Recognizing the tact thot spirit implies something intangible and thot our school spirit is really made up of present, tangible elements we can enumerate, we must concede that the Huntingdon Spirit, as well os being the spirit of the present, hos remained basically the same over the years. We only have to think a little to see that the Spirit of Huntingdon contributes more to our attitudes than we contribute to it. Makes our senses flame... What is the reason for this unchanging attitude? Why hos our school spirit grown without diverting from the original course set when the college was born? Why is every new idea and action clothed with the traditional Huntingdon attitude? Surely there must be something that keeps us on the present course, but where is the constant reminder of the unstated spirit? We believe thot the spirit of a college is symbolized in its Alma Mater, and our school is no exception. In our Alma Mater we also find the seeds and the nourishm ;nt for the future development of our school spirit. In this year's BELLS AND POMEGRANATES, we have attempted to show this, ond we hope that in years to come, when you browse through this book, the words of our college song will bring the Spirit of Huntingdon back to you in its fullest flowering. DEDICATION Certainly one of the greatest things about Huntingdon College is its faculty, and we are lucky that it is possible for us to know our instructors. In fact, the faculty is so much a part of our campus life that many times we get to know a professor who has never taught us. We are proud to dedicate the 1964-65 BELLS AND POMEGRANATES to such a professor. We have all known her in some capacity. She is almost always on campus, and she is never wasting time. Her industry amazes us, and every job she undertakes is done with great competence. Some of us have worked with her. Some of us have been advised by her. Some of us have known just her smile and her friendly manner. Goethe once said that a good teacher is one who stirs our heart while increasing our knowledge. She is such a teacher. There are so many of us for whom she has turned a course of instruction into a course of inspiration. What she has given us cannot be lost with the years. Setting aside the dates for Hawk Day Senior Play, the Beauty Ball, the Spring Formal, getting a new Student Government Association on the move in order to serve a larger student body more effectively, and readying the various organizations to meet the particular needs of the students, are only a few of the important things to which this session of student leaders attend. FRESHMAN ORIENTATION During freshmen orientation the freshmen are welcomed by the administration, helped by student advisors, and given opportunities to begm losting friendships. Tests and more tests are given during the week. Recreation and refreshments are provided at the nightly parties sponsored by various organizations on campus. Mr� Octet and Carol welcome Frethmen. ■ 90 WEEK The Freshmen hear about Rat Week before they hear about tests. Soon the campus is dotted with heads wearing maroon and gray beanies. The Sophomores try to keep the Freshmen in suspense concerning the exact date of their doom. When it finally arrives, the campus is in for a battle of class spirit. Though the Sophomores are traditionally given the advantages, it isn't long before the Freshmen have the Sophomores secretly going to the infirmary for iron tonic and pep pills. The Social Standards Board went all out to give us a thoroughly entertaining show. The stage was decorated in a Japanese motif, but best of all, there were twenty beautiful girls. The Beauty Ball was held the night following the Revue and was one of the most enjoyable for-mals of the year. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the eight beauties who grace the pages of the 1965 BELLS AND POMEGRANATES. Thanks to expert writing and directing, the satire was pointed, direct, and highly amusing. SENIOR PLAY SKIT NIGHT The Sophomore Class was the winner of skit night this year. Their Tragedy of MacCamp-bell was a take-off on Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth. The Junior Class presented Gau-deamus Awful-Itch which portrayed graduation exercises of the Senior Class. Finding the oracle consists in breaking a tremendously difficult code which is authored by certain vindictive members of the mighty Senior Class. The oracle is usually not found until after the break of dawn. The harder the code, the more jubilant the Seniors, but the spirit of the Juniors is one that cannot be broken. During Christmas, one finds students busily engaged in extra-curricular activities—big sister-little sister parties, open houses, skits, and organization parties. This year the German Club presented a play about German and American Christmas traditions. The Rankin brothers provided a night of entertainment at the Delchamps Student Center. Campus help was remembered with gifts. The Chorale and members of the Drama Department participated in Miracle in Montgomery. The spirit of Christmas was felt on campus. They then stretched their winning streak to six before being upset by Erskine College in the Holiday Invitational Tournament in Rome, Georgia, during the Christmas Holidays. Wins in this series included Mercer University. La-Grange. Birmingham Southern, Livingston Stofe, University of Mexico, and Florence State. After suffering their third defeat at the hands of St. Bernard. the boys whipped Troy ond strong Mississippi College before a road trip cost them two games. These two losses were to Troy ond LaGrange and Millsaps was downed in between. The home stretch of the regular season saw the Hawks defeating Mill-saps and Florence. The season finale was the best, ond the Hawks were on the high side of a 94-91 score over North Alabama Rival, Athens. This important 27th District N.A.I.A game was enjoyed by a near capacity crowd as was a number of the Hawk games. The college was able to come up with more than its share of the outstanding high school athletes. This factor allows the competition to be better each successive year. This was true this year. Sopbomoret The 1964-65 Seniors again dominated the football scene and took the top spot when they defeated the Sophomores in the next to the last game of the season to cinch the title. This years Seniors have won the intramural football trophy every year since they were Sophomores. The Freshmen followed the same pattern as they have in the post and finished in lost place. The Sophomores finished second and the Juniors placed third. Outstanding ployers for their respective teams were Davis Brock, Leonard Hall, Fred Simpson, and Bob Fike for the Seniors,- Thom Pebworth, David Smith, and Bob Sternenberg for the Juniors; Rusty Keldorph, Mike Merrium and Hank DeVasey for the Sophomores,- John Schremser and Melvin Moore for the Freshmen. Girls' football? The Women's Physical Activity program is under the direction of the Women's Athletic Council. This council organizes the activities in o manner which promotes competition between the several women's housing units ond the town women. Such competition as hit pin, volley ball, basketball, softball, and other team activities is in the program. Each year for Hawk Day, the women of the Physical Education Department and other athletic-minded young ladies contribute a great deal to the festivities by participating in the annual Powder Puff Football Game. This game is played under the men's intramural rules, and it not only gives the girls an opportunity to have a good time, but it teaches them something about the gome. 176 Plenty of time. Battery Mates The Baseball Hawks begin their fifth season under the direction of Coach John Mabry this year. Some of the same faces will appear on the diamond that you saw there last year, but a couple of people will not be present. Key players lost by way of graduation were Rodney Bell, center fielder, and Mike McKeen, first baseman. Coach Mabry will have a job replacing these stalwarts. Returning stars include Seniors Benny Caldwell and Fred Simpson, Juniors Ed Oliver, Butch Eornest, and David Smith, and Sophomores, Bill Sawyer, David Muskett. and Russell Lackey. Several Freshmen and Transfers will be counted on heavily to replace players lost by way of graduation. One of these is Frankie Jones, a tansfer from Alobama Christian College. Two local Freshmen who should see a lot of action are Wayne Mitchell from Robert E. Lee High School, and John Schremser from Sidney Lanier High School. Mitchell is a left-handed pitcher and Schremser is an outfielder. By the middle of February each of these boys has already been working out in preparation for the upcoming season. This in itself would indicate that there is a great amount of desire in this young team. From all indications the Baseball Hawks will continue the winning ways of their basketball counterparts.
