Winter Class of 1950 Senior B Officers, W'60. Skip Husbands, Melva Brown, Presidenf Frank Berry, Carmela Pinio, Larry Bryan. The Laconians of W'60 firsi' became loyal Spar+ans in February of I956, some four and a half years ago. Queen Diane Fren'rz and King Loring Ruff reigned ai' +heir class debu+, fhe semi-annual Howdy Dance. Spar+a's new freshmen were greefed by +he Iowa Tes'rs, and by a devasfafing fire 'rhai' ruined The Gym. Bu+ fhese minor problems did no'r sfop +he new- comers from parficipafing in every phase of high school acfivify. Fooiball was +he Laconians' sporf, and during +heir sophomore year 'rhey helped +0 bring home B and Varsi+y League Championships. Upperclassmen ai' las'r, 'l'he Laconians rolled inio ac+ion in fheir iunior year. Serving on Execuiive Board were Sharon Rupp, Bob Wimpey, Carmela Pinfo, Frank Berry, Darlene Keener, and Jim Herdman, while ofhers of 'Phe class were ac'l'ive as members and offi- cers of Spar+a's many clubs and organizaiions. ln 1'he sporfs world, +he Varsiiy 'Foo'l'ball Team - a- long wi'rh +welve members of fhe W'60 class - won fhe Easfern League +i+le for +he second year. The class decided on Laconians as iheir name, and powder blue as fheir color. Ginny Erwin, Bob Whim- pey, Darlene Keener, Jim Herdman and Craig Fer- fig served on Execu+ive Board, while Songleaders Diane Freniz, Melva Brown and Dorofhy Wade ioined Ginny in showing 'rheir spirii' a+ fhe games. The House of Represenfalives came info beir during +he Laconian BIZ semesier, and +he class proud of having had +he firsl Speaker of +he Hous Ben Bycel, as one of i+s members. The Class of W'60 had many fine leaders amol i+s members, including ihree Ephebians, fwelve Ce fornia Scholarship Federaiion Sealbearers, and i fewer fhan eighfeen Phoenix Socie+y members. Bob Whimpey did an excellenf iob as Sfude Body President wi+h Execu+ive Board assisfance irc Laconians Sharon Rupp, Ted Wer'l'z, Ben Bycel, l Bauserman, Diane Freniz, and Roberf Deucher. The Varsi'ry foo+ballers walked home wi+h 'fh +hird frophy, and +hen wen+ on lo become Cify Foi ball Champions, wifh +hir+een Laconians on fhe w ning 'ream. The baskeiball squad also came fhrou wifh +he +i+le of Easfern League Champions, for 1 firsf iime in 'rhirieen years. Some 20 LeHermen were among +he I I6 Laconl gradua+es, all of whom carry away fond memor which will lasi' for +he resi' of +heir lives: perhaps mi oufsfanding, +he nighf fhey sfepped 'forlh in b robes, received diplomas, and leff Spar+a wilh ' moH'o, The Pas?
