Torch Torch, the honor society ot Huntington High School, is a chapter ot the Nation- al Honor Society. its purpose is to promote ideals ot scholarship and leadership in Huntington High School. We are composed ot the upper titteen per cent ot the senior class. The sophomores are our guests at the induction ceremonies held each semester. Last September Don Rice and Bob Robertson presided over the assembly with Marine Sergeant Charley Warren giving the address. The new members passed the torch ot learning, donned their pins, and soon tools matters into their own hands, as the second semester arrived. Election results tound Pat Madison and Betty Fitz- gerald in charge ot the assembly. Mr. Yagel, our sponsor, was the spealcer. This new group ot scholars were soon in charge as the seniors led their graduation proces- sion, going out into the world to love light and to seelc knowledge. Student Government Student government is a detinite part ot high school lite. This has become a prominent tact at Huntington High School. During the tirst semester, under Don Stinson's and Eleanor Calley's leadership, plans were made to erect an Honor Roll, dedicated to tormer H.H.S. students now in the armed services. We were host to Ashland High School in an exchange ot assemblies which the tri-state high schools have giveh tor two years in order to establish good will among the schools. The student body elected Joe Damron tor the ottice ot president ot this representative group at the beginning ot the second semester. Both the president the vice president, George Henderson, strove tor better assemblies. For the second year, the student council di- rected the sale ot War Stamps and Bonds with Marcella Johnson and Betty McGrew receiving the credit tor its success. Revising our constitution into a more suitable doctrine was the beginning ot an ettort to improve the student council and, in that way, give more power to the group in directing school attairs. King Football ls First in Sport tor Huntington High School First time in many year the PONY EXPRESS went to a tootball camp to get in shape tor the season. The l942 football team was the greenest the school has ever had, but they won tive games and lost tive, a balance which can be considered a good season. The PONY EXPRESS was beaten in their opening game with C-K tor the tirst time in titteen year to the score ot 7-6. They roared back next week to deteat South Charleston I3-6. They improved to trounce Logan 20-O. The EXPRESS really rolled when they deteated Williamson 47-6. Their teet were knocked trom under them when Ashland dealt them their second deteat ZI-6. Bad luck again, Hamilton beat the EXPRESS I4-O. The EXPRESS traveled to Parkersburg tor revenge but were badly beaten 31-6. The EXPRESS came to lite in the mud and defeated St. Albans I2-O. Charleston, the traditional rival, deteated the EXPRESS 20-7 but luck was against the EXPRESS tthat day: they did push the Lions all over the tield. Success smiled again at the last. The EXPRESSMEN shellaced their city rivals 27-6 in the best tootball game they played this season. Good luck to next year's team. Other members who say service throughout the season are Jack Evans, Larry Gar- ges, Bob l-laman, Jim Keadle, and Tag Heaberlin. The outstanding players on this year's team were Bill Toothman and Bill Cravens. Toothman un- doubtedly ranlqs among the best basketball players ever to play the Pony Express. Because ot his ex- cellent shooting ancl brilliant tloor play, he was chosen tor a position on the tirst string ot the I9-43 All- State team while Bill Cravens was chosen tor a position on the third string. Hugh Shannon, Danny Hayden, and Jim Warne were three main- stays, who with Toothrnan and Cravens saw plenty ot action. Shannon was a valuable player under the basket, while Hayden and Warne were long-shot artists. Jack Dial and Dave Wilson were also excellent players around the backboard. Dial was an expert on one-hand shots while Wilson rnade uncanny shots from any position. Paul Probst, Jim Kallmerten, and Marvin Atkins worked a good tast break while Bob Davis and Wayne od long shots. Page 78 Qualifications ot a Typical Student When we are asked to vote tor the typical looy or girl in our class, we vote, not tor the outstanding student or athlete, but tor the well-rounded individual who is good in both. All things are talcen into consideration: personality, ability to lead, and willingness to tollow. Atter they are chosen, these students represent the persons who can meet any situation and mix in any crowd. We are proud ot our selections. I2 B Sara Ann Sammons. June class. A keen sense of humor that inspires wit as well as appreciation in others. How the Typical Students Are Chosen No speeches or drawn-out campaigns are needed tor this election. Each class otticer presents the name ot one boy and one girl tor this honor. Then all the Class Otficers in that grade have their choices put together and one boy and one girl are chosen tor this distinction. Every student has a chance to run, and all the students elect the couple from their class. The elections are held every year: many ditferent students are typical. EIS MERIGIVS REAT RODUCTIVE 0RKERl HE' average farmer works from sun to sun and then some. Last year, farmers of the U. S. B.. brought in a bumper crop and now they are being asked to produce even more, so as to feed our annies, our allies and the civilian popu- lation. It won't be easy, but with any kind of luck with the weather, the farmers will produce more food in spite of labor and machinery shortages. Certainly farmers deserve cmd should receive the fullest cooperation in this gigantic task. In so far as electricity can help. we are making every effort to assist i.n keeping electrical farm machinery running and in developing every possible source of electrical farm equipment. We salute the farmers of America who meet the challenge of the elements, working through torrents of rain or scorching sun with the same faithful dispatch of duty-tending livestock and crops with steadfast efficiency. We are proud to be part- ners with these u.nheralded and unsung heroes in the at- tempt to do everything possible to aid in the increasing of food production for the nation.
