This year's 1986 Soccer team once again proved themselves to be a competitive and formidable team to contend with. Led by captains Chip Clingham and Bill Schumacher the team achieved a 18-3-2 record. Returning letter winners Tim Morash, Kyle Thompson, Mike Darlington, Mike McKenzie, John McCarthy, Dan Blackwood, Matt Claus, Glen Klesat, Cliff Nurnberg, John Sumoski, and Kevin Sroka combined their talented efforts to make the '86 season a winning one. Many records were broken this season by the Red Devil booters. They captured the Mid- State Conference title which had eluded them for the past eight years. Tomi Leppiniemi, senior Finnish exchange student, set a record for most goals in a game with five goals and also broke the record for most goals in a season with 26. The team also set a re- cord for the most goals in a sea- son with a total of 72 goals. The team achieved their highest goal per game average with more than three per game. The aver- age goals given up was under one per gameg the team had eleven shutouts. All of these records cul- minated, brought them to a re- cord of 18-3-2, which ties the re- cord for most wins in a season. Although Bill Schumacher broke his ankle mid-way through the season, he and teammate Tomi Leppiniemi were chosen for the first team at Mid-State level. Mike McKenzie and Tim Morash were chosen for the sec- ond team. Schuumacher and 146 Soccer Leppiniemi were again paired to- gether, this time at the All-State levelg Junior, Matt Claus was named to the second team. Although the boys' squad was runner-up in the Central Jersey Group 4 finals, they rose to sec- ond in the Hunterdon-Warren Tournament. Coach Ries still has an exciting team to look forward to next year. With the combined efforts of the J.V. and freshmen teams as well as the many returning Varsity letter winners the '87 season should be one to watch. Front row: T. Peck,J. Sumoski, C.
