Although it is one of the less no- ticed programs of the athletic de- partment, this year's winter track team was by far, the most success- ful season since the program was started, stated Coach Ludwig Lu- baszka. Winter track offers fun and competition for runners of all abili- ties and experience levels. Many athletes, not only those who partici- pate in Spring track, use the winter season to prepare for spring sports. It is a flexible program, with compe- tition ranging from the fun, lower pressure East Stroudsburg meets to state and national levels of competi- tion. On the boys' side, two school re- cords were set, one individual and one relay team. Kyle Thompson, a baseball player in the spring, reset Eddie Godown's former best in the 600 yard dash with a time of 1 .21.6. He was also one of the four who ran to a record setting 3:58.5 in the Spring Medley Relay on Lawrence- ville's banked track. Also running on his relay team were Mike McKenzie, Mike Schneider and Todd Leutnatt. The girls were also very successful with four relay records and two indi- vidual records. The distance crew of Kim Wilcox, Justina Doyle, Merrill McKenzie, Kristin Schatzel, and Jo- anna Norvell was able to combine their talents for two 3200m relay records as well as the fastest dis- tance medley team in the state. The girls competed in such prestigious meets as the West Point Invita- tional, Princeton Relays, and The Eastern State Championships held at Harvard University in Cam- bridge, Massachusetts. Individual hurdlers Jocelyn Doyle and Melanie Handshaw also set two individual re- cords, Jocelyn running the 600 yard dash in 1136.7 and Melanie tying Amanda Novell's best 55 High Hur- dles time of 9.7. The mikle relay team of Doyle, Schatzel, Tracy Con- ners, and Shannon Bauer were able to set two school record times in the mile relay competition with their best finally ending at 4:17.6. With these record performances plus a strong field of weights, sprints, and distances, hopefully this year's winter track successes will only be a starting point for the up- coming spring season.
