Varsity Wrestling places second in Group by Dawn Bridenbaugh According to Coach Russ Riegel, the 1982 varsity wrestling team was one of the best teams he's ever coached even though it had one of the worst records C12-71. Riegel commented, The wres- tlers went from a no-name group to the Central Jersey Group IV Cham- pionships and to placing second in all of Group IV. They went from third in the H.C.W.I.T. to the Dis- trict 17 champs. They went from no- where to the top? The Devil team, at its highest, was ranked seventh in the state. The varsity line-up for this year was as follows: 101 - Greg Troisi, 108 - Brian Lowrie, 115 - Tony Malba, 122 - Denis Grady, 135 - Dave Nicoletti, 141 - Fred Herr- mann, l48 - Star Novak, 158 - Todd Patton, 170 - Jim Petrozellif George Paliatsos, 188 - John Hampton, and unlimited - Joe Lentine. Returning letter winners this year were seniors John Hampton, Joe Lentine, Dave Nicoletti, Jim Petro- zelli, and Ed Rehl, junior Denis Grady, and sophomores Tony Malba, Todd Patton, and Steve Winget. After losing to both Voorhees and North Hunterdon during the regu- lar season, the Devils pulled it to- gether and defeated them both to win the District 17 title with 140 team points compared to the 133 and 121 team points accumulated by Voorhees and North respective- ly. Gold medalists for Central were sophomores Greg Troisi, at 101, ju- nior Denis Grady, at 122, and at 158, sophomore Todd Patton. Silver medalists were sophomore Tony Malba, at 115, senior Dave Nico- letti, at 135, and at 141, sophomore Fred Herrmann. The only state winner for Central was Denis Grady.
