History of Class of '49 In the year 1937 we found Mildred Sauders helping George Hatch. Sonny Decker, Dorothy Forrest. Bertha Emrich. Clem Wetzel, Ruth Opliger, Iunior Houser, Martha Dice, Marilyn Gump, Robert Iones. Beulah Sloffer, Lois Longenecker, lack Walter, Diane Amstutz, Phil Dickes, Pat Kelham, George Dunten. Merlyn Hess, Betty Phillips, Ed Myers, Byron McBride, Mary Freeman, Eileen May cmd Sherry Witham into their boots and blowing their noses. Hurrah! We passed the lst grade. During the 2nd grade one fishee was added to the school. This was Don Smith. No fishees were added to the 3rd grade. In the 4th grade four fishees swam in: lean Shank, Charlene Smith, Bob Horstmeyer, and Lowell Brown. Twentyfnine fishees swam into the 5th grade. In the Sth grade thirty-two lovely iishees were netted by the lucky fishermen. lHerbert Gump and Lela Duntenl. the added three being Ioan Wappes. Wanda Waterson. and Les Thomas. During the next few years there were cr few more added to the school: Imogene Barhydt, Ruth Greuter, lack McComb, Phil Reicke. and Dale Adams. In Iune 1945, the fishees swam to the Shrine and brought back their blurred diplomas because we were not yet blessed with pens which write under water. In the freshmen year the fishees were joined by many tadpoles from surrounding schools. These included Trella Gross, Phyllis Hurst, Ray Leiter, Paul Gause, Robert Lutter, Richard Oakes, Iames Simon, Sally Whan, Norma Stirlen, Clem Bilger. Betty Fritz, Annamae Bowser, Ioan Schenher, Leola Iohnson, June Wilson. and Robert Hawk. The kingfisher in the freshman year was George Dunten. who was assisted by his mermaid. Iean Shank. Our sponsor was Miss Dill-now Mrs. Burns. Throughout the sophomore year the moss became thicker. lack McComb had to lead the way through with his assistants Sherry Witham, Paul Gause, and Bob Lutter. Romona Howard, Betty Knafel, Marilyn Deetz, and Barbara Mackey were added to our class. Our class was spon- sored by Mrs, Palacki and Mr. Appleman. The president, Don Smith, held in his fin, the underwater pen which laid out the work for the junior class and was assisted by lean Shank, Ed Myers, and lack Walter. Don Bauer was the only one to enter our class during that year. One of our activities was the Iunior and Senior Banquet, the theme of which was Stairway to the Stars. On October 30, Strictly Formal. our Iunior Play, was given and it tumed out to be the best play in the history of H. H. S, We were vastly helped along by Miss I-Inley and Mr. Sible. In 1949, now as Seniors, our sponsors are Mrs. Ferry, Mrs. Smith and Mr. Prible. Our class officers are Paul Gause, Clem Wetzel, lack Walter, and Byron McBride, One Step at a Time. but Always Forward, has been chosen as the class motto, the colors are blue and silver, and the flower is a white rose. Our class play is Don't Take My Penny . Now we are leaving the tributary of Huntertown and are swimming into the ocean of life. Sherry Witham Lois Longenecker Ed Myers 18
