Dick Gordon came later during this year. On the second step, no additions were made to the beginning group. The third step brought Paul McDaniel to the happy little group, and the fourth step added Patty Burton and John Myers. Peggy Deetz and Wanda Knafel joined the group on the fifth step, followed by Charles Abbott and Shirley and Richard Heffelfinger on the sixth step. Thus the class was increased to twenty-eight members. Jim Blessing and Johnny Womack were taken in on the seventh and eighth steps. The climax of our first eight steps was the receiving of diplomas by the junior high grads. Tired by eight years of toil in reading, writing, and arithmetic, we trudged ever onward. Those who had climbed the preceding eight steps at Huntertown were joined by those who had climbed their first eight steps elsewhere: they were: Alice Boroff, Clarence Bauer, Margaret Couture. Beverly DeWitt. Bob Englehart, Elaine Farmer, Alvin Fritz, Richard Haire, Robert Hall, Kent Keener. Charles Kell, Bill Kovets, Betty Lincoln, Terry Meyers, Marjorie Pepple, Loretta Sickafus, Charles Taner, and Larry Timmis. Paul Brown again joined us after a two-year leave of absence. We elected as our officers, Jim Blessing-president, Paul Brown-vice-president, and Peggy Deetz-secretary and treasurer. Our sponsors were Mrs. Hostetler and Mr. Fryback. Darwyn Herbst and Allen Leatherman were added on the tenth step. Marvin Martin led the class as president, Gorgean Fox was secretary, and Dick Gordon, treasurer. with Mrs. Palicki and Mr. Appleman as sponsors. On the eleventh step. we added Mary Ann Cushing. The officers elected were: Al Leatherman-president, Kent Keener-vice-president, Lois Fryback-secretary, Pat Noble-treasurer. The class presented a play entitled, The Professor Proposes, under the direction of Miss Enley. It proved to be a success. The juniors sold concessions at the ballgames to raise money for the prom. The theme of the prom, given to honor the seniors, was Moonlight and Roses. It was held at the Van Orman Hotel. Our sponsors were Miss Enley and Mr. Sible. The twelfth step found Clarence Peters the only addition. This made fifty-five students to look forward to diplomas in May. The class elected Lois Fryback- president, Johnny Womack-vice-president, Peggy Deetz-secretary, and Richard Gordon-treasurer. The sponsors were Mr. Prible and Mr. Koepsell. Pu ge 23 66444 ?fwp4eay On May 13, 2050, we enter the hangar at the Huntertown airport, which is owned by Paul Brown. Our pilot, Noel Fitch, is ready to go. We climb into our atoiggc-powered plane, and soon we are flying through space at a high rate of spe . After a while we find we are hungry, and our stewardess, Mary Ann Cushing, brings in a tray full of potato pills, chicken pills, corn pills, bread pills, lettuce pill, and Lincoln's Little Liver Pills. With these we have a cup of coffee. Our first stop is in New York City, a suburb of Huntertown. While we are viewing the sights, our guide is Richard Gordon. He first takes us to the Empire State Building, which is owned by Marjorie Pepple. The famous band leader, Gorgean Fox, and her band are the featured attraction. Among the members we find two of our old school chums, Charles Abbott and Loretta Sickafus. The vocal- ist is none other than the great contralto, Marie Smith. ' We haven't time to waste, so We climb into our fplane and soon we are off to Washington, D.C. As we enter, we are greeted by the President, Dick Sordelet, and his First Lady, Margie Felger. They take us into the White House, and we see as a janitor, Darwyn Herbst. The First Lady calls for tea, and Ann Gump, the Second Lady, brings it in. You see Dick still canit settle down to one. It is now time to continue on our way. Our next stop is London, England. As we walk up to a t'Bobby to ask directions, we find it is the great detective, Larry Sherlock Holmes Timmis. He invites us to his home to see his wife, Elaine Farm- er, and their two children. We join their family and continue on to Picadilly Circus. Here we find Madame Peggy Fifi Deetz, the famous fortune teller. She tells us that Douglas Bauman will soon inherit the small estate, Buckingham Palace, and the beautiful maids, including the charming Wanda Knafel. After browsing around we decide to row across the English Channel to France. On our way we come upon the great swimming champion, Charles Kell, who is tangling with the Great White Whale. We rescue him and take him with us to Paris. While wandering down the streets, we see a familiar face. To our surprise, we find Pat Burton, who now owns the Roberta Fashion Shop She asks us to come in and enjoy the latest fashion show which is now in progress. Upon entering we find the two famous models, Lois Fryback and Beverly DeWitt, who are modeling the latest French bathing suits which were designed by Bill Kovets. From Paris we journey on to Madrid, Spain. Here we find the great Romeo, Robert Hall, making love to his Juliet, Shirley Heffelfinger. As we leave Spain, we proceed to Africa. While crossing the Sahara Desert, we see a mirage. It is someone drilling for water. As We near, we find it is not a mirage. It is another school chum, Richard Haire. He has been stranded for three weeks without Water. We take him with us to Moscow, Russia, which is our next stop. The great dictator, Terry Meyers, welcomes us with his army, led by the fearless warrior, Margaret Couture. She is commanding Jim Blessing to send back the army because we 'are her friends. We must hurry because we are due at Hong Kong, China, in five minutes. We have already reserved a table at Clarence Bauer's famous Oriental Restaurant. Our meal consists of rice, which must be eaten with Edith Aikins' newly invented chopsticks. After an unsuccessful try with them, we leave the restaurant to go to Japan, whose present conqueror is Carl Easterday. His beautiful princess is Shirley Felger. We don't like their hospitality, so we leave and go to Hawaii where we see the splendid dancing team, Marvin Martin and Joyce Ott, doing a hula dance on the Continued on Page 62 Page 24 .Q Q I N x,' I ax ,L V5 V 'hifi is 511 fnfgigv EEG :ff 'H , -f X ' J ' I I , 1 : Q I h i I L A U 4 B 5 - -, x Y li dwfdf- x ' President .... HHS e 4? '5 7' V I1 5x SWEATER AWARDS BAND OFFICERS TWIHLERS ganna! The Huntertown High School Band has played at its best and won itself praise this past year as it has in previous years. Its first summons to the call of duty was its participation in the Auburn Street Fair. This was followed by the Huntertown Fair, in September, and the P.T.A. Halloween Festival, October 31. The Farmer's Institute was entertained with a 15-minute program on January 28. The band took part in the Annual Festival at New Haven, on March 28, and put on a brilliant performance. On February 13, it gave a concert accompanied by the Chorus. The band has given good moral support and has pepped up the students at the numerous basketball games, not to mention the County Tournament. Several members of the band have gained recognition for themselves in several solo and ensemble contests held in this vicinity. Two participants went to the state contest on Feb- ruary 21. They were Walter Pranger, trombone, and Lynn Hyndman, cornet. Several members took part in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest held at North Side, of Fort Wayne, and Harrison Hill Grade School on February 7. The instru- ments included in the solo class were clarinet, cornet, trom- bone, and a baritone. In the ensemble class there were the brass, saxophone, and clarinet quartets. Mr. Sloffer, the conductor, said the band would enter the Organization Contest on April 11. He has entered it in previous years and has had some success with it. New types of instru- ments have not been added this year, but there have been several additions to specific sections such as the clar- inets. As the year draws to a close, the band will participate in its last musicale at the Com- mencement exercises. 664 The chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Grace Drummond, sang at the County Teacher's Institute, the Thanksgiving program, Farmers Institute, Christmas Con- cert, Band and Chorus Concert, Exchange Concert, and the Baccalaureate exer- cises. The chorus also sang in the Allen County Chorus Festival, which is an annual affair held at Huntertown. A guest conductor is hired for this special occasion. This year the conductor was William DeMaria from Detroit. The choirs from all of the county schools come to sing in one mass choir. Each choir does a number by itself. The Huntertown Choir sang Go Way From My Window and Comin' Thru the Rye, two of its favorites. In the vocal part of our Music department, there is a girls' ensemble, consisting of six girls. There is also a Sophomore trio, consisting of Janet Douglas, Yvonne Buckles, and Pat Gooding. The trio participated in the district music contest in Fort Wayne and received an excellent rating. Two mem- bers of the chorus brought honors back to H.H.S. from the district and state contests. Lynn Hyndman placed first in both contests. Margaret Couture received a first place in the district and a second place in the state contest. The Madrigal group, composed of six- teen of the chorus members, presented a small concert at the Fort Wayne Art Museum. Following this concert, the group joined the rest of the chorus in a Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Drummond. The entire group then went Christmas caroling. Proceeds from the Christmas C o n c e r t, and the Band-Choru: Concert was used to apply toward a set of risers for concert use. CHORUS OFFICERS lllrfs, Drummond 0 IF M. Couture. M. J tlin-im. Chapter Meeting Contest, Essay Contest, and Public Speaking and Judging Contests. Richard Gordon won the district and sectional contest for Public Speak- ing, and he competed in the finals at Purdue with three other sectional winners. The essay and chapter meeting teams won the right to compete in the finals at Purdue on April 2, 3, and 4. The chapter sold garden seeds this year to raise money for the treasury. A purebred gilt ring was also started. This year the members had four Hoosier Farmer candidates, who are hoping to make their degrees. This is the first year the chapter has published a newspaper. It was called THE SCOOP. The chapter was proud of the fact that it had an F.F.A. band and quartet. This Page Sponsored by-Walt's Ignition Service Page 46 First Row: P. Noble, J. Myers, B. DeWitt, D. Among the changes was the use of 10-point printing instead of the usual 8-point, which the paper has had for a number of years. The new type of printing aided the reading of the paper. Another change was the paper on which it was printed. Book paper was used instead of newsprint. Along with these changes came the use of the gold banner lines at the top and the bottom of the front page. We have tried to add to the interest of the school paper by putting more pic- tures, not only on the front page, but throughout the paper. The purpose of our school paper was. To Disseminate News of Interest to Friends of Eel River-Perry School, to Foster Fellowship Among Students, and to Promote Good Student-Faculty Relationship. One of the highlights of the year for the Flash staff was the announcement by the Freedoms Foundation, of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. that Terry Mcjfers' edi- torial, Speak up for Freedom had won a 3100.00 prize and the George Washington Honor Medal. These words bring a picture of a real 0 man to the minds of the students at H.H.S. and a feeling of pride to their hearts. Coach Coonan has always been interested in various sports and, while in Newburgh High School, he took an active part in them. It was then that he definitely decided to become a coach. Terry is still carrying the effects of that injury. He became even better acquainted with athletics by being a park supervisor in Newburgh. his home town, during summer vacations. In 19-12. Terry Coonan interrupted his studies to become a member of the United States Coast Guard. He saw duty in the Pacific theater of war and was a radio operator aboard and L.S.T. Terry received his discharge in 1943, and in the same year he was married. He then went back to Indiana University to resume his studies and receive h.s B.S. degree. He stayed on the campus an additional year in order to get his M.S. degree. Dur- ing this year he taught athletic activity courses to freshmen in the university. Terry Coonan, fresh out of college, came to Fort Wayne and began working in the physical educat.on field of the Fort Wayne Park Board. Then in the fall of 1948 Coach Coonan became a member of the H.H.S. faculty. In the four years that he has been at Hunter- town. Terry has been very busy.d Allong vgith cciaclaing all basket- I ball, baseball, track, softball, an ot er p ysica e ucation activi- ties. he teaches history, health and safety. TERRY COQNAN To fill up his already busy schedule, Mr. Coonan is a member of the Teachers Bowling League, his favorite pastime. As a coach. Terry is grand. He takes ta keen interest in the physical education of the boys. Coach Coonan Came to Huntertown When the Seniors of 1953 were just ending their grade School years, The boys who are now playing first string basketball were then young and inexperienced. Terry has enjoyed watch- ing them blossom out into fine basketball D13y9I'S- Coach Coonan has spent many evenings in the gym- nasium instructing them on the fundamentals of basketball. As a man, it would be hard to beat Terry Coonan. During and after school hours, he is always a friend of the students and he talks to them about their different problems. He is very concerned and understanding and will lend a helping hand whenever he can. Coach Coonan. who is rather Sentimental, Says that there are some things that have happened since he has been at Huntertown that he will never forget. With a gleam in his eye, he remarks, l'11 never fm-get that Garrett basketball game that took place on my birthday the first year I was here. During a pep 595- Si0n. I told the boys that if they WON the game, it Would be the best present they could give me. In that game. they were 15 points behind with just three minutes to go. Then, somehow, they tied the score and won that game in an overtime. Some other things that Terry will never forget are the county tournament championship of 1951-52, the cheering section at the county tournament in 1951, the day Bud May won the state shot-put champion- ship. the shot made by Jerry Buchanan that led H.H.S. to a one-point victory in the Huntertown-New Haven game in the county tourney of 1950, and the undefeated out-of-the-county record that H.H.S. has maintained during the five years that Terry has been coach. The Coonans had made their home in Huntertown but have recently moved to the country. Terry said that he and his wife, Dolly, whom he met while attending Indiana University, like to be considered part of the community. Even though coaching and basketball games take up many of Te-rry's evenings, he still finds time to be a good family man. Terry, who was an only child says, I go in for a big family now because I missed all of that childhood activity that is possible to have only when you have brothers and sisters. He is very proud of his four healthy children: Bill, his oldest son, is six years oldg Kathy is fourg Terry Michael is twog and Johnny is seven months. Terry speaks with a smile on his face as he makes known to the world what he thinks about Hunter- town. Before I came. I didn't know whether I would like it or not but I have found that I really love it. The feeling is mutual, for Huntertown loves-COACH TERRY COONAN, CHEERING BLOCK First Team Cheer Leaders Rowe, M. In making up this book we have used the class motto as our theme- The elevator to success is not runningg take the stairs. As our motto states, we started life at the bottom of the stairs and have been climbing steadily since. Sometimes we met obstacles that seemed impassible, but We always kept working and reaching for the next step of the stairs. In picture and in story we have tried to show in our Citadel some of the hardships and a lot of the pleasures we have ex- perienced on our flight of stairs through school. School is just one small-group of steps in our path up the stairway to success. We also take the liberty of using this page to dedicate this book to our patient and most helpful advisor, Mr. Donald E. Stebing, who has given a great amount of his time and energy to the production of this book. We also wish to thank Mr. Edwin Prible, our principal, Mr. George Fryback, who is now assistant principal, and Mr. V. W. Koepsell, our sponsor, for their guidance and direction in our crucial senior year. Page 2 Bud Shank-Forward Favorite shot-jump shot, Bob Harter-Guard Favorite shot7two hand set shot. We wander further down the shore and hear the mellow tenor voice of Paul McDaniel. He is serenading his one-and-onlyj' Pat Noble. We can't stay long, so we decide our next stop will be South America. There we see the Eskimo, Clarence Anderson, another of our old school chums, sitting on the equator trying to keep warm. While talking to Clarence, we see a great cloud of dust approaching us. lt is that notorious bandit, Al Leatherman. Behind him is the sheriff, Clarence Peters, with his posse consisting of Charlie Taner and Louise Tonkel. Al has smuggled the dead body of John Womack, whom he has killed, along with some dried Watermelons, developed by Dick Heffelfinger, from the island of Walla Walla. We board our atomic-powered plane and stop at Holly- wood, California. We enter the new movie studio of John Myers, who has the largest studio in the world. There we see the director, Fred Kell, tearing his hair out over the love scene of Nancy Peters and Kent Keener. While we are so close to Alcatraz, we decide to visit our old friend, Bob Englehart, who is in prison there. His wife, Alice Boroff, is Visiting him also. It is getting late, so we climb in our plane and start back for Huntertown. On our way back, we see Alvin Fritz flying through the air on his new flying saucer, the Merry Margaret. George Hess, in his doodlebug, is trying to catch Alvin. We run into a storm and a crack of lightning knocks us to the ground. Ooops! It was just a dream after all! We can be glad that it was!
