Soccer Centralis soccer: Nothing less than awesome by Chris Lwowski Hunterdon Central's 1981 soccer season was one of the most success- ful in Hunterdon Central history. Dedication, determination, and group effort were the key forces which led Hunterdon Central as far as the Central Jersey Group IV fin- als. Led by the superb coaching of Larry Ries and Charlie Stretch', Levis, the Devils finished their sea- son with an outstanding 16-4-3 re- cord. The season opened with a 1-0 loss to the always tough Notre Dame. Next came Warren Hills and a shu- tout for goalie Ted Gobillot, one of six shutouts this season. When it came time for the Devils to meet North Hunterdon, their record was 2-2-2. After beating North, Warren Hills, and Franklin Township, the Devils had a record of 5-2-2. After losing to Hackettstown C1-OJ and ty- ing Governor Livingston C0-OJ, the Devils buckled down and started their winning streak. After beating North Hunterdon for the second time, there was no looking back for the mighty Devils. By the end of their regular season, the Devils had a very impressive 12-3-3 record un- der their belt. With a strong offense led by co- captains Bryan Lippincott and Gary Etter, Carlos Carvajal, and Reini Martin, and a mighty defense led by co-captain Chris Nowak, Brad Parker, and Jesse Myers, the Devils were not going to let anyone stand in their way. In the first game of the state play- offs, Central beat the Piscataway Chiefs 1-0. The Devils' next victim was state power Edison. After a strenuous regulation game, over- time, and two shoot outs, the Devils came through with a 2-1 victory. Next, Central hosted last yearis State Champs, Neptune, in the semi-finals of the Central Jersey Group IV play-offs. Once again, the Devils prevailed by beating Nep- tune 3-1. In the finals against Ham- ilton West, though, the Devils suf- fered a bitter defeat, losing in the shoot out. All in all, it was an outstanding season for Coach Ries and his mighty Devils. The future looks bright for Hunterdon Central soc- cer, andthe title of State Champs is on the horizon. 149
