Introducing - the ffnewn Red Devil Marching Band by Janet Olson ls that our band?,' Who are those people in the cowboy outfits? This can't be Central's band. These were the comments from the football stands since the Hunter- don Central Marching band decided to change its style and become com- petitive. This year, the band adopted a drum corpsi' marching style. In the past, Central used a big teni' for- mat. The main differences between the two styles are the different types of music played and the perfor- mance of the band as a whole. Previously, the band played light, popular songs. With its new drum corps style, however, the band plays more difficult, dramatic music. The actual performance of the show has also changed. This is espe- cially evident in the color guard -- flags, rifles, and twirlers. Previous- ly, the guard's different units marched to a spot on the field where they remained for most of the song and performed a routine which they had developed themselves. Now, however, the guard marches along Drum majorette and drum major: Collccn Beckman and Dwight Paul with the band, and the routines are coordinated. We want the flags and rifles to be coordinated with the actual show, said Mr. George Balog, the marching band director. The band worked very hard, prac- ticing during the summer and after school. It is striving for its own rec- ognition. It would like to be seen as more than a supporter of the foot- ball team. We'd like to reach the point where the audience stays in the stands during half-time to appreci- ate the hard work the band has donef, said Balog. In its quest for recognition, the band entered competition this year. It participated in the Superchief Band Festival at Piscataway High School where it received two ratings of excellent, an outstanding achievement for its first competi- tion. Hopefully, the hard work will continue to pay off. .4-l 244
