He is a man who has grown close to many hearts by reason of his love for the school, his interest in achievements of his students and his inimitable personality. VVe, the Senior Class of 1931, do therefore, dedicate this 1931 Huntingtonian to our beloved principal, E. Q. Swan. 4' -------------------- -4- -4.. EDWARD Q. SWAN l,,,.v-W Aa- K , Q wi , . HEBER RICHARDS MAE NEWMAN Gul' Class Sponsors It is difficult for one to realize the trials and worries encountered by the class sponsors of such, large groups as the two graduating classes of this year, unless one has been fortunate enough to come in contact with such personalities as these sponsors by being a. member of one of the graduating classes. Their work for the betterment of our classes has been so conscientious and untiring that we wish to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and humble thanks. We, the graduating class of 1931, therefore wish to offer our deepest appreciation to these two chairmen and their co-sponsors who have so diligently put forth their time and efforts during the past three years in service to our classes in an effort to make them among the best. -18- ' X Huntin, qton l'ligl'177 Briggliiost of ull 'the days of youlli :irc sc-huul days, lie-grinning wlwn we werv luught tin' golulvn rulv Always they will be, fonclvst lll9lH1ll'll'S, YV1 ll lll'Vl'l' rn-grvt, we ll llvvvr furgvl Tha- yu-urs wx- spiuvniz in sclnml. .Xlwaix in clreunh venue visiunx uf tmnurrmx Never si vure what fuhlre 51-an will bring Tliinlcingr of tmluy, In-arts fnrvvcr guy, 'Tis of tlurz- old Iiigli school wi' will sing. S ecretary and Treasurer The drawing to the close of this school year finds the Senior B Class with two and one-half years of history marked on the memories of Huntington High. Since entering these portals in January, 1929, we have risen 'from the diifident Freshman to the high and mighty Senior. Undaunted by our knocks and falls, we have overcome all discouragements to risevto bigger and better things. Our class has given many to all of the various sports. The music, art,Qand debate has also been added to the ranks. We have a high standing in the scholastic organizations. It may be stated that the Senior B Class was well represented in the oratorical contest of this year. Our largest project for this year was the staging of the Senior B assembly, which from all accounts was enjoyed by all. Several interesting projects are being planned for the future. That which is utmost in our minds is the desire to be of service to our school. Joe Childs Arthur Viehman Sarah Louise McFadden Olive Greenwall E. WMM N, ' 'VW 'ii-.hi A rp 51631: N , The Fundamental Growth On the first day of September, 1931, a group of young aspirants for positions to emblazon the name of Huntington High School began their practice at League Park under the wise instruction and shrewd guidance of two able mentors, Coach Hol Slutz and his first assistant, Mr. Edgar G. Crow. Turning their backs to the lean season of 1929, Coaches Slutz and Crow began slowly and fundamentally to train' the aspirants for the various positions, with the result that the most im- pregnable and irresistible line of the state, along with a backfield well instructed to follow the line through the ruins, was presented to the spectators of gridiron warfares. Three losses and one draw must here be recorded. In the opening game of the season the Alumni showed enough of that spirit and prowess that made them formidable foes of the past to defeat the nascent Pony Expressf'. From that day, as the weeks rolled around, the Pony Express grew to new heights each week. But one week the growth of the Pony Express waned, and the sudden and abnormal growth of the Big Reds of Parkersburg caused the honors to be allocated equally to both teams. Dividing the honors at Parkersburg apparently stunted the growth of the Pony Express , for the Tomcats from Ashland hewed hither and thither at Fairfield Stadium to lop the growth of the Pony Express to the sound of 14--0. Convalescing slowly from the hewing of the Tomcats , Huntington, with two of its most synthetic leaves lost, was barely able to defeat the Wild Cats from Logan. Thus was the status of the Pony Express in its last game before the meeting of The Mountain Lions from Charleston. The Pony Express was to oppose an undefeated team, its most spirited rival. What would the vegetating Pony Express do? However, it continued to learn under the clever tutelage of Coaches Slutz and Crow. The day of the game arrived, and the fateful game was at hand, thought many loyal followers of the Pony Express . The Ponyl Express ap- peared before the eyes of its multifarious followers, who had come to endure the baneful medicine of defeat, if fate should ordain it. The whistle blew and the game began. The gradual declining growth of the Pony Express seemed to wilt under the scorching drives of the Mountain Lions . But there came a lull in the terrific onslaught of the Mountain Lions , and in this lull the fates had decreed that the Pony Express should grow. It did grow. It surpassed its former height and reached a taller one in enmeshing the Mountain Lions to the net of 1-L-0. Not when the final whistle blew did the Pony Express cease, but long after twilight its foliage continued to shine as if it were in the warm rays of the sun. On Thanksgiving Day the Pony Express journeyed to Augusta, Georgia, where the sudden growth of the Pony Express could not accustom itself to the long trip of transplantation on foreign soil. Augusta, Georgia trimmed its top to the limbs of 19-144. But the growth of the Pony Express' was not stunted. On November 6, its growth was greatly enhanced in defeating Seth, 18-0. Touch- ing the dome of the coveted state championship, the growth of the Pony Express surpassed all other contenders. The Pony Express suffered two serious injuries in the Dupont Manual game. Claude Starkey received a serious eye injury and Phil Baer suffered a fractured skull. As trophies the members of the Pony Express received gold footballs and white sweaters, the latter being emblematic of champions. ..71.. Without such a conception its season of 1931 would not have been a success. I speak of the season of 1931 because that part of the schedule completed in 1930 was not a success, if we shall consider victories as success. But the Pony Express acquired a knowledge which brought success, a fundamental knowledge. At the inception of the season Emmy Floyd was ineligible. At mid-year the Pony Express was deprived of the services of Tom Hallanhan and Benjamin Chapman, who graduated, and Eddie King, whose legal period of participation in high school athletics expired. After the mid-year it was several weeks before the Pony Express began to show a functioning of a team built on a foundation of fundamental training. The Pony Express began to show progress when it de- feated Ceredo Kenova, Ashland, Parkersburg, and Charleston in the later part of the season. The Pony Express defeated Charleston and Ashland twice, breaking even with Parkersburg and Ceredo Kenova. The Pony Express entered the sectional tourney at Marshall College. All opponents were decisively defeated. The Pony Express was then ready to compete in the state tourney at Buck- hannon, A great number of people anticipated the wane of the Pony Express's success. They were not aware that the Pony Express was not built on a sand bottom. Its foundation was firmly composed of the fundamental training, which is the teaching of Hol Slutz and Edgar Crow in all sports supervised by them. Thus, with such a foundation, the Pony Express defeated Terra Alta, Wheel- ing, Hundred, and Parkersburg respectively, to win the state tourney. Before the tourney opened at Buckhannon, the news of the death of Hunter Kincaid's father was received. Hunter remained at Buckhannon, playing a major part in Huntingtonis victory. There were eight men who composed the Huntington squad which participated in the tourney at Buckhannon, They were: Emmy Floyd, Paul Dunn, Elmo Pat- rick, Otto Patrick, Eugene Pee Wee Childers, Claude Parker, James Huron, and Hunter Kincaid. Elmo and Otto are twins. Emmy Floyd was given the distinction of being the tallest boy ever to have taken part in the tourney at Buckhannon. Hunter Kincaid, with 26 points, was the high scorer for the Pony Express . In the sectional tourney Hunter was chosen as captain of the All-Tourney team. Paul Dunn and Emmy Floyd were honored in the sectional tourney by being placed on the All-Tourney team. At Buckhannon Paul Dunn and Elmo Patrick were chosen to be members of the All-Tourney team. Paul plays guard, Elmo forward. All members of the Huntington High School basketball team received white sweaters with a red Hn, an award which is emblematic of champions. -77- 74775 CB -....,,xN ' I1-31 Girls' Basketball, 1930 January 2-H. 213 Alumni 18 January 9-H. 293 Kenova 10 January 16-H. 305 Logan 9 January 17-H. 253 Spencer 13 January 23-H. 223 Man 16 January 31-H. 4-23 Wayne 11 February 6-H 293 Logan 20 February 13-H 29g East Bank February 14-H 34g Wayne 11 February 20-H. 333 Kenova 10 February 21-H 293 Spencer 25 February 28-H. 28g Man 18 The little Pony Express has continued to add state championships to its already long list. In the past three years they have only been defeated once, and that was in 1929 at the hands of Pennsboro. Last year they tied with Man High after having beaten them earlier in the season. Eunice Ballengee and Ruth Coleman were injured in the last game of the season at Man High. Eunice received a fractured skull and Ruth, a badly sprained ankle. We were fortunate that these did not happen earlier in the season. Hazel Ray, Ted Bailey, and Eunice Ballengee have played three years, Ruth Coleman has one more year, and Mollie Hutchinson, high point girl, has 'two more years. This past season proved very successful for the little Pony Express , the forwards making a total of 357 points while the guards held the opposition to 171. The two very 'eiiicient managers must not be omitted from the honors. They were Frances Claypool and Mildred Mahone. -79- Q' Qu, sz Q- 1.X+ ' ,..., rgaf wr gi' M vg , F. The track season has arrived. Coach Hol Slutz and his assistant, Mr. Edgar Crow, are fortunate in having a nucleus of material from which, with their ingenious mouldings, will grow a group of boys individual enough in their preferences of track to score enough points as a group to defeat a great many of theirtfoes. On the eleventh day of April the boys received their first taste of outdoor competition for this year. Although there were no brilliant performances, much promising material exhibited itself. Jimmy Warfuel won the dashes in easy style. Jimmy holds the state record for the 4-4-0-yard dash. Although Jimmy is ineligible at present, he is expected to participate successfully later in the season. On Jimmy Warfuel's speed rests the chances of a state championship, which will make the third for Huntington High School in the school year of 1930-1931. Phil Baer and Earl Lykins pole-vaulted to a height that ought to equal that of any other com- petitors of the state. 'Carl Hickey jumped more than 20 feet in the broad-jump. Howard Ward showed plenty of form in winning the low hurdles. Phil Baer, with Jimmy Calloway following closely, won the high hurdles. Earl Lykins, who now holds the state record for the javelin, surpassed all others. Eddie Crawford hurled the discus farther than all others. Nolan Fowler, a very promising athlete, threw the hammer farther than all other competitors. Marvin Curtis won the mile run, but the time taken shows much room for improvement. Vinson Wrighti was suc- cessful in the half-mile run, but the time will have to be cut down in order' to bring him success in state meets. The shot-put was also won by Eddie Crawford. Claude Starkey, who ran second to Jimmy in the dashes, will have to carry on for H. H. S. in Jimmy's place, if Jimmy does not become eligible. Thus with such promising material, material which has competed before for H. H. S., the outlook appears successful. I shall not take upon myself the task of predicting the outcome of the state meet at Morgantown, which will take place some time in April. I do not know what material the other competing teams may present at Morgantown, but taking into consideration the experience of our boys one is inclined to have a feeling that there is another state championship in the wind. But we must wait the obscure future. -83- F i i 3 eff fi fi '-fe' - .wg -- aa.-: W f-ff M xr-'f xiyk xxx E i . !,. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Cornetet, the club has grown in both number and interest. In keeping with its policy of extending to students interested in science more information than that which is given in the class, the Crucible Club has set and maintained a high standard of club programs. In the past. year the club has been host to such men of science HS Prof. H'ron, Prof. Navarre, and Prof. Utterback. All of these men provided. very interesting instruction to the members of the club. Besides the purely scientific side of its organization, the Crucible Club has a noted social aspect. The group has been entertained at a banquet and has listened to suchenoted humoristologists as Arthur Viehman and others. Requirements for membership are that all members have an average of B or more in science. It speaks well for Huntington High School scholarship that the membership is so large. gi.. Its purpose is to create, maintain and extend an interest in the Spanish language. Thirty-two new members were taken in during the second semester, making a total of some fifty members. The c1ub's social activities are quite numerous. In February its semi-annual dance was held at Mr. Holderby's house. Sponsor Peppy, vivacious, chic, and first in everything are only a very few adjectives properly descriptive of that up and coming College Club. During first semester the club initiated fifteen new members and it was some initiation. The annual Backward Dance at Minnie Lee Lucas' was a greater suc- cess than ever. Throughout the second semester, the club accomplished many things to make itself more outstanding. One instance in particular will remain in the memories of all-the assembly-a gorgeous style show, which was afterwards proclaimed as one of the finest ever shown. In Order to make it possible forthe club to give a banquet, the members spon- sored a rummage sale and a benefit bridge party. To end the season, a magnificent banquet was given at thd Women's Club for the members and their escorts. Indeed, a great year. l 'F ,.31e.,.m.smIm.iw,a. ' ' I Gllf :KX , s . V.. . Many people are interested in dramatics and this club gives the student a chance to display his histronic ability. Minnie Lee Lucas was the president in 1930, and then Lewis Welch was chosen for the post in 1931. 1 One play was presented during the last year, The Charm School, a three- act comedy by Alice Duer Miller. It was well presented to the public, a large part of the credit being due to Miss Mary Daniel, the club sponsor and director of the play. Through her efforts the presentation was made a huge success both in, a financial and artistic way. The cast included Ella J can Standard, Lewis Welch, Minnie Lee Lucas, Ray- mond V. Humphreys, Helen Rosier, Ted Thayer, Arthur Viehman, Henry Broh, Lu Mary Wolford, Marie White, Alice Kershaw, Geraldine McVey, Eloise Wilson, and Francis Thuma. During May the organization presented a two-act comedy in assembly. The name of the play was He Married a Dumb Wife, by Anatole France. This is practically all that was accomplished with the exception of a banquet and two parties given by the members at various times during the year. , -132- WlmWiilllillllmlmllhlhiilwliimniulw1,.1,M A imigt ':,Whitt101,311inauw,,,t1,1lbtlliia,,:man!in,flmslfuntlliiutimumlllrii 'li ' 'N E 1 !!l frr nu N44 5pY?5r We ,, iff? ROLLA D. CAMPBELL, President Chamber of Commerce. -159- f 5 7 '5 The Reason Why-H Graduates of Huntington High School are solicited to enter courses in many busi- ness schools because such schools have learned by experience that the Teaching Staff and the Faculty of the High School have taught the prescribed courses so thoroughly that graduates therefrom are above the average in educational equipment. Ask your teacher or any member of the faculty concerning our school and we believe they will give you a very favorable opinion of our ideals and teaching methods. i The West Virginia Business College Saving Is the First Requirement of Success Self-denial, taught by thrifty habits, has been responsible for more successes in one gener- ation than all the lucky breaks of history. By saving a small amount week after week you can have a larger sum for your rainy day, than if you depend upon occasionally saving larger amounts. Large amounts have a way of becom- ing smaller, while small amounts have a definite way of growing. Because of these facts, it is better to start with a small sum, and by adding to it regularly increase it to a substantial size. Make your start today. However small your start may be, remember it's keeping everlastingly at it that counts. Huntington? Member of the Federal Reserve System The First Huntington ational Bank Huntington, W.
