Shingler ECRETARIE Uni' school secretaries this past year were Mrs, jean XVei r. Miss Ruth Rhodes, and Mrs. Marlene Kidd. all former graduates of lluntingdon Iligh School. These young ladies were re- sponsible for the smooth running of the school oflices. Mrs. MR-ir was capablv assisted with her work in Mr. Cettyis ollice by Miss Rhodes. and Mrs. Kidd helped our principal. Mr. Shingler. with his varied daily duties. The school secretaries took care of the correspoiidence. the paper work. and other business matters of the high school, Thex' were always ready' to greet visitors cordially. and to lend their assistance. Thev deserve our thanks for the part they plaved in helping to make Hunt- ingdon Area High School a well-organ- ized unit. highly commended for its eflziciencv. Q S PRI CIP L As principal. it was Mr. Shingler's duty to oversee the general manage- ment of our high school and to solve the problems that came with each school dav. However. no matter how busy he was. he always found time to listen to any troubled student who asked his advice. A genuine interest in boys and girls. as well as in their social. academic, and sports activities. made him capable of filling the responsible position of head of the high school, His understanding of teen-age problems and attitudes, his patience. his ready smile, and his will- ingness to help in trying situations will long be remembered by students of lluntingdon High School. --1-- ' ras Our secretaries. SENIOR The Class of 1959, rated as one of the most successful to he graduated from Huntingdon High School in many years, owed its success mainly to a fortunate choice of officers. These officers, under the wise direction of their faculty adviser, Nlrs. Barley, were active in organizing worthwhile class projects. Another factor that contrihuted to the suc- cess of the seniors as a class was a hard-working Advisory Board. Two students were elected from each senior home room to represent that room on the hoard. Those elected were Brad Snyder and Arlene Stapleton. room T. john Xleloy and Judy Peters. room 15: l,ouise liv- eretts and Elizaheth Crove. room 22: Barry lloover and Floyd lletriclt. room 27: and james Coen and Judy Deegan. room 30. Xlemhers of the class participated in all the athletic activities that were carried out under high school jurisdiction. They also represented their class and their school in major music 30 events, hoth choral and instrumental. including county, district. and state festivals. They were active in the Tri-Hi-Y, F. F. A., and F. T. A. cluhs and served as much-needed lihrary as- sistants. They took part in many school pro- ductions. including the animal junior-Senior Prom and the Senior Class Playg and they con- trihuted hoth time and effort to such activities as the Newsreal and the Argus. Extremely successful financially. the Class of 1959 sponsored various money-making ac- tivities, including hake sales. rallies. pep tag davs, and peanut sales. all requiring the full co- operation of the class memhers. This same spirit of cooperation was carried oyer into their daily classes. thus enahling them to take full advantage of their educational op- portunities. Their hope. expressed when they left high school. was for a happy and profitable future that would continue to hring honor to their class and to their :Xlma Nlater. VVhen you look at an annual such as this, you probably study the pictures. read the ar- ticles. and think nothing of the effort that made it what it is. Behind the scenes, however, much hard work and co-operation are necessary if an effective job is to be done. l.et's look back quickly to see how the 1959 Argus started and then grew to maturity. VVhen school opened last fall, work had already begung a dummy had been made and committees had been chosen. The first task of these committees was to select the theme and compile ideas for the cover and art work. Next, the Photography Committee set to work. Their task entailed choosing and proc- essing pictures already taken, and setting up a photographefs schedule for needed pictures. This done, the processed pictures were identi- fied. captioned. and sent to the Canton Engrav- ing Company. Other committees were also hard at work. By Thanksgiving, all the articles had been writ- ten and turned in to the Literary Editors for a RGUS preliminary check, after which they were typed by commercial students and rechecked. The Sports Editors had also set about writing re- views of all the games of the season. Very soon the Business Nlanagers were out soliciting funds from the businessmen of our community. These helped, in part. to finance our year book. During the winter and spring months, all the committees continued their work. They, to- gether with the f1IClllty advisers and the Editor- in-Chief, labored endlessly to iron out every detail that would prevent this yearbook from being the best they could produce. Some of the work was done in activity periods, but much mere of it was done in after-school and evening meetings. Late in the spring, after the student orders had been placed and the final copy had been proofread and sent to the printer, our work was completed. XVe, the staff. hope this book will be for you, as it will be for us, a book of memo- ries to be enjoyed for years to come, and a re- minder that hard work brings worthwhile results. 63 x 1 if EW REAL , K 1 Stuclviits in our school we-i'c kc-pt uwalw of the- lute-st lmppviiiiiqs hy mcuiis of our school pupm-r. tha- N1-wsrc-al. VAR ITY FOOTB LL As we review the Bearcats' 1958 football season. we find that it was not one of our most successful. The end of the gridiron tour showed a record of four wins and six defeats. Under the fine coaching of Nlr. NVQ-aver and his assistants. Coaches XlcDowell. Scott, and jackson. the 'Cats played some heart-hreaking games and lost some really hard-fought contests. However, they were unahle to hit the win column consistently. Huntingdonis first gridiron appearance re- sulted in a thrilling 13-0 victory over Morris Township. The ,Cats were green in this game hut showed that they were not going to allow this to stop them. Swan scored on a beautiful 50-yard run, and Fagan made the extra point. In the third period Snare ran 56 yards to the one- yard line and Frank Day took it over from there for the final TD. In the second outing of the season the Bear- cats were stopped hy Captain jack in an exciting 19-T game. The ,Cats drove 71 yards in eleven plays during the first period. with Jack Xlorning- star scoring from the 4-yard line. Don Purdy split the uprights and Huntingdon led T-0.
