L , ,, Q K, E. . Field Hockey m.e. 5 J 1981 Field hockey has another winning season by Michelle Aimone The girls' field hockey team had another winning season, as they fin- ished their 1981 campaign with an 8-8-3 record. Paving the way for this year's var- sity squad, were seniors Anne Craft Mickie Cramer, Beth Gootee, Caren Hockenbury, Shelly Matto, Chris Noll, Theresa Pfenninger Mary Scheier, and Cindy Stedman. Also contributing to the team, were juniors Jenny Alexion, Cindy An- derson, Lori Horton, Linda Laneve, Nancy McCormack, Denise Ven- anzi, Mary Walker, and sopho- mores Lisa Lilolia and Brigid Pfen- ninger. Miss Paula Petrie, a former All American hockey player and Uni- 3 3 versity of Delaware standout, made the jump from junior varsity to var- sity Head Coach this year. That jump left a vacancy on the JV level which Mr. Richard Tormey filled. Mr. Tormey teaches eighth grade science at the Reading-Flem- ing Middle School and is a newcom- er to hockey. Although hockey is new to him, coaching is not. He has coached in girls' programs for six years. In his first year, he did a su- perb job, as his team finished with a 13-3-2 record. Mr. Tormey hopes to be back for the 1982 season. The Red Devils' season was a se- ries of ups and downs. Their season began strongly, with the girls re- maining undefeated in their first seven games. The next three games proved to be disappointing, howev- er, as the team dropped three straight. They bounced back in the next five contests to improve their record but then ended their regular season with three defeats. Their re- cord of 8-7-3 was good enough to grant them a spot in the NJSIAA state tournament. The girls traveled to Middletown North and lost a tough contest, 2-1, in triple over- time. Next year, the girls will play in the tough Mid-State Conference, but with almost half of their varsity team returning, augmented by a strong junior varsity squad, the girls' field hockey team looks to- wards the 1982 season with confi- dence.
