Q 1 ' f qg,ff3 I E 4 s THE COMING OF ARTHUR To build a school better in every way, a pertect king- dom, is the goal ot many individuals working in di- verse ways, in various groups, by devious methods to achieve the ultimate-a pertect Camelot. We have all read and known ot King Arthur and his valiant knights since childhood. An artist painted these two lovely pictures ot the Coming of Arthur and the Pass- ing of Arthur at the request ot former senior classes, who in turn presented them to us as a perpetual in- spiration tor all on coming groups. ln its truest sense l-d-y-l-l-s have to do with traditions, the pleasing or picturesque in one's background. Certainly Huntington High has these. But we cannot help cogitating on the l-d-o-lrs ot our school, both those ot yesterday and today, who have been instru- mental in its building. Finally we must contess that in our court exists some ldles-or ldlers, who. it they seem to construct nothing tangible, at least lend color to the whole picture. Won't you turn the pages and observe what the group ot '52 and '53 has added to the dear old structure! THE 1953 HUNT I I I I I I . ROADS TO AGREEMENT Salutatorian Betty Ellis Heavy Traffic Hanorarian Roy Hogley Getting Ahead Betty said that in a recent Roper poll which aslced why send children to high school, the largest vote was to get them ready tor a job. Next came: to teach them to get along with people. The senior speakers used the general theme Roads to Agreementl' in their search for causes ot discord, and means of getting along better with people. Ray told us that there were three kinds of people on the road, those who get away in the sense of getting away with murder, or maybe getting away from a trattic cop: those who get along and are doing just what the exe pression implies-moving with the trattic: and the third group, getting ahead'i sometimes arrives at important destinations and sometimes lands in hospitals. Honorarian Rose Belle Cuttler Road Bloclcsn Salutatorian . ,, , Carolyn Baumgardnef No Honlming on the Highway Rose Belle learned that the ditticult people we encounter are usually victims ot tear. She believes that when we recog- nize and understand this road block, the danger ot collisions will be much less. Carolyn Found a man-Thornton Wilder, American author and teacher-who called ours The Silent Generation. He admits that the young people of today may laclc some ot the characteristics of our forefathers, who cleared a wilderness, but he thinlcs they may be developing traits to cope with new problems of the twentieth century. The con- clusion of the spealcers was that young people ot the present generation may be discovering new approaches to the road which they are traveling together. We started out by goth' ering the contents ot the Date Bait and printing it. We all spent many third periods, lots ot lunch hours, and our pre- cious time atter school scouring the town for advertisements At last chore number I was tinished. and we went on to higher things. After much thought and a good deal of dis- cussion, We chose the theme tor our book, and began to assign specitic tasks for everyone. Our Annual being well on 72 its way, we began selling it. To get the sales drive started, we entertained the Court ot l-t.l-1.5. with o splendid assembly. Mrs, T, Smith Brewer told us ot her experiences with past annuals, A humorous slcit followed, starring Sir Good Knight, Sir Wholly Knight, and Sir Weak Knight, Next, all the candidates tor Queen ot Love and Beauty were presented to the King by their escorts. A super sales tallc topped the whole thing att. Feeling that we deserved a change, we packed up and took off lor the S.I.P.A. Convention in Lexingion, Virginia. Lexing on is the home oi Washington and Lee University: and wh'le we learned a lot about Annual production, we alto had the iirio oi our lives! All good things must come to an end though, fo back to Huntington and work, work, work. Marge and Beverly teamed up with Mr. Hyldolt to inveigle more money out of l'luntington's business tirms in return lor advertisements in our wondrous book. Mr. De Young mounted stacks oi pictures, and Mrs. Hood kept books like mad. The rest ol us clid our jobs faithfully, even into the summer. At last the book was finished and distributed. The statt went its many ways, leaving our two iunior members behind to start all over again on next year's HUNTINGTONIAN. After the tirst tive games the experience began to show: our football team came to the tore lront, and we closed the season with rousing victories over our two age old rivals Charleston High School and East. By this time we began to think that perhaps we had one at the tinest teams in the state. 78 OF GLORY The tootball record ot l952 was 5 wins, tour losses, and one tie: three ot the tour losses going by a one touchdown mar- gin. The sophomores, iuniors. even taculty, rose in tribute as the members. clad in caps and gowns, took their old Familiar places. The nostalgic mood continued as Bob Musgrave. Citizenship awards were given to Alma Keyser, Rose Belle Cuttler, Jim St. Clair, and Danny Goulding. The mood changed when Sue Collins trans- ported all to a new planet twenty-tive years hence and revealed the whereabouts and remarkable achievements ot this outstanding group. We can dream, can't we? Tears flowed lreely as the class rose, sang the Alma Mater, and marched from the auditorium. Now that the end had come, no one wished to leave, but all gathered about the hall, the steps, the yard lor a lew last iam sessions.
