Boys' Basketba l still, -NSW .w-'RW This year has been a tough one for the Boys Basketball team. Not only was it the first year in the new conference, the mid-states, but it was also a year for rebuilding. Returning this year was only one letterman, Ted Gobillot. As in previous - years, Ted turned out to be a very important part of the starting line up since he averaged over 20 points a game. Ed Kutt was another senior starter who seems to have adjusted well to his first year of high school basketball. There were a few games that Ed dominated both offensive and defensive boards. The only other senior who started was Bob Moore. In only his second year at Central, he was again a fine defensive I66fBoys' Basketball player as well as one of the main ball handlers on the team. Rounding out the starters were juniors Bill Griffing and Kevin Mahar. Bill seemed to find his place halfway through the season and average over ten points a game. He also set a career high for himself with 25 points in a game against Hillsboro. Kevin returned from a back injury this year and contributed his part of a very aggressive defense which was neccessary at times. Our other two returning seniors were Mike Bill and Ken Giles. Mike played numerous games and was valued greatly for his quickness on a steal and fastbreak. Ken Giles whose senior leadership and passing ability added to the Central attack. Junior John Bredeson replaced an injured Bob Moore late in the season. John proved his place among the varsity with his quick steals and fast hands during the season. Junior Chris Kanaby and Sophmore A.R. Seaman split time between JV and Varsity and big things are expectedtof them next year, since five of our ten man squad will be graduating. Central started out I and 5 as they fell three times in the Kennedy Memorial lnvitational Tournament. Central then got things rolling with three straight wins against North Hunterdon, Bridgewater Raritan East, and South Plainfield before losing a two point decision against Watchung Hills. Two high points of the season were victories against archrivals North Hunterdon and Voorhees. Another high point of the season was Ted Gobillot breaking Bill Wallace's scoring record of 42 points in a single game. The senior captain did this with 44 points in a game against Bridgewater Raritan West. Gobillot also joins Bill Littlefield as the only other l000 point scorer in Central History. Although it was our first year in this conference, the Red Devils gained some respect with a .500 record in the Mid- states. The new conference is much tougher than the DRC ever was, but the team will gradually rebuild and find its place among its challengers. Coach Joe Kleczynski looks forward to another strong year in the Mid-states with a strong nucleus returning.
