This city claims a population ol nearly sixteen thousand. Upon the scene come more than two hundred players and directors. These people have come i'r-.rm many states in the Union and several foreign countries. XVe notice people engaged in activities and duties in the various buildings around the campus. First in view is XVright Memorial Hall where the men students reside. Our attention is directed to the residence ol one group of women students which is situated at the rear ol' XVright Memorial Hall. Next we see the recently-constructed Loew-,-Xlumni Library which is directly across the street lronr Livingston Hall. the u'omen's dormitory. lVe lollou' on to Col- lege Hall. the administration huilding. XVe come non' to the gymnasium and the heating plant. Continuing around the campus we notice the science huilding. As advisor of the class of '55 and as one who is always willing to counsel with students, he has done much to deserve recognition. Mr. Paine has always shown intense interest and enjoyment in the activities of the college. His desire to im- prove conditions that would be a benefit to the college program has been evident during the years he has been on the faculty. Because of his Christian testimony and his in- terest in the activities of the students, we, the lX Inemosyne staff of '55, do hereby dedicate this yearbook to a faculty member whom we are proud to have at Huntington College. 8 Directors administration Dr. lilmer Becker. president Dr. lilmer Becker, president of Huntington College, devotes much time and interest in per' lorming the duties of administering a Christian college. Dr. Becker is 2111 alumnus ol' Huntington Col- lege :is ll graduate ol the Class of 1923. He has served as president of this college since 1941. Marietta Crowe, Elaine l'ripp, Donald Betterly. sophomores The sophomores arrived on campus last fall slightly depleted in numbers, but full ol' pep and spirit. Everyone had a wonderful time at the ice cream freeze sponsored by the Student Council, and the greenies were beginning to think that what they had heard about the sophs and upper- classmen could not possibly be true. But their dreams were soon shattered by the full force of a typical sophomore-plauned initiation which ended in a tug-of-war across the Little river. The sophomore men made quick work of the war and within a few minutes pulled the dripping and disillusioned l'rosh up on the bank. Headed by a fine group ol' class ol'l'icers namely, Robert Baker, president: Elaine Tripp, vice presidentg Marietta Crowe, secretary, and Don Betterly, treasurer: they continued their efforts to be the most unforgettable class that Huntingon College had ever met. Throughout the year their treasury and general enthusiasm for the school swelled. They were proud of the way many members turned out to do more than their share of work on the Student Lounge. They hope to return next year to enjoy the finished product. They were human-they had their disagreements, but nothing could stop them from working together when they wanted to see something done. Having' survived freshman initiation and those dreaded beanies. the freshmen are proud to say they are a part of this wonderful institution, Huntington College. They admit that the sophomore fellows succeeded in winning' the tug-of-war through the Hlabash following the Freshman Day parade down .jefferson Street. However. the freshmen girls were able to pull the sophomore girls through the spray of water on the campus to win the girls' tug-of-war. They began the year by electing their class officers, who were: Max Fordyce. president: Fred Foushee, vice president: Don Frede- rick, treasurer, and jean Grafstrom, secretary. The student council representative is Carolyn Huntley and the alternate is Betty lYalton. Sarah lViley represents the class on the library committee. Miss Dawn Betterly is the class advisor. The first social event the freshmen attended was an ice cream freeze during which the freshmen were sent on a scavanger hunt. This social was sponsored by the Student Council so the members of the freshman class could more easily become acquainted with their classmates. The Student Council is an elected body with representatives and the president from each class. Maurice Reed was elected by the Student Union to carry the responsibilities of president of the Student Council. The Y-Retreat was at the Bluffton State Park on May 28. This is a day set aside lor spiritual and recreational activities. Throughout the day such activities as boating, volley hall, tennis and hasehall were carried on to supplement the up- lilting devotional services. The daily prayer meetings began several years ago when some students recognized the need lor united prayer in behall ol Christian Life Em- phasis lVeek. The prayer meetings have now be- come a vital part ol' many student's daily ZICLIVIUCS. Religious services at the county jail are con- ducted bi-weekly by members of the organization. All students on the campus of Huntington College who are in training for full-time Christian services are eligible for membership in the Clericus. Clericus is a service organization. A very important part of this service is the series of monthly meetings planned each year which are designed to give valuable help to the missionary and ministerial students in the Seminary and in the under-graduate school. This year the subject for the meetings was Preparation for Church Extension, in which the spiritual, legal, financial and or- ganizational preparation for the church extension which is so im- portant to the well-being of the United Brethren church was discussed by speakers who were qualified to speak on these subjects. To further interest in the Seminary, Clericus members were active in the planning and carrying out of the Seminary Day janu- ary 17, 1955. Dr. XV. XVarren Filkin, head of the Department of Christian Education at Northern Baptist Seminary. Chicago, was the speaker for the day. The various events included a speech in chapel, two workshops, and an address on Developing Leadership in the Local Church following a banquet for the seminary students and their guests. The Foresters were paced by two seniors, a junior and a freshman. Maurice Reed with his best season, added to his many laurels by breaking the all-time Hunting- ton College scoring record. The previous record held by Marshall Schoell' with F558 points was eclipsed by Reed who garnered 3572 points in I9 games. Les Ullleman with his best season often led the Foresters in scoring and rebounding. Hal Platt was the other senior ol' the squad and these three will be sorely missed. Gene Buzzard, an- other senior, was unable to play this year because of an injury. 56 Paul Hammel was the playmaker ol' the team and led in assists. He also came in second only to Reed as high in free-throw percentage. He and Gene Gibson were the outstandingjuniors of the team and provided a potent back court. Tom Rethlake, the Foresters' sensational fresh- man Center Covered both offensive and defensive boards in line form besides being the second high scorer. The high point of the Forester season was the big game with lXIanchester. The Foresters walked off with an eight point win for the first time in many years. It is cus- tomary that the lirst week ol' March be set aside lor this series ol' revival services. The meetings are in Davis Auditorium each evening, Monday through the lol- lowing Sunday. The morning assembly periods are conducted as a part ol' the Christian Lile limphasis YVeek services. This year Dr. Clyde YV. Meadows, '25, pastor ol' the Chambersburg. Pennsyl- vania United Brethren church was the speaker lor Christian Lile Emphasis l'Veek. Dr. Meadows has had much ex- perience in working with young people and his ability to understand their needs and problems makes him a valuable Christian leader. During the week-end ol' Christian Lile Emphasis NVeek many friends visited the college with the majority being ol college or near-college age. They found this week-end a line opportunity to learn how the students ol a Christian college live. Special activities were planned to ac- quaint the visitors with Huntington College. The Communion service Sunday alter- noon served as a time ol' re-consecration and dedication to a renewed lile which was realized during the week of services. The Religious l,il'e and Service Com- mittee was responsible lor making the general plans and appointing committees to carry out the details ol the Christian Lile Emphasis X'Veek services.
