The Oiler Middies hit for ten in a row and a new school Bee record, before the Cards of Whittier copped a 4-l--38 win in the quar- terfinals of the Excelsior tournament, and then added a list of thirteen straight before meeting the Vikes. ln the individual spot- light. Del Duran and George Thornton made the all-tourney squad at Samohi, and Keith Guthrie and Jim Jolly were named as team captain and the most valuable player respectively on the Oiler quintet. Invitational Tournament champs, Coach Lee Mos- steller's varsity hoopsters racked a classy ZZ wine-l loss season slate, picking up ten straight before dropping a pair to the Alumni and Long Beach St. Antbony's and then notching twelve more before bowing to Laguna's undefeated Orange League champions in a prac- tice rematch and to top seeded Nlt. Carmel of the Catholic League in the CIF playoffs. ln the individual spotlight, the H.B.'s lanky pivotman 6-6 Dick Stricklin was selected first string CIF, first string Sunset League, all-H.B. Tournament, and the L.A. Examiner Player of the Sunset League , as well as picking up the Sunset League scoring crown Ctotal pointsj and the CIF scoring championship faveragel. Dick smashed the H.B. Sun- set League, and CIF scoring standards when he swisbed 54 markers against Orange, and also wrote in new H.B.U.I-I.S. and league season scoring marks, hitting for Zol in IO loop tilts and Sll in 26 tilts. XVayne Young repeated on the all-league squad for the second straight year and also took all-tournament honors along with Bob Boswell.
