irls's varsity basketball advances to States by Jordan Strassman From where we began, to the ac- complishment achieved, especially with such a diverse group of players, we've taken great strides. Remem- ber, the team is mostly composed of juniors, commented Coach Jenni- fer Spieker about the 1982 girls, varsity basketball team. The team ended its season with a record of 16-8. Leading offensive re- bounder was junior Denise Venanzi with 65. Leading defensive re- bounder was junior Karen Hume, with 96. Overall number one re- bounder was captured by Hume, with 159. Junior Chris Brokaw led the team in assists. They totaled 31. The steals category belonged to sen- ior guard Stephanie Guidotti, with 56, and the seasonfs high scorer was Hume, with a total of 244 points. Awesome outside shooting by Guidotti, junior guard Kathy Young, and junior forwards Cindy Anderson and Lori Horton made the team even more of a threat. For Central's inside game, Spieker re- lied on juniors Molly Ragette, Jane Stettner, and Denise Venanzi. Sophomores Chris Brokaw and Cathy Cooper came off the JV squad in mid-season to contribute to the teamls efforts on several occa- sions. The girls' hard work paid off as they advanced to the States. They won their first game, defeating Middletown South 59-58. They lost their second game, in the quarter finals, by a score of 50-46. They worked harder during the two States than during the season. They were motivatedf' commented Spieker. Next year's team looks promis- ing, as only two of the starting five graduate this year H Stephanie Guidotti and Kelly Laird.
