York, James Arthur York, Phillip Paul Zickan, Jane SENIOR RECOLLECTIONS The last three years have gone quickly: in fact, perhaps too quickly for us. We are the graduating class of l95O, and as we stand here looking back, many memories crowd our thoughts. We remember the big things such as school elections . . . Glee Club con- certs . . . HHS and East football games . . . Footlight Follies . . . band festivals . . . PROM . . . basketball tournaments . . . PTA Varieties . . . Senior Plays lespecially Our Townul . . . Victory Ball . . . track and baseball . . . and now finally Commencement! But there are also other things that creep into our minds, and often crowd out the seemingly more important events. They are the little everyday things we took for granted . . . cakes at Brown's . . . Coach Seibert's class . . pep assemblies . . . gay chatter between classes . . . crew cuts . . . the new look . . . spring . . . endless sixth periods . . . booth at Humphreys . . . 208 . . . gossiping at the locker. . . holidays . . . infra-muralsports . . .April Pool Tatlers . .. . . . seventh period . . . clubs . . . neck scarfs . . . cuffed blue jeans . . . two bells . . . Junior League lndian plays . . . term papers . . . front steps at noon on pretty days . . . Drivers Education . . . senior week . . . speech class . . . career day . . . and so it goes. These things mean high school to us. Will they be the happiest days of our lives? We can't say yet, but we can and will say thanks to the many wonderful memories, land perhaps a few not so wonderfull, the friends we'll never forget, and a heap of learnin' which is likely to come in mighty handy some day. But our time is up, and we must pass on. So, proudly, but with regret, we say farewell to Huntington High and thanks for everything. ! T JUNIOR OFFICERS Pres. . . . . . George Waldeclc V. For relaxation and lun, dances, movies and other entertainment were provided throughout the year. Also, we have helped in the educa- tional tield by having vocational guidance assemblies and vocational speakers. Our Student Council has given the students a chance to have a voice in school attairs. ELECTION Nothing draws the attention ot the school more than the election ot our student body president. The Huntington High School Student Government has promoted these elections so that by secret ballot every student can have a port in choosing his leader. The last elections held in December, IQ49, showed clearly the rising enthusiasm tor these elections. The two political parties, the United Progressive Student Organization and the Congressional Party, held their conventions in the school, and each nominoted its candi- dates from the iunior class. Then the primary election was held, leaving Russell Troutmon the Congressional candidate and tvtory Thornburg the UPSO candidate. These two students and their party members launched upon a campaign which would rival those ot big elections. ln the tinal election Mary Thornburg was chosen Vice-President to become the 'Sl President. The candidates cast their ballots. L s L Y' 2 efyfffflew FOOTBALL SEASON SUMMARY Only Dick Keifer, Tom Eieldson, and Phil York were back from the great i948 team to begin the new football season for the Pony Express. An early injury forced Keifer out for the entire season. leaving only two veterans on the squad. We opened the season in fine style by defeating the defending State B Champion Vinson eleven I3-IZ. It was a hard fought, well earned victory. On the next Friday the defending State A Champion Beckley fell before the Expressmen-. The season outlook began to look bright as the lronton game came up, but the Red and Blue then began to experience a plague of injuries which at one time placed seven regulars on the bench. Returning to state competition after losing to lronton and Ashland, the Express dropped a tough one to Williamson-. A fast improving Parkersburg team surprised us-to gain revenge for last year's humiliating defeat. In late October Huntington faced the difficult task of attempting to stop the high flying Weirton Red Riders, who eventually became the l949 champion. Our boys played their best game of the campaign in forcing Weirton to take to the air to defeat the outmanned Red and Blue 32-7. The long string of defeats was nearly broken on a muddy field at Logan, but the clock ran out with the Pony Express inches away from a winning touchdown. The curtain was brought down on one of the most disastrous seasons in history as both traditional games with Charleston and East were dropped for the first time since IQ46. Bright spots in the year were the fine play of Tom Eieldson, Phil York and Chuck Bell, and the promise shown by such youngsters as Jerry Wolford, Jim McNeil, Billy Richards and Sam Kaplan. We look for our boys to be out to avenge some of these defeats in l95O. During the summer months one may see elevcn lovely girls practicing routines in Ritter Park. These beauties are the talented Huntington High School maiorettes. All are under the capable direction ol Mrs. Mary Rowley Hesson. Lelt to right: D. Romsey, J. Harrah, G. Van Hoose, J. Roush, J. Jim Fulks is the very capable head manager, and his worthy assistants are John Griltith, Jim Puckett, Fred Rice, and Gary Gilbert. Believe me, these boys work hard lor their letters. But the new boys are giving them keen competition and betore long will be passing the timer and distance set by the boys last year. You say Mr. De Young has it? . . . l-lave the pictures come back from the engraver yet, Mrs. McMullin? . . .They haven't? Pst! Karen! Wasn't yesterday our deadline? . ..Annie, why don't you get Betty to help you identify that picture? . . . Why, Mrs. l-lood, are you sure my receipts don't check? . . . No, Dorothy, I can't imagine what happened to the Science Club write- up . . . Jack, isn't this a beautiful picture of Mary Lee as Miss l-luntingtonian7 . . . What did you say, Betty? Oh, ask Mr. l-lyldoft about the advertising . . . Dorothy! you can relax! Miss Greenawalt has the Science Club write-up! Confusing, isn't it? To think that we poor Innocents expected working on the Annual to be smooth sailing! That was last tall before we realized that such a task could make a nervous wreck out of a perfectly sane person. Our tasks began with compiling material to go into the Date-Bait books, the profit from which pays for the covers on the Annual. During the time that pictures are being taken, the school is in a turmoil, and so are we. Again, in the spring there is a mad rush to get pictures of later im- portant school events and ship them out before our deadline. Not until the last write- up is on its way to the printer can we really relax. We wonder if the tinished product will be proof to the teachers that we havent disturbed their routine so many times in vain! Now we bequeath all our hard work and good times to the future statf mem- bers. We've enjoyed every minute of it! We hope you like it! Weire iust eavesdropping at the rehcarsal lor the senior play, which was directed by Mrs. Compton. Written by Thornton Wilder, Our Town tells the story ot the substantial tolk in Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. No one who saw the play will ever torget the touching scenes at the wedding or the townspeople in the cemetery on the hill. How hard we tried to relive the past with them!
