N ' ' 1 an -a-...V ik.. ,is Central's X-country girls still running hard by Chris Switky Running in the wake of a 1979 state champion team and an '80 squad that finished fifth overall at the Meet of Champions is far from easy. A great deal was expected of the 1981 girls, cross country crew based on seasons past. Seniors Cricket Batz Ccaptainj and Patti Vowinkel Cco-captainj led the team through seven dual meets - six of which found the Devils superior. The North Hunterdon girls, who later went on to be state champs, were the only team to defeat Hun- terdon Central as the red and black outran both familiar DRC teams and runners from the powerful Mid- State Conference. From the opener victory over Bridgewater West, to the final Hackettstown meet, sen- iors Cricket Batz and Patti Vowin- kel, and juniors Chris Zdepski, Mi- chelle Mont, and Melissa Vozzo grabbed the first three or four places. Sophomore, Heather Mason and freshman, Karen Cone were not far behind. Top invitational perfor- mances included bronze medals at Bernards and fifth at the Pioneer Invitational. Under veteran running coach Ludwik Lubaszka, the girl Devils came home with a second place in a historic DRC meet, a third place showing at the Section- als, and eighth in the Groups meet. Standout Cricket Batz was recog- nized state-wide, ending the '81 sea- son 16th fastest in the state. Cricket Batz and Patti Vowinkel, who were a part of the State Cham- pion 1979 team, graduate this year, along with Jenny Grill, leaving Chris Zdepski, Michelle Mont, and Melissa Vozzo to head the 1982 squad as Hunterdon Central com- petes for the first time as a Mid- State Conference team. To back them up will be Heather Mason and Karen Cone with Wendy Van Duyne, Debbie Graper and Laurie Graper. 159 4
