We dedicate our 1959 CAULDRON to the American school, the melting pot of the nation, to our own particular school, Huntington Beach High, and to all that it represents. Here, on our campus, are representatives of several different nationalities, and this year our exchange stu- dent has helped to further a better understand- ing of her own particular country. This year will be the last one we will spend together as one school loeca-use of the new Westminster High School. With this lssue of the CAULDRON, those of Westminster say not goodbye, but only so long, for we all remain in a larger melting pot - the United States. 93 ,gy f . ,. . After losing the season opener to Laguna Beach on the last play of the game, the Oiler attention was focused on heavily favored Fremont High School. Huntington was unable to score, but put up a strong defensive game which held the L.A. team to only 9 points. The Oilers split the remaining two practice games by defeating Orange 13 to 12 and losing to Tustin by the same score by which they had won the week before. Equipped with a new formation, the Double Wing, the Varsity gridders got set for the league opener against Fullerton. After leading for three quar- ters the Oilers fell to the Indians in the last two minutes by a score of 12 to 7. Through a series of miscues and fumbles, Newport Beach dumped the Oilers by a 32 to 7 score. Santa Ana scored in the fourth quarter to give the Orange and Black team another fourth quarter defeat with a 13 to 6 score. Undaunted by past scores, the H.B. team got set for the game of the year against Anaheim. What happened that night seems to be history. Play- ing almost a perfect game, Huntington stunned the Colonists by scoring 26 points before Anaheim even knew what was happening. The final score was 26 to 12. ln the last game of the season H.B. proved that their victory over Ana- heim was no accident. The Varsity grid team trounced Garden Grove by a 28 to 7 score. Coach Vern Vallercamp, assisted by Coaches Jack Hedges and Ken Moats, led the team through the exciting season. Invited to several large races, the Oilers won a first place at the Mount San Antonio invitational, the nation's largest and also the Compton Cup. On November 19, Huntington Beach captured the Sunset League fi- nals and ruled as league champions. The following Wednesday they defeated sixteen schools from Long Beach and Orange County, marking the first Orange County team to even win the Coast Area C.l.F. Prelim- inaries. From there it was on to the C.l.F. Finals at Mt. San Antonio, where a tremendous season reached its climax as Huntington Beach took second place in Southern California, defeating ten teams represent- ing over 200 schools. The year 1958 saw Joe Garret and Frank Duarte break the nine minute barrier over our own 1.8 mile course with 8:55 and 8:57 times. After winning its first 3 meets by wide margins, the Oilers battled Newport Harbor down to the wire before losing 61-213 to 42-113 in the Sunset League opener. The coaches feel that the team will register an upset or two before the season ends. Iron -man for the Oilers has been Bill Reed, who has turned in top performances while running the 100, 440, and Broad Jump. Don Herman, Larry Anderson, Lloyd Fortune, and Ron Paterno have also done fine iobs in the sprints. The tradition of having good hurdlers was continued this year with Stan Ishii and John Purdy skimming over the highs and lows. ln the distances, Layne Neugart 18801 and Joe Gar- rett lMilel have chalked up some impressive wins. The field events were an Oiler strong point with the Pole Vault topped by George Farquhar and Frank Duarte and the high iump by Farauhar and Dick Kaae. H.B. also sported four 45 foot shot putters-Tim Johnson, Ray Rahn, Fred Hokanson, and Bill Rose. Bill Reed and Stan Ishii in the Broad Jump round out the top varsity performers on one of Huntington's best Varsity teams in many years. SEASON SCORES H.B. 84 ........ In the next game against Excelsior, southpaw Terry Floyd came within a single hit of pitching a no-hitter and led Huntington to a 3 to 0 victory. The team went on to triumph over Wilson, Orange, and Mater Dei again. A game at North Torrance was called because of darkness with the score at an li-1'I deadlock. So far the only other high school to topthe Oilers has been Jordan. Most of Huntington's players can handle many positions and still come up with a winning combination. One of the most inspirational-our Christmas Nativity-was made all the more so by the fine music provided by our choir. Maw The orchestra also performs throughout the school year, and though it is not so large, its music is top quality. One more necessary element in our melting process, that is. Harmonaires: Sharon Carl, Mary Dennis, Pat Paris, Dorothy Allred, Robert Garrett, Roger - up Williams, Dorsey Brady, Larry Anderson. The Harmonaires, our smallest musical group, have offered their services at various moments throughout the year. A highlight of their activities was their performance on the television program Spotlight on Youth . ll The Girls' Glee Club held an important part in the Christmas nativity in December, singing carols anol hymns from the balcony. Many of these girls are looking forward to singing in the choir in future years. ZCZ!
