PAUL TERRELL Supervising Principal High School Principal The word school today means much more than just book larnin, and our concept of schoo administration today embraces many more aspects of school activities than it formerly did. Changing Times indeed have brought about numerous changes in our schools. School today means academic Ieaming, citizenship training, educational, moral, spiritual, and vocational guidance, athletic programs, clubs, parties and dances, physical and mental health, and a host of things too numerous to mention--all of the experiences that being a part of a school brings The administration of a school has become a growing task that must concem itself with all of these activities. Their complexities as well as increased enrollments have called for more personnel in the area of administration, and in our own particular case we are experiencing o first year here in the Eel River - Perry Schools with two licensed administrators. We shall undoubtedly experience growing pains in our new administrative setup, but the f co-operation of all concerned will certainly enable us to provide a better service to students the community. Our goal is better schools and greater educational opportunity for all of the f young people in the community we serve. MR. LAWRENCE FOOTE MR. Harold Schafer served as president, Larry Smith as vice-president, secretary was Charlotte Slofter and Sandy Maxwell was treasurer. This year, for the first time, the class ordered their rings which they will receive when they are iuniors. In previous years this has been done at the beginning ofthe iunior year, which causes quite a delay. This will probably be a custom to be continued in future years. A field trip to Chicago was also a high-point ofthe sophomore year. There they visited the Museum of Natural History, the Museum of Science and lndustry and the Aquarium. Besides the power woodworking tools, we have added sheet metal work, on a hand scale, and cement and electrical equipment for the general shop. GLENN GE Social Studies and Business Eilusatinn The study of history meets a need in the schools just as every particular subject. History can be studied just for enjoyment, too. It is taught to keep us from making the same mistakes in the future that have been made in the past. A person will guard his rights and shoulder his responsibilities if he appreciates what others have done so he might enjoy the freedoms of today. Our changing social order has changed many of our teaching procedures in soci- ology. Young people need to learn to analyze the problems of society in terms of how they affect human beings, remembering always that society is made up of flesh and blood, men, women, and children. Preparing young people for well-informed partici- pation in public affairs has been kept in the forefront. WILLIS ROBERTS MR. DONALD l l l NEOMI MANCE MRS. The school has long attempted to educate the whole child. The physical side ofthe child, and his health, assumes a tremendous importance in this total program. Through gymnastics, games, and other recreational activities, each child finds he can develop physically and receive mental stimulus as well as develop his capacities as a leader. Health classes attempt to give knowledge to the student that will help him to be a healthier person. This combination of health and physical education should develop happier, better adjusted people. l l ff' L I, J T Q M A f 4 l :J f fx ' SV f rf-. N w, '- 1 .L . . - S- . Y T:-.af 56 Mr . Because there was not enough volume to warrant the expense, the staff decided to go back to mimeographed paper four years ago. One of the highlights of the last two years had been the trip to Franklin College, to attend the Indiana High School Press Conference. All the staff members gather many new ideas from the conference. This year's staff published a special Christmas issue with the proceeds going to Care. It was felt that the sphere of influence of the paper should extend beyond H.H.S. SENHIIR PLAY- Il0WN T0 HART Down to Earth is the story of two angels, Agnes ancl Wilfred and a kind of heavenly hitch-hiker, Pilone, who come down to earth to influence the romances, finances, and fates of Augusta Applegate, her relatives, her maid, and her neighbor, Herman Howell. The story is further complicated by her relatives, Orpha, Ruthie, Millie, Baxter, and June, who are more interested in Augusta's money. Adding a bit of romance to the story are Richard, who is trying to get a camera shop started, and Robert, a rich hypochondriac. Through the play the two angels are trying to get Augusta and Herman reconciled to leave earth and go to heaven with them. They finally succeed in getting two persons, but not the two they expected. At the close of the play Pilone turns into a full-fledged angel, after Diana gets hit by a car, thus preparing them for their journey to heaven with Agnes and Wilfred. THE CAST Agnes . . . The Wildcats of T956-57 did not enjoy a tremendously successful season, but they showed a lot of promise with a young ball club. They played hard, fast, clean ball to wind up with six won fourteen lost record, which was good enough for fourth place in the newly formed Allen County Conference. Their victims included such teams as Rome City, Churubusco, Leo Arcola, Waterloo, and Woodburn. Overtime games were lost to Harlan and Monroeville. contests were played with such powerhouses as Central Catholic, Albion, Elmhurst, and Avill Forming the nucleus of this team were juniors and sophomores which indicates a promising future for our teams. Injuries played an important part in the past campaign as key players slowed clown in several contests. A thrilling victory was won over Leo in their gym to highlight the season. It was one of the three losses suffered by the County Champs. Although the boys were somewhat handicapped in size and experience, this was over: by their speed, scrap, and spirit. Bob Blanchard, Pete Tom, and Ross Gross were brought u from the second team to go along with Eldon Dice, Bill Archer, Dave Bockman, and Ron Fiedler to give us experience for next year's varsity. lt was a great season which came to a close for four seniors,-Jack Witham, Lynn Bosler Larry Gump, and Ron Dicke. X 1 i L E w t T . l FIRST GRADE SECOND GRADE Mrs. Bernice Dunten, Mrs. MVS- lca GP m0nr MVS- MQW Nellie Simon, and Miss Anna Ann l-Clmlef and MTS- Hilda F001-e Sauder . Times certainly have changed in elementary schools since the Class of '57 entered first grade back in l945. Enrollments have practically doubled in most grades and the increased enrollment has brought about the most obvious change - the new building which houses twelve of the sixteen elementary classrooms. These bright and cheerful classrooms of today are in marked contrast to the rather dark, dreary, and drab room fom1erly used. Everything about the new rooms - the pastel colors,-adequate lighting, greater size, moveable furniture, storage space, plumbing, electrical outlets, bulletin and blackboard space, clothes closets - yes, everything points to better enioyment and greater learning opportunities for young children. Q Teachers point out other changes and improvements besides those in the physical school plant. A greater abundance of instructional materials and equipment has enhanced the educational experiences of the elementary ichildren of today. Such items as records and record players, strip films, movies, a tape recorder, maps, globes, art and other supplies have augmented the textbook and the work of the teacher. The extensive library service and instruction, now an integral partofthe elementary program .glong with the tremendous supply of supplementary readers available, has played an important role in the enrichment of the school curriculm. As time goes on, more improvements are to be exptected. Just this year, efforts H are being made to begin a more adequate testing program for the lower grades to serve as a basis for good, sound group and individual guidance. Students strengths and weaknesses are to be studied to allow teachers to adjust their work to pupil needs and abilities. If possible, greater emphasis will be placed on individual development and progress. As always, however, the individual teacher will remain to be the vital spark or ignition for the machinery that turns out America's most important product - the youth of tomorrow. ,, T ,iv it 1: , t V A A.. :Q - J ll ' 'Ferl THIRD GRADE Mrs. Evelyn Gardner, and Mrs. Gladys OH'o FIFTH GRADE FOURTH GRADE Mrs. Ruby Hoover, Mrs. Mary Hatch, and Mrs. Gretchen Yoder ,+'T lin . .-I I ii-f 6 rr .', 4 , I ' J, !..1 SIXTH GRADE Mrs. Frances Wise, Mrs. Mary ' 98 Mrs, Lela Dunfen and Longfellow, and Miss Joann Allison - Mr, William Wise T ,,, L T wt spit? -as , I 'U ,-Lb rl' ll 11' gghf V-1 lv'-Ll 'pi 11,5 if W V 1 .r v MRS.
