The 1966 Hells Pomegran Huntingdon College i c Montgomery, Alabama Mrs. Irene Munro has been a source of strength for all who would accept her guidance and there have been many. She has approached our secure little minds cautiously, taught us without condescension, challenged us, and enlarged the horizons of our lives until they begin to approach the broad vistas of her own. It has been good that our few years here have been also some of her many, for we have gained know-ledge of ourselves and of others by knowing her. This woman’s philosophy will live long after she and Huntingdon College have been forgotten: “The wider the circle of light, the wider the circle of darkness.” 3 Contents ULiLl Opening Section Faculty.......... At least some momentary insights into campus problems were gained, however, making the three-day student leader caucus worthwhile. And there were plans, and plans, for helping the freshmen through their tumultuous first few weeks. They arrived in hordes-starry-eyed, blase, frightened —all to be worked into the miniature (considering our size) hut compressed and hectic millstream which is daily (and nightly) life at a small Southern college. 7 They endured. While student advisors and Executive Council members paraded their wisdom and sophistication before three hundred fifty freshmen, those freshmen endured. Through communal picnic suppers, denominational receptions. Publications I'nion parties, square dances, formal dinners, talent shows featuring some of their own, and those torturing, transmogrifying tests, they somehow endured. And thus, they were made ready for anything, even that bright Monday morning when they would walk into Delchamps Strident Center empty-handed and come out into the sunlight earn ing a schedule card and a sheet full of numbers. 9 10 Kilt Week, like the rain, came and went. Hager to rack up acti it points, freshmen enthusiastically staged marches and sit-downs around campus. After the initial morning of wet, the packs of Roman slave rats perhaps grew weary in the tremendous surge of excitement. Once again, however, the class of (if) persevered, proving that not even thunder and lightning could dampen their spirits during Rat Week. 11 The second and last day of Hat Week witnessed the miraculous transformation of Homan togas into Dracula-likc cloaks, as hundreds of slave rats became hundreds of monster rats. While juniors and seniors calmly munched their sandwiches in the cafeteria, spirited little mice purged their emotions by hanging sophomore class president Clay Harshbarger (in effigy). The climax to the whole glorious spectacle was Hat Court, a tense evening of horror dreamed up in the nightmares of a few diabolical sophomores. The affair featured such events as egg shampoos, leg shows, and delicious cheese banquets, and was enjoyed by all. especially the freshmen. 13 14 Rat Week was over, and freshmen and upperclassmen alike were faced with the necessity of studying. Of course, there were many who didn’t. If they were clever, they discovered ways of making the grade; if they weren’t, they left between semesters, not to return. 1'here were the usual divertissements, including a production by members of the freshman class and transfer students of two short plays in the theatre-of-the-absurd genre. 15 16 The biggest divertissement of first semester, coming shortly before Thanksgiving, was beauty weekend. Girls invited boy friends from the ever-dependable University and Auburn; some were from such far-away shrines as Emory and Vanderbilt. Our men brought high school sweethearts to Fairview Tech for the event. Some few Huntingdon students came with Huntingdon students, but their numbers seemed small. On Friday night, twenty finalists of varying degrees of beauty modeled their most stunning creations on a heavenly stage. The top eight were presented at the ball the following evening, in the hubbub of gasps, clapping, and ethereally bright smiles. 17 18 Shortly before semester’s end, Huntingdon suffered the loss of its beloved Charles Turner, dean of students and advisor to Publications Union, when he accepted the presidency of Tennessee Wesleyan College. The school went all out to wish him well, trying to display its gratitude for all that he had done. It was only a feeble attempt, for what Dean Charles Turner had achieved at and for Huntingdon College could not be put into words or gifts. 19 Christmas arrived at Huntingdon, and with it we were treated to the usual festivities. Massey and Ligon Halls (otherwise known at Yuletide as Huntingdon's Kiss-Kiss Clubs) sponsored open houses to celebrate the season. Everyone climbed or squeezed into their holiday finery for the Christmas banquet, where they were treated to steaks and entertainment. The music department had its annual Christmas affair, and there was the usual round of club parties, two of the most notable being those given by the Modern Language Club and the Psychology Club. The former escapade starred a rather naughty and very jolly French Saint Nick, and the latter attraction featured a real Viennese Santa Freud. 20 21 ■ Christmas and Dean Turner vanished and with them vanished the gaiety of the last days before vacation. In a few weeks after everyone’s return from home and holidays, finals were to begin. Some freshmen actually began preparing for their exams, but a spirit of dread accompanied by unwillingness or inability to study was felt by the majority; and they expressed this mood in various ways. 22 23 As usual, the most frivolous part of the academic year was the beginning; of second semester. The relief of pressure was in evidence; few worried about classes, telling themselves that deadlines were weeks away, not actualities. A small group called the industrious set. however, began to lookahead and at least started brave plans for keeping up with their assignments, thereby avoiding the necessity of staying out of bed on the night before the first test of the term. 24 25 26 Hawk Day arrived, welcomed with a glorious fanfare of convocation programs, consequently anticipated eagerly by would-be athletes and others who merely wanted another escape from studying. The central point of all this light and sound (especially the latter!) was undoubtedly Friday evening’s faculty-student basketball game, passionately looked forward to by students with memories of the previous year’s ceremony. Other events included Volkswagen races, powderpuff football, uninhibited dances, and the big game Saturday night, which we lost. 27 Since Huntingdon is a church-supported school, it naturally follows that there should he a Christian Life Emphasis Week twice each year. What could have been a slow six days was considerably enlivened this year by our two stimulating speakers-The delightful Bishop Kenneth Goodson spoke first semester, using a lilting Irish brogue; he was followed by I)r. Ted Runyan from Emory, who led us to the conclusion that God is not dead, but not before we had all examined our faiths more carefully. Not in the religious vein, but truly meaningful, was the awarding by Huntingdon of a Doctor of Laws degree to Dean Paul Stone, surely one of the most deserving persons ever to receive such recognition. Unfailingly a champion for the cause of academic freedom, he has symbolized the best of Huntingdon College through the years; and for this we are all grateful. 28 Spring came to Fairview Tech; and with it came life, of both the plant and animal variety. This was a time of relieving tensions by performing eccentrically, a time of letting off steam by putting aside inhibitions. During these days, the unexpected was the set pattern of existence; and anything went— except, of course, what the catalog said. 29 Si 30 31 Finals were over, and sadly we said goodbye to our wonderful life at Huntingdon College—some of us to return in only a short time, others torn from their happy existence here forever. The departing ones smiled, but in their hearts were feelings of despondent anxiety as images of the harsh, cruel world passed before their eyes. But, the motto emblazoned in their minds, they left through the same portals they had entered four years before, living finally, the sweet sorrow of parting. 32 33 Faculty Hubert Searcy, Ph.D., 1.I..I). The production of nine issues of a newspaper, three issues of a creative writing anthology, and a yearbook is a mammoth task which can he broken down into three mammoth tasks, requiring a tremendous amount of creative energy from the editorial staffs. We seek to do our share in performing what is now the major task of student government, to dispel the ever-growing apathy found on campus. We hope you will agree that Publications I'nion has succeeded in the fulfillment of its aim to a degree. If you are startled hv certain sections in this annual and the other publications, tell us if you like. ITiat, to some extent, has been our goal: for nothing is worth reading which does not provoke thought. We hope, however, that there arc also pages which will make you smile and often laugh outright; that, too, has been our aim. And (at the risk of sounding sentimental), since a yearl ook is primarily a record of experience, we want this publication especially to be a source of memories, not all pleasant, in those years when we have cast off our sophisticated pose and come to realize that we loved Huntingdon all the time. Suzy Kuckman and her staff are a credit to Publications I’nion and to Huntingdon College, l or the enduring fruits of their labor, we are grateful. Sincerely. The Flying Buttress is finished, somehow, except this page that is sitting in my typewriter waiting to say something. There are many people that I need to thank. First, Mr. Dean and Mrs. Chappell, without whose steadying influence 1 would he dictating this letter from within the hounds of a straitjacket. Also, the indispensable Terry Spruell. who did all the good stuff, and the patient Steve Carmichael, who tried to capture on film the mood of every-day and every-night Huntingdon. Thanks also to Robert Phatorus—whom we will certainly miss—and Mr. Scott, for coming out to the campus at every strange hour to take pictures of us; the Searevs, the Red Blounts and the Herman Aronovs for letting us go into their homes to take pictures; Dr. Bridges, the staff psychologist; and the administration and business office for their cooperation. Huntington has many faces, and each of us sees a different face—thus each of us has his own separate view of Huntingdon College. We hope that we have shown the aspect of Huntingdon that you find most familiar. This yearbook is, as is Huntingdon, nothing except what you find in it. We have tried to record some of the events and sentiments of the academic year 19( 5-( ( so that you w ill have a book of memories, not a pictorial history of what was on the activities calendar. Also, we have tried to go about our task with a new approach, strictly our own. I hope that, in your eyes, we have been successful, for this is your book—a book for the student of this college. Some of us leave a little wiser and a little better prepared for the future, and some of us just leave, and thank our lucky stars that we managed to get our philosophy requirement out of the way. But, however we go, and wherever we go. it’s been a good year.
