,444 Junior Varsity: Front Row QL to RQ: Sharon Opdyke, Middle Row: Coach Zamek, Kitty Cilla, Dawn Bridenbaugh, Diane Back Row: Veronica Bennett, Karen Fisher, Sue Pursell, Debbi Smutney In Sectionals, the team placed 5th as a team and Sherry Pettit placed 6th on the bars individually. Sherry, therefore ad- lvanced to the States, but unfortunately 7 did not place in State competition. This year, Captains Ellen Denbigh and Donna Schweitering and senior Eileen Morton will be graduating. This season Ellen competed on all four events. With much Spirit and determina- tion, she was always a very important part of the team score. Like Ellen. Donna Schweitering came through for us this past year, said Spieker. Although beam was Donna's strong point, she also competed bars and floor. Among her accomplishments this season was a personal high score of 8.5 on the beam. Eileen competed in two events this year, vaulting and bars. Eileen really pro- gressed throughout her four years on the team. By extending her knowledge to younger teammates, she helped them im- prove on bars, said Spieker. The high moral, giving and sense of friendship on the team this year will hope- fully continue next year when Juniors Sherry Pettit, Tracy Steil, Julie McCor- mick and Eileen Fisher, and Sophomores Jill Glassman and Sharron Mahn return for another promising season. Girl's G mnastics Varsity QL to RJ: Jill Glassman, Julie McCormack, Eileen Morton, Donna Schwietering, Ellen Denbigh, Tracy Steil. Sherry Pettit, Eileen Fisher, Peri Myers I62fGirls' Gymnastics so smoxmo l 9 Q1 The girls gymnastics team, coached by Jennifer Spieker and Linda Zamek, fin- ished an outstanding season with an ll-I record. This is collectively the best group of gymnasts to come through Hun- terdon Central, remarked Coach Spieker. Led by captains Ellen Denbigh and Donna Schwietering, the team obvi- ously was off to a promising start when they scored an impressive IOO.7 against Piscataway in their first meet when Ju- nior Sherry Pettit scored a season high all around total of 35.2. One of the real highlights this season was the meet against Madison Central, Spieker said. We arrived late, had insuf- ficient warm-up time, and had suffered a lot of injuries, yet the team still came through with a .7 win. l think that meet really exemplified the competiveness of the girls Again the team scored over IOO. On October 26, Somerville, also unde- feated, competed against the Devils in 1 very exciting meet. Competing in front o a large crowd, the Devils continually trailed by tenths or equalled Somerville's scores. Junior Tracy Steil placed first on bars with an 8.8 and senior Donna Schwie- tering placed first on the beam with an 8.45. Unfortunately, though, the Devils still could not pull off the win, and they suffered their only loss of the season.
