Softball At Huntington 1952-'53 The second day of this school year, twenty-eight boys reported to Mr. Hurd for softball practice. The -Juniors and Seniors, for the most part, were separated from the Sophomores and Freshmen for instructional purposes. Mr. Orr assisted with the younger group, and the entire group responded rapidly. Huntington fielded another fine team on the diamond. ln- experience and lack of preparation time made it difficult to compete with other schools, some having played during the summer. In spite of this, the one lost record stood at 5001. This was the first year that Adelphi was not in the league. The teams were divided in groups of three throughout the county. We played Southerstern, the eventual county champs, twice and the Clarksburg twice in the league. Our team had batting potentiality, but we needed more time for maxium development. Several of the boys hit home runs during the season, and the average runs scored were eleven. One thing to be remembered concerning this season was that in eight games our infield was able to make seven double plays. As near as we are able to find out, this topped by far any tearn in the county. Neil Uhrig as a Freshman, did much of the pitching, and Ernie Dumrn took over the balance of it. Bob Uhrig caught. Mendenhall, Gary McKee, .Toe Parker and Bob McCarty played most of the outfield. Other boys, including Freshmen and Sophomores in the picture above, saw considerable action. This looks good for the future Huntington teams. This was the first year for the new backstop. The boys are anticipating the inauguration of hard ball along with track in the spring.
