GlRL'S CROSS COUNTRY: Front Row CL to Rb: Janet Niegel, Michelle Mont, Chris Zdepski, Melissa Vozzo, Vicki Jakelski. Leigh Ann Best: Middle Row, Jeanne McKinney, Seema Dalal, Sue Bal, Debbie Leidich, Karen Cone, Tina Moon, Janelle Neeld, Back Row. Statistician Peggy Serridge, Coach Lubaszka. Tough competition faced the l982 Girls' Cross Country team as they entered the Mid-State Conference. The easy shutout matches that they knew in the Delaware River Conference were fewer than before. Still the Devil girls broke well ahead of the .500 mark with a dual meet record of 7-5 and were fifth out of ten teams at the Conference Championships, their most important big X-c. X race of the year. Senior Christine Zdepski led the red and black through the fall of '82 with sophomore Karen Cone, junior Janet Niegel and seniors Michelle Mont and Melissa Vozzo also bringing in the scores in racing action. Running sixth and seventh on the Central squad were junior Leigh Ann Best and sophomore Tina Moon. The Devil team, under the coaching of veteran Ludwik Lubaszka, fell to Steinert in their first dual meet, but then bounced back to outrun four teams in a row, beating Bridgewater West and Watchung Hills and shutting out Piscataway and South Plainfield the next week. During the rest of the season, the Central girls faced tougher teams and won a match for each that they lost. The state championship North Hunterdon team won over the girls 44-I6, but the girl Devils ran down Delaware Valley 20-30, only to lose to Franklin a few days later. At the Conference championships, the red and black runners found themselves in fifth place, behind teams from North Hunterdon, Voorhees, Franklin, and Somerville. The girls went on to beat Bridgewater East by a score of I9-36 and finally shut out Hillsborough I5-50. At the Sectional Championships, the girls placed seventh overall, because only the top five teams in the race got to advance to the Group IV finals, Hunterdon Central did not qualify to race the following week. Christine Zdepski, Michelle Mont, and Melissa Vozzo are the three runners to leave the Central squad for graduation this year. Varsity competitors Karen Cone, Janet Niegel, Leigh Ann Best, and Tina Moon will lead the I983 team next year for another successful season. Girl's Cross Countryfl59

'M -Q The HCHS Boy's Gymnastics Team could have hardly improved on their performance this year. The only team in the state to finish the season undefeated, they went on to take the state crown in a record-breaking championship meet held at Central. Having won the state crown in l975, the Devils became the only team besides East Brunswick to take the title more than once. The team was coached by Peter Fick and Dick Shaefer. The varsity squad was comprised of seniors Matt Pfenninger, Ben Rovee, Bob Nichols, Lee Mack, Jeff Fabijanic, and Joe Sheppard, and juniors Kirby Fowler and Tony Malba. ant, 'Masq Q 'iftgs iff sg-as-Eg has U K, ,..L,s,,s- M., , The team started the State Championship meet strongly, obtaining first place team scores on both floor and pommel horse, Lee Mack taking first place with a 6.55 in the pommel horse event. Ben Rovee then set a new school record on rings with a score of 8.65, taking second in the event. Pfenninger followed suit by tal-:ing first in the next event - vaulting horse. Tensions ran high as the team members realized that they were heading into their two weakest events, parallel bars and horizontal bar, with only a .55 lead over the East Brunswick Bears, two-time winners of the State Crown. When l saw how close it was, I knew we were in trouble, reminisced Coach Fick. But the team pulled through, due to the extraordinary efforts of Rovee, Nichols, and Pfenninger. Matt's horizontal bar routine was the climax of the meet for the HCHS boys, and he came through by setting a new school record and taking second inthe event with an 8.3. The boys finished the meet with an accumulation of l25.l5 points, just .3 point ahead of East Brunswick. An unbelievable ending to a great year. Boy's GymnasticsfI6l
