Football .5 4. I Q 1 we N . ' RFQ- 4 ' f -1 fs 1 ,- North victory highlights 1981 football season by Faith Ballentine It was a trying year for Hunter- don Centralls football program. Un- der the leadership of second-year Head Coach Rich Harris, the Devil gridders set high hopes for the 1981 season. They had 20 seniors return- ing, 17 of which had their varsity letter. With practically all of last year's defense and most of the of- fense intact, the nine-man coaching staff set to work with the team, strengthening them for their final season in the DRC. Coach Tom Carr, again acting as Defensive Coordinator, worked with Jim Magnetta, appointed Of- fensive Coordinator, to pull the squad together. Coaches Ed Kle- peisz, Keith Lupo, Ken Garay, Gary Dambro, Bob DeVoto, and Em Fos- ter also combined to help better the team. Despite high hopes, it was a rath- er disappointing season. Wins over Phillipsburg Catholic and Delaware Valley, however, helped the squadis attitude, but the most significant game was the traditional meeting with rival North Hunterdon, the first night game in Hunterdon Cen- tral's history. The game proved that the Devils had some of the past years' fight, as Central triumphed 13-6. It was the first time in three years that Central had beaten North and proved to be the high- light of the 1981 season. In spite of the record, the 1981 squad was composed of many fine players. On defense, seniors John Lyons, Ira Rubin, John Hampton, Bob Hoffman, Andy Rawlins, Scott Crocco, Lou Monaco, Ray Hatton, Jim Adams, and juniors Mike Gare- fino and Darrin Miller managed to hold the opposition. On offense, sen- iors Ray Hatton, Mike Squier, Alex Urchuck, Ed Santiago, Kurt Smith, Ira Rubin, juniors Darrin Miller, Mark Pfenninger, Tom Clark, and sophomores Doug Miller, Darren Dalley, and Fred Herrmann were responsible for scoring. Seniors Bob Hoffman and John Hampton re- ceived post-season recognition, the coaches nominated them to the All DRC Defensive Team at their re- spective positions. Hunterdon Central's underclass teams had excellent seasons. The JV team went 7-1 C7-2 overallj, and the freshman team ended with a 5-2-2 record. The sophomore team was 3- 0 on the season as they played only Mid-State Conference schools. Next year, the football team is looking to greatly improve their 3-6 record. They will have to play hard- er, as they are entering the Mid- State Conference, but with many fine underclassmen coming up, the team will reach success. ,
