Cross Countr The 1986 boys' cross country team had a successful and win- ning year. With some talented transfers and hard working and dedicated returning Varsity let- ter winners the boys' outlook was optimistic. Early on in the season, the boys, with the help of co-captains Kenny Martin and Joe Cherry, beat Somerville for their first win. On their the sixth meet the boys had a disappointing loss to Voorheesg losing by only a few points. Another close loss was to arch-rivals North Hunterdon. At the end of the season, the boys rallied together to capture a sec- ond place in Mid-States. They , E Mtn, 1 .. st- .L . A. then went on to run to fourth place in the Central Group Four qualifying meet, enabling them to go on to the second of state qualifying meets. There they placed fourteenth. The boys will miss some exper- ienced seniors. Graduating are Mark Stutzman, Eric Trautman, Matt Dejneka, Ray Giordano, Joe Cherry and Kenny Martin. The 1986 girls' cross country team had a season full of many successes. Returning letter win- ners as well as dedicated junior varsity athletes led the team to a record of 11-1. Co-captains Mer- rill McKenzie, Melanie Aster, and Kristen Schatzel helped keep ev- eryone's spirits high and helped the team feel like a family of run- ners. Early in the season, through their excellent performances at Invitational competitions, the girls secured themselves a rank- ing of fourth in the state. In dual meet competition, they easily sped by their competitors with five perfect scores of 15-50, the equivalent of a shutout in other team sports. The only loss of the season was to top-ranked North Hunterdon. although the girls ran well, the Fast Ladies pre- vailed. The only other true chal- lenge in dual meet competition was against Phillipsburg. The op- posing harriers had some tough runners, but the Devils were not intimidated, winning 26-30. As the regular season came to a close, the runners' greatest challenges laid ahead. In Mid- States, central came in second, once again falling to a powerful North team. The girls, as expect- ed, retained their Central Jersey Group Four title, qualifying them for the Group Championships. Despite their high hopes, the girls did not have a good day. They ran to a disappointing sixth place which was unfortunately not good enough to qualify for the Meet of Champions. The team is losing a host of talented seniors, many who have led the team since they were freshmen four years ago. Even with this wealth of talent leaving, Central's team shows great promise for another successful season with many varsity level runners returning next year. front row fl. to IJ A. Martin, G.
