Girls' Gymnastics As with every team, the 1986 girls' gymnastics team had its ups and downs, but overall the season will be remembered for many years to come. Early in the season, injuries plagued the tum- blers, with two of the five varsity gymnasts spraining their ankles in less than two days. But even hindered, the girls were able to capture second place in their first big contest, The Trenton State Tournament. Needless to say, Coach Jennifer Speiker was proud. She definately saw the strength and potential in her team. With the first dual meet of the season's competition, the Devils took charge and defeated Pis- cataway, 94.5 points to 77.85 points. South Plainfield was the next team to fall to defeat, with a score of 100.75 to 78.55. The girls' first loss came against the strong Lenape team, but the Central girls weren't far behind, falling short 101.85-100.25. They got right back to business, as they took on Cherry l-lill East and defeated their opponents with 10.35 points to spare, and at the same time breaking the school record for total team points. Their new mark was 102.3 But that wasn't high enough for the dedicated team. Late in October, the team took on their biggest rivals, Somer- ville, and once again set a new mark at 104.35 beating the 'Ville's score of 100.9. Incredibly enough, this still was not good enough for our girls. They went on to set four new records in the next four successive dual meets. The final school record was 104.90 which crushed their com- petitors in the final dual meet of the season against Notre Dame. Unfortunately, it seemed as though this amazing winning streak had run out. Expecting to walk away with the Central Jer- sey Group Four Sectional title, 160 front row ll. to r.l M. Renda, C. Perna, Ms. Speiker the girls placed a disappointing fourth. But their disappointment was only short lived. Although unsatisfied by their performance, the team had an opportunity to redeem themselves in the State Championships. The goal for the Devils was to place at least sev- enth out of ten places. Coach Speiker commented, We've come this far. We might as well go for it. And go for it they did. Centralls girls, gymnastics team went on to become fifth in the state. This is the best that the girls, gym team had ever done since the existence of the sport at Central. Such a successful team could not have been possible if it weren't for strong contributions by juniors Tracy Jung and Becky Storholt, seniors Barbara Purcell and Jennifer Vincinguerra, and freshmen Michele Renda and Shannon Parry.

Girls' Tennis This year's girls' tennis team had an exciting and winning sea- son. The talented Varsity letter winners returning from the 1985 team were Sarah Andres, Kristy Gilbert, Julie Neet, Tracey Smith, and Diana Bishop. Their combined efforts pulled the team to a season of success. The girls, by the end of their season, had collected a number of accom- plishments. For the first time in Hunterdon Central's history, the girls' tennis team defeated the top ranked Watchung team. Throughout the season they were ranked first in West Jersey. An unfortunate loss to Somer- ville prevented the athletes from claiming the Mid-State title, and the girls came away with second place honors. The Red Devil net- ters also went to the Central Jer- sey Group Four tournament semi-finals. Another major ac- complishment was achieved by the first doubles team, Sarah Andres and Diana Bishop, who lost only one match all season and were named to the Mid-State Conference first team. Although the team will miss some top sen- ior players, next year's crew will still consist of many strong re- turning underclassmen. 162 front row fl. to rJ H.
