Homecom- ing glittered with all itsfancy frills, floats and court, all organized by Leadership members, Connie Morales and Nery Alfonso. Gracing the Homecoming Court were Queen San- dra Aguilara, and Princesses, Lillian Barrios, Alba Suarez, Sandy Kahl and Joy Maxwell. The escourts were Jesse Valladares, Tony Guillen, Julio De Leon, Luis Noy and Herschel Kozasky. Apart from the court ceremony, patience, time and creativity were essential in putting together a Homecoming for the thousands of spectators. As for the HP students themselves, preparation, spirit and support were mandatory to them in Homecoming. Friday afternoon, previous to the game, Leadership organized a noontime activity among the Homecom- ing Princesses. It was somewhat of an obstacle course where football players painted their faces at the end of the race. Something different had been done to boost the students spirit for the following evening. Along with this activity, a pep-rally took place. It lasted the whole lunch period . Apart from the band, cheerleaders, flag team, and the students as well, par- ticipated loudly in the festivities. Preparations for the game began at about 1:00 p.m. Leadership, with the help of other students, worked together in putting up banners, balloons, decorating floats and setting up the traditional Court. Somehow four hours of preparations didn ' t phase the hard work- ing students. Once the evening drew close, everything fell together. The floats looked great. ja u l m ' ) H I K |[ H iHHI 1 . Other organizations such as YGAD and the Spartan Club, put some creativity into their floats as well. Then came the dance on the following Saturday night. A time for everyone to get out their nicest out- fits and ' glamour up ' for an evening with DJ Joe Green from radio station KGTE 102. This was the se- cond year in a row that the dance was held in the boys gym. Quite a few people showed up, both students and guests. At 12:00 a.m. the festivities came to a closing, All those along hours of hard work didn ' t compare to how fast the game and dance went. In any case. Homecoming was a success again. It wouldn ' t be till next year that the Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen would get together repeat a ceremony that became the best known tradition of the school year. 4.|!iW° Ste« 0 ' ' ' 7. The energetic tail back for the Junior team surprised us all by making the only figure show up on the score board. Senior quarterback, Martha Cortez, and tailback, Ana Chavarria, felt a bit more competition in the game as opposed the year before. The Royal Powder Puff court and the wild bunch of cheerleaders made the activity a big success along with an excellent game played by the Junior and Senior girls. H ua ' Spirit, spirit let ' s hear It . . . We heard this every Fri- day at lunch during the weekly pep rallies. What a way to boost the Spartan spirit! Cheerleaders, flag girls, leader ship members and the band gave their all out effort to prepare the student body for the following football game that evening. We, the students, took part in the yelling and cheering along with the cheerleaders. This ac tivity was definity the highlight of our daily lunches. But sometimes cheering and yelling just didn ' t push us quite enough. That ' s when the gymnastic team came in. This year they participated in a few of the pep rallies and performed stunts to get the crowd going. Another push was when the cheerleaders passed out oranges and Orange Crush sodas to the loudest students. That really got us going. It was worth getting something in return for our spirit and enthusiasm. Pep rallies not only brought us together for a spiritual activity, we viewed each other and all our moves and ex- pressions were being watched by the people sitting across from us. The clowns and hams sat up in the front, and the observers stood up on the benches to get a good glimpse of everything that was going on. For some reason, we forgot about all our responsibilities and classes and zeroed in on the spirit and support for our football teams. The Friday follies of involvement and ex- citement were the one thing that helped save our school spirit. 1 . Brian Waters and Maria Gil stare amazingly, as the cheerleaders perfornn. 2. With the invasion of videos and new wave styles swarming the interest of most students, we were blasted by the video explosion. Was it MV3 or MTV that everyone was talking about? Both! The hottest TV and cable TV programs of music videos and concert line ups. HP ' s traditional rock fans and concert goers got a look at the new music entertainment and fashions sweeping the school with a new wave. But new wave wasn ' t all of it, this new music, so called RockaBilly, grasped quite a few of us. HP had its share of pompadors, Stray Cats t-shirts, and the tapered in Levi ' s and denim jacket look. Rock-a-Billy even dominated the dances with a change of step. The disco scene was long gone while the Stray Cat strut took over. We were also influenced by the top rated radio station, KROQ, that year. Students listened to the newest bands of Duran Duran and Adam Ant, while KROQ DJ, Richard Blade hosted the latest music program MV3. We found ourselves talking a lot of both the radio station and new TV program. Music video was only one of the biggest forms of enter- tainment that year. Video home games kept everyone home. Atari cartridges were the hottest things to do at home. No longer did we have to make a trip to an Arcade to play a video game. Some of the hot concerts of the year were Rush ' s Signals Tour, Billy Squier, and Multi-Spectacular US Festival. T-shirts were always an endless fad around cam- pus. Music was the dominating influence on the styles around school, and it seemed to always be that way each year. 1. No, the negative wasn ' t turned around in this print. K IB 34 Our 1982 Varsity Football team showed great en- thusiasm this year. Four our first game of the season on our own Reeder Field playing for the perpetual trophy, our Varsity Football team defeated one of our archrivals Bell High School 2214. Having not defeated the Eagles for ten years, this was the start of a very exciting season, and the best was yet to come. H.P. was expected to have a fairly good year in 1982 with some key returning players such as Louie Guerrero, Dvid Russell, Marcos Forrester, Rick Barnes and Gus Fernandez forming a good nucleus. H.P. had experience at the skill positions but no returning starters on the offensive line. The top teams in the league as predicted by one coach would be Garfield, Franklin and H.P. From the opinions of coach Parkhill and the Varsity fans, this had been a very successful year for our team. We won three very big games against Bell, South Gate and Poly. What probably helped the most this year was the great fan support given by our H.P. Spartans. 1. Francisco Arellano with the help of his teammates tackle the Franklin Panthers. 2. We held thenn, then when we got the ball and drove 97yds. to score first. In the 4th quarter Poly put together a drive and gets into scoring position. It was 4th down and on the 15yd. line Poly tried for a field goal, (if they had made it, it would have looked doubtful that we would be able to catch I up) but Francisco Contreras got by untouched and blocked the at- tempt. Later on with only 4 minutes in the game we drove and scored, ] with no time on the clock. The score was now H.P. 13 — Poly — 14. On the extra point attempt, H.P. used a k icking formation. The ball was snapped to David Russell ( 12) who then pitched it back to Louie Guerrero ( 20) who then passed it to Marcos Forrester in the end zone for the two point conversion. The final score H.P. 15 — Poly — 14. This has been the first time since 1969 H.P. had won a playoff game. The second playoff game was against Garfield High School. Gar- field had won the first game against H.P. (33-6), and Garfield was most favored in this game. Garfield scored first, making the score 6-0 with about 8 minutes left in the game. Louie Guerrerro scored with a 40yd. pass reception, and making the score 7-6, H.P. ' s favor. Garfield then drove 95yds. with the key play being 4th down and 4 yrds. to go, they went for the T.D., and scored. The final score 14-7, Garfield ' s victory. 1 1 . The chemistry of the players was unbelievable. The most outstanding player was Pablo Red Amado. As captian and All League player, this senior performed 25 touchdOWn passes. His passes, however would be ineffective without his top receivers, Sophomore all League player, Patrick P.J. Johnson and All League junior Teddy Guzman who made 15 and 10 touchdowns respectively. The defense was the other artery that fed the heart of the team, with a solid wall im- penetrable to the opposition. The prime hit- ters were players Manuel Angeli, All League Defensive Player of the year, and 10th grader David Bernal, who chalked up 36 tackles. Excellent 12th graders were also Luis Heckmuller, A-1 linebacker and Jose Villasenor, the bomber who taxied in 15 touchdowns. With the changing of schedules from year to year, it was almost like we were moving up and down on a graphic scale. But no matter what happened to our schedules, we were still united as one student body. That is why we used the orange theme. We. the students, were individual pieces of the pulp combined in one orange. Since the dead line mania finally ended. ! stepped down from the gGlden cropper empire. Eight months of designing layouts, writing copy, waiting for pictures to arrive, and finalizing quad pacs seemed so endless. With the crazy staff I worked with, they kept me from going out of my mind. The days of whipping up quick layouts before Steve Eddy arrived, came to an end on March 25, 1983 The fact tfiat our staff was new and unexperienced made it more of a challenge in coming up with so many ideas for the book. Everyone learned so much through something we called a learning ex- perience. Being Editor gave me the opportunity to teach the staff all the techniques they will be us ing in the years to come I ' m very proud of our El Recuerdo. thanks to my talented advisor, Mr. G! With his artistic skills and great personality, we were able to put together a great book. You did an excellent job for your first year as advisor. I want to give all the luck to Eddie Rojas and Aymee Valdes next year. Thanks a lot for all your support, Eddie, and for hanging in there with the faculty section. Aymee, try not to drive Mr. G. too crazy and good luck on the Opening Section. Two last people Id like to thank are Gail Jacobs and Felicitas Garcia for all the time they spent typing copy. As for the rest of the staff, you guys were a lot of fun. Thanks for all your help and for teaching me all those songs on KROQ. I am most happy with the Opening Section. Mostly because of the excellent photography of the oranges. And, I hope those who read this book will appreciate the time and effort put into it. I definitely will! Joy Maxwell, Editor Wow!!! What an experience to be involved as an advisor in the production of this yearbook! The students have truly conquered the task of developing a June book on a 3 track year around system. Thanks! Mr. Geilenfeldt ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS RALPHS MARKET — Manager Rudy De Leon for donating oranges to promote our yearbook at pep rallies. Located at corner of Florence and Rita in Huntington Park David Leyva — for his excellent little Orange Spartans. Robert ' s Studio — Wayne, Hank and Larry for their photography work. KROQ radio station — for entertaining us under our deadline crisis. Yearbook students of Huntington Park High School designed the 1 983 E Recuerdo. On a budget of $20,000, 700 copies were printed at Taylor Publishing Company in El Paso, Texas, under the direction of Stephen Eddy. Copies were sold at $20.00 each. Typestyles us- ed were Korinna for copy and special graphics on headings by Mr. Geilenfeldt. Bound between a hot foiled silver stamped cover, were 240, 100 lb. enameled pages — 30 pages are 4 col- ors. Special colored heavy paper with a 1 color, still photograph, were used on the endsheets. Developing of color and Black White pictures were processed by Roberts Studio in Los Angeles. Photographs were taken by Wayne, Hank and Larry from Roberts Studio and El Recuerdo staff photographers. Senior portraits were taken by Roberts Studio. 240- tVLe.- Z£ w ZxI. T$ loie M ningus -l-o -e-t ' o c . |0O l Ka Via.L;€ dLne5t 00 0 «5lCX l- - COr C ' . ... .
