.B.; Charles Warden, L.H.; Eugene Turner, F.B. MANAGERS Jack Mitchell, Bill Sanders, Archie Todd, head manager; Bobby Turner, Robert Jones. Much of the success of the season was due to the work of the reserves who came out each day and took plenty of punishment without glory. Whenever a regular was injured, an able reserve was always there to take his place. As most of the regulars of this year's team are graduating these boys will be counted upon to form a nucleus for next year's team. 1946 TENNIS TEAM Although pictures are unavailable recognition is due the tennis team of 1946. The schedule was a very successful one as the team won four matches and lost only to Phillips High whom they had defeated previously. Bobby Simms proceeded to the semi-finals in the state tournament and was defeated by the state champion. L. A. Bledsoe reached the quarter-finals and Joe Simms and El-win Williams got to the semi-finals in the doubles tournament. The cheering squad was always on the spot to lead yells and keep the morale high. Shown above are: Evelyn Kilpatrick, Ann Holloway, Jere Murphy, Myra Simms, head cheerleader; Wayne Nichols. Nancy Orgain, and Marianne Todd. GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATION READY! SERVE! After a slow start the team began to pick up, and by the end of the season the team had been welded into a smooth working unit. Although the team's record of seven wins and thirteen losses is not impressive, progress was evidenced toward the end of the season by the defeat of New Market and several other strong teams. Another great hindrance to the team was the lack of height and, as the season progressed, it was sorely missed. Even though two boys on the team were over six feet, there were smaller boys on the team to bring the average down to about five feet nine inches. The B team enjoyed a more successful season, winning nine games and losing thirteen. The height of the season came for the Bees'' when they reached the finals of the County Tournament. Much of the team's progress was due to the fine coaching ability and hard work of Coach Bob Warden, who took over the coaching reins this year. The coach, along with the boys, should be congratulated on producing such a fine team. Shown above in the top row are: W. C. Smith, captain; Jimmy Reeder, co-captain; Creston Porter, Jimmy Dyer, Jimmy Bragg. Bottom row: Claude Moore, William Sexton, Doug Weatherly, Melvin Simms, and Coach Bob Warden.
