This year the Devils football team proved to be a team that could pull together during tough times. Despite a disappointing record of 2-7, the team never lost its fighting spirit. The combina- tion of a new head coach, Jim Meert, and a young team made the season a strengthening and learning experience. Early on in the season, Dennis Bakos and Erik Mont fell to injury keeping them out of action most of the season. Despite the loss Football the Devils pulled together to shut out Bridgewater West, 14-0. Central's offense showed its strength by rolling up 220 yards and 9 first downs. The Red Devil Gridders then met the Lions and went on to play a strong and de- fensive game, holding them off until the second half, when the Lions pulled ahead for a final score of 16-6. The team finished their season with success by de- feating Watchung Hills on Thanksgiving Day where the 154 Devils once again showed their awesome defense. Next year the football team should be excellent and greatly improved because of the many returning and experienced start- ers. Such promising starters to look for are quarterback Chris Bill, wide receiver Mark Soltis, offensive tackle and defensive tackle Ken Putlitz, linebacker Kevin Sutphen, safety Chris Rei- bold, and safety Al Kirschner. The team will miss some talented players due to graduation such as Luke Miller, Todd Crocco, Kendall Williams, Matt Schwartz, Doug Higgins and Erik Burford. The 1987 team will be sure to be a team to contend with, despite the loss of these seniors.
