There were very few major events in which the Huntington High School Band did not participate during the past school year. With the drum major and the majorettes step' ping high out in front, the band went through their colorful maneuvers during the fall season. As soon as the football season blew its last whistle, they be- gan to practice for the concert season and the fes- tival. The band gave previous concerts before the baro festival, including one on April 29th in the City Hall. The musicians, under the able direction of Mr. Shadwell, are planning to talce a trip to Canada this summer. The high school band was high y honored in having the two best trombonists in the State. Approximately twenty-two seniors in the band will graduate in June. J. Irwin, O. Kraihenbuehl, B. Kerr. G. Kenaston. G. Pendleton, B. Polndexter, D. Parrish, F. Ray, B. Stan- H. Lane, L. Mercln, M. At the end ot each year the Club gives a banquet honoring the new members who have won their letter during the past year. This banquet is where the oath and other ceremonies talce place when the new members are brought into the 'HW Club. Also each tootball season the Club elects a Miss Pony Express and two attendants who represent our school at the Charleston game and the East game. The members also sell programs at tootball games and usher during the basketball season. Captains ot our victorious gridiron squad ot 45 were Harold Young and Ray Simmons. Cn the hardwood Charles Mott and Jaclc Sheppe lead a tast breaking tive. Jack Sheppe, a tour year man. captained our baseball team to a well deserved birth in the Big Seven Conference. Such should never be the case, for their task of sparkling the enthusiasm of the student body for the home team is a vital one. Many hours of practice must be accomplished under the patient direction of Miss Williams before they dare step out to lead the cheers. The group this year has been unusually faithful and hard-working. They have been present and on the job at every single football game and basketball game played by our teams at home or away. E PCOTB The Pony Express opened their season with seven regulars back and the addition of Elroy Caur dill, Paintsville gift to the Express. They romped over the highly favored Highlanders to the tune of 26-O. The next week the Express traveled to Beckley to tangle with the Flying Eagles and handed to them a 24-O defeat. ln the first home game, we handed the boys from Logan a 3847 loss. This was the first time the Express had been scored on all year. A powerful lronton team clashed with the Express and handed the boys their first defeat of I2-I5. The Torncats paid a visit to the tome town and were sent home howling after being handed a defeat of 2l-6. The next week the Express went to visit the Wolfpack and although rain and mud were bad. the boys came home with a 26-6 victory. The Big No allotment for expenses incurred on such trips is made by the school: instead the cheer- leaders raised the money to finance the season themselves. The sponsored dances after the games and cleared enough to not only meet current ex- penses but also to purchase six new megaphones and two sweaters. Of the six faithfuls shown above only one senior, Ray l-lite, will be lost through graduation. The five regulars, supported by the two alternates, Kay Duckworth and Jerry Shank, will be ready to go into action next fall. ALL SEASON Reds were the guests of the Express the next week. The team was greatly under-powered because of the loss of Richard Jenkinson due to an injured back, but though handicapped greatly they held the Big Reds to a I9-20 win. The Dunbar Bulldogs were the guests of the Express the next week and were handed a 20-I9 defeat. The oldest rival of the Ex- press. the Wayne Wonders, were swamped by the score of 45-O. The Pony Express went to visit the Mountain Lions the next week and on a muddy field were handed the worst defeat of the year by the score of 7-12. The Express, a tired and injured team, tangled with the Highlanders in their last game and were defeated by a score of l3-8. The Express had a good season but due to injuries, lost games that with a full team would not have been lost.
