K ujctQM . H ua ' Spirit, spirit let ' s hear It . . . We heard this every Fri- day at lunch during the weekly pep rallies. What a way to boost the Spartan spirit! Cheerleaders, flag girls, leader ship members and the band gave their all out effort to prepare the student body for the following football game that evening. We, the students, took part in the yelling and cheering along with the cheerleaders. This ac tivity was definity the highlight of our daily lunches. But sometimes cheering and yelling just didn ' t push us quite enough. That ' s when the gymnastic team came in. This year they participated in a few of the pep rallies and performed stunts to get the crowd going. Another push was when the cheerleaders passed out oranges and Orange Crush sodas to the loudest students. That really got us going. It was worth getting something in return for our spirit and enthusiasm. Pep rallies not only brought us together for a spiritual activity, we viewed each other and all our moves and ex- pressions were being watched by the people sitting across from us. The clowns and hams sat up in the front, and the observers stood up on the benches to get a good glimpse of everything that was going on. For some reason, we forgot about all our responsibilities and classes and zeroed in on the spirit and support for our football teams. The Friday follies of involvement and ex- citement were the one thing that helped save our school spirit. 1 . Brian Waters and Maria Gil stare amazingly, as the cheerleaders perfornn. 2. Students enjoy participation of the gynnnastic team, perfor ming stunts. 3. I don ' t know v hat I ' m doing, but it ' s fun! expresses Geanette McCray as she claps along during Pep Rally. 28

Music seemed to be the most common topic of conver- sation around school. With the invasion of videos and new wave styles swarming the interest of most students, we were blasted by the video explosion. Was it MV3 or MTV that everyone was talking about? Both! The hottest TV and cable TV programs of music videos and concert line ups. HP ' s traditional rock fans and concert goers got a look at the new music entertainment and fashions sweeping the school with a new wave. But new wave wasn ' t all of it, this new music, so called RockaBilly, grasped quite a few of us. HP had its share of pompadors, Stray Cats t-shirts, and the tapered in Levi ' s and denim jacket look. Rock-a-Billy even dominated the dances with a change of step. The disco scene was long gone while the Stray Cat strut took over. We were also influenced by the top rated radio station, KROQ, that year. Students listened to the newest bands of Duran Duran and Adam Ant, while KROQ DJ, Richard Blade hosted the latest music program MV3. We found ourselves talking a lot of both the radio station and new TV program. Music video was only one of the biggest forms of enter- tainment that year. Video home games kept everyone home. Atari cartridges were the hottest things to do at home. No longer did we have to make a trip to an Arcade to play a video game. Some of the hot concerts of the year were Rush ' s Signals Tour, Billy Squier, and Multi-Spectacular US Festival. T-shirts were always an endless fad around cam- pus. Music was the dominating influence on the styles around school, and it seemed to always be that way each year. 1. No, the negative wasn ' t turned around in this print. It ' s the KROQ radio sta- tion ' s catchy logo. 2. Low heels were perfect for school. 3. Marcela Magna on her way to 4th period wearing one of her fashionable outfits. 30
