Every Huntington College stu- dent has a well balanced sched- ule of academic and social occu- pations to till his college lite. Each year the academic sched- ule is changed to provide for a broader education. Social lite also keeps pace with many new activities for the H. C. student. From the 7:30 a.m. Monday Social Science class to the Sun- day evening worship, the Hunt- ington student has a share in many events that help to en- lighten him. From September to June of each school year the stu- dent has opportunity to grow academically, religiously, and socially. 0 CCc'H1CIllCBlIlIlll1CCS

N reel nts! unit' Elie iitil ifeigce Three score and ten years ago, on June 1, 1897, a large college building lnow Old Adl was com- pleted by the Huntington Land Association. The last meeting of the Hartsville College Board of Trustees was held on June 15 and that institution, located about AO miles southeast of Indianapolis, turned over all books, records of proceedings, stu- dents' grades, and even some faculty members to Central College to be opened in the new building at Huntington. Hartsville College, chartered as Hartsville Academy in 1850, thus was the fore- runner of Central College, which changed its name to Huntington College in 1917. The new institution opened its doors to students on September 22, 1897. Eighty-five students, study- ing in classical, philosophical, or scientific courses, in the preachers' normal course, or in the two-year preparatory academic course, graced the new col- lege. The faculty consisted of five regular pro- fessors, including President C. H. Kiradofe who also taught four courses, and a volunteer Music pro- fessor. The new building was located in a former wheat field, north of the city of Huntington. The College Park community at that time consisted of sixteen dwellings, plus the college building. During its first year of operation, Central Col- lege received 52,397.22 from the following sources: special donations 528699, conference col- lections, 51,320,327 tuition, 5997.66, and other sources 51225. By the end of the first four years of operation, Central College had building and grounds, equipment, lots, etc, valued at 560,500, with an indebtedness of 5444.00 lGeneral Confer- ence Proceedings, 1901, p35l. The student body at this time numbered 102, with six candidates for graduation. From the Conference Proceedings of 1901, which included the 1897-98 birth year of our College, we find two interesting items: 111 Besides the amounts of moneys listed above, there has been raised in subscription from the citizens of the Park lCoIlege Parkl and of the City of Huntington for improving the park grounds a little over 52,000 most of which has been collected and worked out on the grounds. Thus we find that original seeds for our present benevolent town-gown relationship and the Huntington College Foundation began with the birth of the institution seventy years ago. 121 The Senior Bishop of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, who presided at the Quadrennial General Conference held in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in May, 1901, was Milton Wright, D.D. At that very time, Bishop Wright's two illustrious sons, Orville and Wilbur, were experimenting with gliders, and they launched their first successful airplane flight two years later. Bishop Wright's name has been memorialized in our Wright Men's Residence Hall. Upon the foundations described, what has Huntington College become three score and ten years later? An affirmer of the faith liberal arts college and seminary, with approximately forty- five academic and administrative faculty, serving six hundred students annually. A physical plant of ten maior buildings, many faculty residences, a 99 acre campus plus a 77 acre Biological Research Station near Huntington, and evaluation of three million dollars. An Alma Mater to some three thousand students. An enduring example proving Matthew 6:33, Christian character and true culture blend. Three score years and ten. The span of life. The air age. The developmental years for Huntington College, upon which foundations we expect to grow into a greater, more positive, educational force for Christ, the Church, and the Community.
