When asked to write this for the Echo, I put much thought into what I was to write about, not about the school, because the school is just a building. It is our peers that make our experiences as students and adolescents positive or negative. Writing about the building itself seemed inane, for the effects on our life of an ugly bathroom or a faulty air-conditioning system are menial if not irrelevant. The students constitute the action at this level, and that social action is what so profoundly affects our lives. We were all basically fortunate to attend Hunterdon Central. This may seem incredibly hard to grasp, but nevertheless it is true. This school is located in the third richest county per capita in the entire United States. We have a list of activities and courses that far exceeds over ninety percent of all other schools in America. Athletically and academically, we are ranked near the top in those areas and almost any others that we participate in. Think of the kids that aren't so fortunate. While we complain that we aren't getting the slice of pizza with the most pepperoni or that the kid in front of us got three more french fries, we should think of those who aren't as lucky as us. Let us take our gifts and be thankful for them. Our attendance at this school is a gift in essence, not only because of the previously mentioned qualities, but because we have been afforded the best possible preparation for the world. We've had several choices of what to do, and a program to sup- port our desire has always been created or has always existed for us. Many did not use school as the learning tool that it is, and that is unfortunate, but, for the most part, we have. Our experiences at Central have been varied but, all things considered, we've been shaped into a decent set of people. We are not as unfortunate as you believe if you put things in perspective. A lot of confusing things, dare I say problems , exist in our little society, though. For example, explain why someone wearing combat boots and someone wearing a football jersey, or any other person from any other different social group cannot calmly sit beside one another and listen to an enchanting lecture on American history without yelling, picking fights, and other various attempts to make the other person's life that much more miserable. They say that they hate each other, but how can they? Have they ever had a conversation or gotten to know the other? How can you hate someone that you've never spoken to? You can disagree on certain issues and wear different apparel and still remain at peace with some- one in the same room. It is possible. Maybe if we didn't get so caught up in ourselves, these things wouldn't happen. If we rid ourselves of all these ridiculous social systems and just lived without worrying whether our clothes say Levi's , UFOIQDZHH, I...I... Bean , or Jamesway , things would be a little easier to swallow. This is, of course, asking too much. Let me say this. For the most part, we've spent four years with the people of the class of 1987. From freshman year tal- though some of us were never freshmen - the term ninth grader prevails most commonlyl up until now we've laughed, cried, passed, failed, liked, disliked, and lived with each other. These were the best years of our life. So, as a goodbye pre- sent, let's just say Congratulations to everyone, because everyone deserves it. Our social meat grinder has really made us into some fine hamburger Cas opposed to those frequently seen at fast food palacesl and everyone deserves a hand. Con- gratulations, you made it, and good luck in whatever you do. -- Kenny Martin 26
