Class History FRESHMAN YEAR Listen my children and you shall hear Tales of the '53 Freshman Year The time was early Autumn, the year, nineteen-forty-nine, The freshies came to take their places, each one looking fine. From the public school, Saint Mary's, Ferdinand and Duff, Each one eager to show the others that he knew his stuff. Seventy-three green freshies, some of them from farms, Came anxiously to school that day, their books within their arms. You mean our home roomls way upstairs? Where's the elevator?' I brought my pennies for the ride, they told me that l'd better! Mr. Pellett and Mr. Fisher, who were their sponsors two, Helped them get acquainted, and gave them some friendly clues. Soon afterwards the freshies chose Max as their 'gbig wheel, A girl named Jessie Ahrens as Veep they did reveal, A girl called Agnes Blessinger to make the documents, A fellow named Merle Lehman to take in the dollars and cents. For biology, bugs they caught, and leaves they did collect, The leaves they named, the bugs they named, and starfish did dissect. The home ec. class, on Armistice Day, served up peanuts and punch, For Mrs. Little, and for their mothers, they served this little lunch. In cold December all the freshies had a hill-billy party, At the cost of fifteen-ninety-four everyone ate hearty. In basketball and football, the freshman boys were good, Experience gained in early years makes victory a likelihood. They had two yell leaders, some musicians, and a majorette, But the band got second in marching, we think that judge was all wet! SOPHOMORE YEAR Now listen my children and you shall hear Tales of the '53 sophomore year. 'Twas in the year of nineteen-fifty early in September. When in waltzed sixty-five nifty sophomore members, Who were led and guided ahead very carefully By the sponsor Fell and the sponsor Stansbury. Jessie Ahrens and Max Olinger were held over by request, And as Veep and President again did their very best. Betty Leland was voted to be the secretary, And Bob Heidorn had charge of all the monetary. Some sophomores were soon seen joining the Hi-Y and Y-Teens. And served when the Jr. reception had a jungle scheme. Now this class of '53 had both brains and brawn we see, Baseball-basketballand-student manager sums up the totality, In basketball the 2nd team was keen and on the beam, ln baseball their brawn helped win the SIAC cream.

I JUNIOR YEAR Now listen my children and you shall hear The tales of the ,53 .lunior Year. 'Twas the Fall of '51 when all 65 begun, Sponsors Tucker and Ritchey helped them in unison. Once again the majority voted for our Maxie, And a guy named Merle Lehman was voted as his proxy. Elizabeth Hemmerlein as secretary was assigned, Bob Heidorn, again as treasurer, his duties did not mind. The time has come, the Juniors said, to talk of many things: Class play, new gym, reception, sweaters, jackets, and rings. The class play was entitled We Shook the Family Tree, Tucker's cherubs sold the most tickets so they got a party free. As actresses and actors the Juniors were supreme, And the new gym turned into a beautiful-long-fulfilled dream. For rings of gold, sweaters of red and jackets red and black, Each one with an old English H, their pockets they did ransack. Junior musicians helped the marching band win first division, Mr. Fulk and Bert were very happy with this decision. All-in-all reception time was something to behold, The theme they had was, Dream Landf, The decorations were silver and gold. SENIOR YEAR Now you lads and lassies gather around and you shall hear Tales of the Class of '53 in their mighty Senior Year. The year was nineteen-fifty-two and the Class of '53 Came to school in early Autumn and looked pathetically At all the little underclassmen who yelled and ran around Not knowing or not caring they too would soon be outward-bound. These seniors, for the fourth straight year, chose Maxie as their man, And Pinky Powell, the ball of fire, as parliamentarian. Bob Heidorn was elected treasurer for his third straight term, And Liz Hemmerlein as secretary the seniors did affirm. The members of the class this year totaled sixty-nine, Short were the two who came from below the Mason-Dixon Line. The sponsors of the Senior Class helped make the last year fun, Their names were Miss McFadden and Mr. Richardson. The song they heard at football time was Hail the Happy Hunters, This team had blockers, runners, passers, and the best of all the punters A record of five and two and one is good for any team, But this record in H.H.S. makes this year's team supreme, The marching band at Salem was cheated out of first, They'll try again next year and make it, or they'll burst. Now this tale of the '53 class could go on and on, And tell of glories lost or could tell of glories won. But if this tale of the '53 class is any indication, Come joy or sorrow, win or lose, depression or inflation, We'll stick it out and when we get the prize of victory, They'll ask Why? and we'll say, Why, we're the Class of '53!
