MEMORIES OF '42 Early in September we began our last year in H. H. S., with the largest Senior Class in several years, over a hundred. The Crimson Panthers defeated Joe Bradley and started the football season off with a bang. For the second consecutive year we celebrated Homecoming, with the classes of '20, '25 and '30, as the honored guests. Bess Pratt, queen, and her maids, Lacy Wikle and Laura Halsey led the parade, which consisted of a number of gaily decorated floats. The Home Economics Club took the prize for the most beautiful float and the Hi-Y boys did themselves proud by winning the prize for the most comical float. Queen and maids were presented at the game and the festivities ended with H. H. S. chalking up a score of 49-0 against Albertville. A power shortage made it necessary for the last three games of the season to be played in the afternoon, however this merely served as a stimulus for the enthusiasm shown toward them and our boys wound up the season on Thanksgiving Day with the splendid record of eight games won and only one lost. With only a month to go until Christmas vacation we tried to settle down to work. However the arrival of the Senior rings got us all excited and we couldn't do much of anything but show them to everyone in sight. Then came Christmas vacation-wonderful Christmas vacation with parties, dances, weddings, and loads of fun for all. On January 6, completely exhausted, we stumbled back to school to get a little rest before mid-term and tests. Our president, Albert Huffman, and vice-president, J. W. Daye, graduated at mid-term and we elected new officers. With the country at war several members of the class left school to enlist in the armed forces of the nation. We miss them and we salute: Billy Buntley and James Williams. We were shocked one Sunday morning to read that Doris Howard, a Senior had become Mrs. Elton Culpepper and was leaving to make her home in California. It was not long before another Senior, Edith Woodward, took the final step too. We've missed both of these girls but we're happy for them. The basketball season was then well under way and the team played and won a number of games amid the cheers and screams of the students. At the District Tournament held in Cullman, they went to the semi-finals and made an excellent showing. For the first time this year we had a girl's physical education class. Mrs. McCauley was the instructor and the students were permitted to watch some basketball games between the two classes. These games were well attended and everyone enjoyed them. Page 46 V4 ' Home Economics Club float Hew about a ride? Jones can take it! Beauties Working hard, Laura? Freshman Float Homecoming queen and maids Just practicing Rowan triumphs again. Nice going, Frank. That's the way, boys. Pile on! Arthur goes high! Get him, Ried. Up at center! Come on now, locomotive. UNDER FIRE Page 48 MEMORIES (Continued- The inter-class basketball tournament was held at the end of the varsity season. The Seniors went to the semi-finals where they were defeated by Robinson's Raiders. The Raiders emerged victorious when they played the Daye Dreamers and were acclaimed the champions of H. H. S. This year has also brought changes in the faculty—At mid-term Mr. Gormely was called into the army and we had to wish him a fond forewell for a while. In the middle of basketball season Coach Frank left school and his leaving was mourned by one and all. However, Hi-Y sponsor, Mr. Milford coached the team and was quite successful. As soon as the season was over he left us, too, and he has been missed by everyone. Then came the Dramatics Club's splendid three-act play in which a number of our class played. This was a tremendous success and the students enjoyed it as they did the one-act plays, that have been presented in chapel during the year. The H Club, under the direction of Carey Hughes, sponsored the sale of Defense Stamps in school. Within three months the students and faculty had purchased over $6,000 worth of stamps and bonds. We're proud of this and we're still buying to Keep 'Em Flying. All through this year with its joys and its sorrows we have had Miss Bell, Senior sponsor, to turn to. Her never failing cheerfulness and sympathy have helped to make this year a happy one. At last this year we are to have the Auburn Knights for the Junior-Senior dance. It's about time but I wonder if it makes up for being denied a banquet after we worked so hard last year. At last the time to select caps and gowns came and we really began to feel like dignified Seniors even if we were still looking for those mythical privileges. We chose white for the girls and black for the boys and we hope they'll look as good to others as they do to us—after working for twelve years in this army for an education. As the lights of graduation become more distinct our hearts are both happy and sad. The time is at hand to say goodbye to our Alma Mater but the memories of the happy times we've had will be treasured in our hearts always. Our high school days are over but our life's work is just beginning. Huntsville High opened the season with a fine team that looked as if it were headed for an undefeated season. This starting team was never beaten but by the latter part of the year three of the starting seven linemen were out because of ineligibility and injuries and the backfield was hampered constantly by the injury jinx. Those who started the season but were out at the end were: J. W. Daye and Albert Huffman who were declared ineligible and Lloyd Hoots who was out with a shoulder injury. The boys who took over the vacated positions were Douglas Lynch, Joe Simmons, and Mike Emery. In the lower picture Bryson Simms who was the chief backfield replacement takes Hot Holder's place. These boys all did good jobs in filling the gaps and deserve much of the credit for Huntsville's fine season record of eight victories and a single loss. Either of these teams would have dene credit to any high school and we are proud of every boy on the team, they gave their best and it was plenty good. Below is the team that finished the year for the Panthers. In the line, Lee, R. G.; Gunn. R. T.,-Emery, R. G.; Lynch, C.; Hopper. L. G.; Williams, L. T.; Simmors, L. E. In the backfield, Simms, Q.
