H. S. Brother Goose. given November 5, brought to light much dramatic talent. The gold secured from this production enabled them to open a Silver Slipper to entertain the Forty-Niners this spring. For another diversion, blue-jean clad luniors gathered at the school, Novem- ber 23, for a Sadie Hawkins, party, featuring a search for a hidden treasure. Managing the luniors in these activities were Mr. Tucker and Mr. Hardie. Certainly they were successful guides, for the class of '50 was well represented in every school activity. Seeking pleasure along the way, early last fall they encarnped in the upper hall for a round of old fashioned games and dances. Hll sorts of devices had to be used by Mr. Wilson and Miss Padgett in head- ing off their rascally maneuvers. However, they corralled them well enough so that they were able to excell in athletics and assume duties in all the school's clubs. S. the best outfit rollin' along the activity trail, we have the Student Council. Organized only a year ago, it has found the uncharted route sometimes diffi- cult. However, under Captain lohn lNallis, assisted by officers lack Lukemeyer and Pat Freson, and with Mr. Loehr as commander-in-chief, several successful diggings have been reported. With the help of Mr. Wicker, a faculty advisor, outside talent was contracted for the convos. The students thoroughly enjoyed the Deep River Boys, the Vagabond Trio, and the Wade Quartette. Next year's acts, which have already been booked, promise to be even more entertaining. , Not entirely relinquishing their booster club activities, the council co-spon- sored the football queen crowning and worked with the Hi-Y and Y-Teens on a sportsmanship campaign. Major venture of the year was the publication of an Educational Guidance Manual. This handbook, drawn up by Mr. Wicker and revised by the faculty and student representatives, well maps out the way for students entering Hunt- ingburg High School. . With militant airs, they led the Memorial Day parade, with their clowns ing maneuvers, they began the IayCee Halloween masquerade: and for the de- light of the thousands who attended the Dubois County Fair, they presented popular number concerts. These entertainers, complying with re- quests from surrounding communities, performed for the Limestone Centennial at Bedford, the music festival at Mt. ' Coach Richardson Cheering us on to victory were Pat Souders Bob Klee Gloria Bretz Backiield - Wes Leiberinqg Tom Lamkin, Ken Moenkhaus, and Captain Randy Emerson. THE HUNTERS LOSE SEASGN'S CPENERS TO BICKNELL-BOONVILLE Bicknell--Sept. 10 Bicknell's Bulldogs swamped Huntingburg 40-6 in the opening SIAC game for both teams. A couple of speedy scat-backs, Kotlarsky and Zeller, proved too much for the Hunters as they romped to four and two touchdowns re- spectively. Captain Emerson placed the Hunters in the scoring column with a quarterback sneak in the last period. Sophomore fullback, Howard McLaughlin, playing his first game of varsity ball, amassed a total of 50 yards for ground gaining honors. Boonville--Sept. 17 An inspired Hunter eleven put up a game battle before succumbing to the highly favored Pioneers, 26-20, in the Boonville bowl. Dick Zieg was the prime mover in the Pio- neer victory. The versatile right halfback crashed the Hunter defense for three touch- downs and continuously racked up first downs for the vict-ors. But Emerson to Stetter passes and Lieber- ing's running kept Huntingburg in the game. Randy uncorked aerials to Stetter to account for two touchdowns and crept through the Boonville defense from the one yard line for the third. Wes Leibering reeled oH a 45-yard run for one of the Red and Black's longer gains. The gun sounded with the Hunters marching toward the Pioneers' goal line. HUNTERS OVERPOWER STONECUTTERS, 26-6 Huntingburg-Oct. 1 At home for the second straight Friday, the Happy Hunters rolled over Bedford for their first win of the season. . Exhibiting the power displayed in the Boon- ville contest, they scored in every quarter to subdue the Cutters, 26-6. Bill Stetter fielded two of Emerson's bu1l's eye tosses for counters, and Moenkhaus latched on to another for a 45-yard jaunta to pay dirt. Leibering's touch- down came on an end sweep that covered 33 yards and six points. Bedford's marker touched off a 70-yard DUGGER CRUSHES HUNTERS, 26-O Huntingburg-Sept. 24 Firing passes through a bewildered Hunter secondary with deadly accuracy, the Bulldogs of Dugger administered a 26-0 defeat to the Beersmen in their own dust bowl. A heave from Brewster to Hall accounted for the lone touchdown in the first half. Ar- nold on an interception tallied another six pointer in the third quarter. A 37-yard end run by Cornelius and a Hall to Arnold pass completed the scoring for Dugger.. Dnnflv Flwunv-ann Starling Eleven PRINCETON ROMPS TO 38-O VICTORY Huntingburg-Oct. 8 Manned by fleet-footed Dick McGowan, the Princeton Tigers showed Huntingburg some power football as they smothered the Red- Black, 38-0, on the home gridiron. McGowan pitched his first strike to Parker in the second quarter. The next time the Tigers got the ball, he repeated his perform- ance with an aerial to Summers for the six pointer. Then traveling overland, he person- ally garnered two more touchdowns. The final touchdowns were scored by Summers and Parker through some neat hocus-pocus in the backfield. Unable to penetrate the strong Tiger de- fense, quarterback Randy Emerson took to the airways only to have the overhead attack bog down on the seven-yard line. Seniors ARTESIANS FALL TO HUNTER ASSAULT Martinsville-Oct. 15 After a long journey to Martinsville the Hunters rebounded from the Princeton slaugh- ter to rout the hapless Artesians, 20-7. Three combinations of numbers-17, 77, 71- ran all over the field, passing, catching, and kicking, and accounted for every Huntingburg point. Emerson passed, Stetter and Murray received, and Stetter did all the extra point kicking. The Art-esians only score came on a nice pass-lateral late in the third quarter. Tom Lamkin hit the line for 88 yards to head that department. HUNTERS RUN OVER BLUEIACKETS, 45-O Huntingburg-Oct. 19 Performing in royal style before their new- ly-crowned Football Queen, the Huntingburg Hunters shut out the Mitchell Bluejackets 45-0, at the Municipal Park. The Red and Black was a starless combina- tion. Emerson and Lamkin each accounted for 2 T. D.'s apiece, and Leibering, Moenkhaus, and McLaughlin each added a single tally. The longest run of the evening was Emerson's 62 yard sprint on a fake hand-off. In displaying their most aggressive play of the season, the Hunters racked up a total of 372 yards, most of them on the ground. Emerson led individual ground gainers with a 125-yard total. HATCHETS GAIN 14-6 WIN OVER HUNTERS IN FINAL TILT Washington-Oct. 26 The Washington Hatchets scored in the ini- tial and final frames to edge the Hunters 14-6. Outweighed by a tough Hatchet line, the Beersmen had to resort to the air route to chalk up their only tally. After a pass from Foster to Riney for the Gold and Black's first counter, the Hunters twice marched to within their opponents 10- yard line, only to lose the ball on downs. Early in the fourth period, however, Logsdon snatched a long Emerson aerial for the Hunt- er's six points. Stetter's kick was blocked. Washington soon retaliated as Foster circled end for a T. D. which cinched the game for the Hatchets. Hunters Complete Most Successful Season Since Their Return to the Gridiron in '43 Won 3, lost 5-that's the Hunters' record for '48, Although unimpressivc to the ordinary reader, to the students of Huntingburg High it means their best team since their return to football five years ago. Their worst losses came at the hands of teams rated tops in their S.I.A.C. division. With Boonville and Washington, long powcrs on the gridiron, they played on almost even terms, and to Bedford, Martinsville, and Mitchell, teams new in handling the pigskin, they proved they were a neat passing, hard hitting aggregation. Performing for the '48 production were Emerson, Lamkin, Partenheimer, Stetter, Murray, St. Angelo, Lehman, Moenkhaus, Wallis, Leibering, Heitz, Hartke, McLaughlin, Logsdon, Lukemeyer, and Gunselman. HHPPY HUNTERS CONFERENCE CHHMPS Skip Lehman l-luntinqburq's caqers have again in '49 claim- ed the title of Happy Ones. For the first time in their history they have Won the Southern Indiana Plthletic Conference championship. The seasons campaign resulted in nineteen victories aqainst four defeats. When any team has racked up such a record, there're people behind the story. These men were Coach fini Beers and Plssistant Coach Richardson. ln looking over a championship record, interest naturally centers on the players. First there was Captain Torn Smith. Because of his play in the pivot spot and his rebound Work, he was chosen as center on the S. I. H. C. Hll-Con- ference team as well as Hll-State forward in the Louisville Courier Iournal Bob Wagoner Ken Moenkhaus Bill Stetter hm Lemond as 4 vi ' at 'Q , Ah 1 x t 1' 4 Tom Smith coaches' poll. Ken Moenkhaus, one of the trickiest scorers in high school basketball today, likewise was selected for the S. l. H. C.'s first five. The teams's most consistent player was Bob Wag- oner. Tops defensively, he could also rip the nets for two pointers when need- ed. Completing the first five were two fine ball handlers-tip-in artist Bill Stet- ter and that heady, steady performer, lim Lemond, The Hunters' reserve strength was at its best with such play- ers as Randy Emerson, Don Sakel, and Bill Klee. Rnd now a review of the season. The Warm-up game with Mitchell, Randy Emerson Bill Klee November l2, satisfied Hunter fans that this year's team was to be a power in Southern Indiana as they easily trounced the Blueiaclcets, 45-20. Returning from Washington the fol- lowing week with another quarter-cen- tury victory margin, 54-29, they became a much discussed quintet. Hfter rambling over Paoli, 48-36, the Hunters passed their first big test by beating the Iasper Wildcats, 42-39. Moenkhaus's twenty--six points chalk- ed up in the Princeton game aided the Hunters in blasting the Tigers, 72-34. Notching victories over Petersburg, Don Sch! 62-42, Bedford, 44-42, and Bosse, 46-40, the Hunters, 48 record was perfect with eight victories and no defeats. Ianuary l, and the Hunters were at feffersonville for an invitational tourney. By coasting over a weak Southport five, 46-28, the Hunters earned the right to meet Ieff in the night-cap. The Red Devils, consistently finding the mark in the third quarter, staved off the Beers- men's late rally and eked out a 48-47 win. Rebounding from the leffersonville de- feat the Red and Black scored a con- vincing 66-50, win over Beitz of Evans- ville. The following Friday New Pllbany marred the Hunters' regular season record with a 49-42 victory and handed them their only S. I. H. C. loss. Making it four out of four over lasper, the local five tripped the Wildcats again by a three point margin, 53-50. The next three games featured three different high scoring stars. Smith tal- lied 23 points as the Hunters rolled over Bicknell, 73-53. Bill Stetter with l8 points Bill gets the ball then took the limelight in their 61-59 win over the Vincennes Hlices. The fol- lowing Friday Sullivan out scored Moenkhaus, 34-28, but fell before the Hunter onslaught, 72-34. Tell City, who scored a surprise vic- tory over the Hunters last year, again turned the trick, 55-47, to hand them their worst defeat of the season. To cinch the S. I. H. C. title, the Hunt- ers outlasted Central of Evansville 57-52. Ken Moenkhaus scored 20 points. In the remaining games the Red and Black edged Boonville, 48-46, and romp- ed over French Lick, 69-41. Picked by most sports writers as the Iasper sectional favorite, the Hunters lived up to predictions in the first two games, defeating Otwell, 47-28, and squeezing past Spurgeon, 40-39. ln the Saturday afternoon semi-final, the fasper Wildcats showed a reversal in their sea- son form in disposing of the Beersmen, 44-35, and Went on to win the sectional, regional and semi-final titles. Despite the tourney, it was a banner year in basketball for Huntingburg. Con- gratulations to a fine team! j Ken sinks a gratis toss GOLDEN FUTURE Not to be outdone by the Hunter varsity, Coach Kenny Richardson's Reserves chalked up an im- pressive record ot their own with l2 Wins and 6 losses. These seconds provided the fans many fast and thrilling games in their 7:00 p. m. prelimi- naries. The starting line-up was shifted continu- ally, as a number of the boys played substitute roles on the varsity. Lukemeyer, McLaughlin, O'Brien, Klee, and Sakel usually gained the nod on starting assignments. The golden year also brought to us one of H. H. S.'s finest grade quintets. Under the direction of Hugo Leonard, the grade team scored 23 wins while dropping only 7. Powell, Smith, Warren, Heidorn, Reese, and Cronin were used most tre- quently in the starting line-up. What! No S. I. . . Title For the first time in four years Hunter dominance over S.I.Fl.C. baseball compe- tition was broken. Coach Ray Katter was blessed with plenty of power at the plate, but the pitching and fielding was too inconsistent for a championship team. In the opening game the Hunters were soundly trounced by Central of Evansville, ll-2. They showed a complete reversal in form in Winning their next three games, two from Boonville and one from 'VVashington, by the overwhelming scores of 12-3, 9-2, and 21-7. Engaging their bitter rival Iasper in a slugfest, they came out on the short end of a 9-8 count. On the road again, the Hunters came through with a 7-5 verdict over Washington. Playing at Bosse Field, the local nine was tripped by the Reitz Panthers, 3-2. Twice they met defeat at the hands of Princeton's S.l.H.C. champs before recovering with a victory over the Bosse Bulldogs. Four days later they again succumbed to the Iasper attack. In the final game with the Reitz Panthers, Sophomore Bob Kunz hurled a masterful no-hit, no-run game to give the Hunters an even break with six wins and six losses. with Kenny Richardson lies the task of re-establishing the Hunters as a power in the S.l.H.C. Pls only two lettermen, Bob Wagoner and Randall Emerson, remain from last year's squad, the '49 diamond aggregation must be composed of inexperienced underclassmen. Hll, however, are enthusiastic baseball aspirants with potential ability both at the plate and in the field. With some hard pre-season work, they should round out into a smooth working combination. 45 GIRLS ATHLETIC ASSGCIATION The G. H. H. offers to all girls who are sport enthusiasts plenty of opportunity to exhibit their prowess. Meeting each Monday and Friday after school, they vie among themselves for honors in volley ball, basketball, deck tennis, baseball, and badminton. This year the luniors were acclaimed the victors in the volley ball tournament, while the Sophs proudly wore the blue ribbons for basketball. Ioining the G. H. H. caravan early this fall were a large group of seventh graders and freshmen, along with a smattering of upper classmen. In typical rough initiation riggings, the initiates appeared at school one morning clad in blue jeans. Slung over their shoulders were skillets. They carried, too, the usual supply of candy for those ravaging council members-Ioyce Lewis, Clesta Winkler, Ruth Utz, Ioy Hilsmeier, Ieanette Pfaff, Helen Snyder, and Wanda Hall. Hlso initiated into G. H. H. this year were two new sponsors. Miss Padgett, now Mrs. DeBaun, was in charge the first semester, and Miss Stansbury took over the cap- taincy the second semester. Using the camp made for the Iunior Prom, they held their '49 round-up the night after the reception. Mothers and seniors were special guests at this award banquet. 46 41' 'Q 1 ,ff ,. Q2w,,,.fp, ..
