Mr. Robert L. Simpson, Principal FOREWORD WEN gold was discovered in Cali- fornia in 1849, the great westward movement came to a climax. Thousands of pioneers set out for the distant coast, knowing full well the hardships which they would encounter. As we pioneers of 1949 set out on life’s journey, we, too, are filled with the brave, eager spirit of fron- tiersmen. Throughout our progress, may this book be a constant reminder of the place where we built the firm founda- tions on which our minds, bodies and spirits will grow.
