oysi X-Country: New runners round out field by Chris Switky In short, the varsity team saw new faces in top spots. Expectedly, sen- ior Carl Ramirez led the boys' cross country squad during the 1981 sea- son as it compiled a dual meet re- cord of 7-3, including two shutouts, and performed respectably at its in- vitational competitions. But few would have guessed that senior transfer student Fred Ferry, juniors Rick Herdman and Rick Ham- mond, and freshman Randy Sepcic would comprise the other four of Hunterdon Centralis top five team members. This fast crew, backed by Devil runners Mike Brake, Rich Cherry, Jim Herdman, Dan Brew- ster and Paul Madonia, managed to surprise many opponents with strong races throughout the fall, though not without disappoint- ments. Number one on Central's agenda was a 21-37 flower score winsl vic- tory over Bridgewater West, to be followed by two more wins, includ- ing a shutout against Hillsborough. The Pioneer Invitational saw the red and black place fifth in a very com- petitive field of teams from both New Jersey and New York. Despite personal best performances at North Hunterdon, Hunterdon Cen- tral lost to the Lions 39-20, leaving the record at 3-1. Again, in a com- petitive invitational, the Devils out- ran many top teams at Holmdel to capture eighth place, only to be de- feated by Somerville the next week 28-27. But the letdowns were be- hind them, as the red and black picked up the pace. Hunterdon Central ran for silver at the Bernards Invitational, taking second in the Group IV division race, and swept three more victories by consecutively beating Delaware Valley, Hamilton West and South Hunterdon. A loss to Voorhees Cal- though team captain Carl Ramirez took the win in that raceD and a shut- out over Hackettstown wrapped up the dual meet season. Coach Dave Kelber's runners went on to a third place in both the Conference meet and in the Sectionals, and finally, to a seventh at the Groups competi- tion. In junior varsity action, Cen- tral ran away with first in the DRC, and a meet record of 8-1 and second place in the Bernards Invitational. Cross Country is much more than meet records and place numbers, it is a group of runners pushing them- selves past their physical limita- tions, each individual passing as many racers as possible within a 3.1 mile distance. Improvement is never impossible M there is always someone in front to pass, if not a time to better, in order to score little enough points to win a race, an invi- tational, a championship. Graduat- ing from the 1981 team are Carl Ramirez, Fred Ferry, Mike Brake, Rich Cherry, John Vanderwolf and Mark Phillips. Rick Herdman and Rick Hammond, as well as Randy Sepcic, will head the 182 team, along with Dan Brewster, Jim Herdman, Paul Madonia, and JV runners Chris Switky and Brian Acken. Next year's squad should see more competition, and better teams, as Hunterdon Central enters the Mid- State Conference.
