Exit the Bod On November 5 and 6, I983, the HCHS Fine Arts Department presented Fred Carmichael's Exit the Body. The play was directed by Mr. Harry Kazman with the assistance of State Manager Heidi Mclntyre. The curtain opened on the living room of a New England home in early August. The house had been rented by mystery writer, Crane Hammond, for one month. She soon learned that stolen diamonds were supposedly hidden in her house. The action of the play centered mainly around a closet which connected the living room and library. Crane discovered a body in it, shortly after arriving, which disappeared only to be promptly replaced by a second body. Meanwhile, Jenny, the maid, and Randolph had planned to return at 2 a.m. to search for the diamonds. Sheriff Vernon Cookley and Helen O'Toole did the same. Crane and her secretary, Kate, had invited Lillian and Lyle to join them in a search for the diamonds, also at 2 a.m. As the four couples entered and exited, they began to discover each other. Crane's husband returned early from the conference in Chicago, which he had been attending, adding to the confusion. Finally, Crane called everyone together and asked Jenny to get ice for the drinks. As Crane sat with her drink, she realized where the diamonds had been hidden. Slowly she raised her glass and announced that the ice was in the ice. The remainder of the play revealed that Jenny and Phillip Smith had been working undercover to catch the jewel thieves who turned out to be Randolph, working for Helen O'Toole. The close of the final curtain occurred as Crane Hammond fainted after opening the closet door and finding a body which turned out to be Vernon Cookley returning from the library with a book. l96fLlpperschool Play :xi
