Linda McClellan, Sherri Cooley, Coach Wasserman FRESHMEN: Front Row4L to RJ: Joyce Brokaw, Shannon McGreevy, Sharon Phillips, Kim Galoppo, Mary Ellen Rossi, Middle Row: Gina Contaldi, Becky Burgher, Kathy Gulick, Kim Cilla, Debbie Gooditis, Kris Burke: Back Row: Coach Tormey, Sue Meyer, Sandy Hume, Kerry McGowan, Karen Lanzen, Lynne Ashmen The Girls' Basketball team enjoyed a successful l982-83 season. This year's varsity team consisted of seniors Lori Horton, Karen Hume, Chris Martucci, Molly Ragette, Denise Venanzi and Kathy Young, juniors Chris Brokaw, Lynn Bethard, Cathy Cooper and Robbyn Stanley and sophomore Beth Wilbor. The J.V. players were juniors Linda McClellan, Jennifer Walsh, Kris Sincavage and Tracy Zapko, and sophomores Patty Brown, Sherry Cooley, Karen Cone, Kate Fisher, Trista Shyer and Jill Seibert. The season got off to a great start as all the teams remained undefeated in the first few games. One of these early season victories was against arch-rival North Hunterdon. The Devils beat the Lions by thirty points in that first match up. The girls were very overwhelmed at the easy slaughter they gave North. lt was a special feeling, since they lost to North twice last year. Experience and teamwork were keys to this year's successful season. Starting for the Devils were Chris Brokaw, Kathy Young, Denise Venanzi, and co-captains Molly Ragette and Karen Hume. Molly and Karen proved to be good captains as they possessed team spirit, leadership qualities and dedication. The entire team communicated well with each other on and off the court. Everyone was supportive to each other. This year's team was very balanced. Opponents soon realized that the Central bench could be just as destructive as the starting line up. Linda McClellan, Patty Brown and Kate Fisher came up from the J.V. team to get in some varsity playing time as well. The team also possessed strong versatility amongst its players. Another highlight of the season was the game against Somerville. The Devils unfortunately lost that first game to the visiting Pioneers. It was one of the more exciting games for Central. The girls were intimidated at first by the Somerville team which was a factor toward the heartbreaking loss. After first quarter fears, Central got it together but it was too late. One good thing did come from the experience, however, this was that the girls knew that they had the composure to come back against a tough team. Before the Somerville game, the girls had not been tested. An additional factor to Central's success was the many supportive fans. Parents and other students attended many of the games. Thanks should also be given to the hard-working statasticians and others who aided the team. Undoubtedly, good coaching is essential for a successful season. Coach Jennifer Spieker has had many winning seasons as a basketball coach at Central. This proved to be no different as the varsity team ended with another impressive record. This season Coach Speiker was assisted by former Freshman Coach, Paula Petrie. As usual, Coach Erie Wasserman did an outstanding job in coaching his J.V. team to yet another victorious season. This year's freshmen were headed by Coach Richard Tormey, they too, enjoyed a successful season. Outstanding team spirit and unity contributed positive results to this year's season. The players on all these teams cheered each other on by attending the many games. Everyone involved in the girls' basketball organization can be proud of the success enjoyed by all the teams. Hunterdon Central, which has always been a tough and competitive school, can once again be remembered as a winning champion. Girls' Basketballfl7l
