Ability is a poor man's wealth.” The ablest mer in all walks of modern life are men of faith. Action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action. A good action is never lost; it is a treasure laid up and guarded for the doer. Prosperity is not just scale; adversity is the only balance to weigh friends. The sharpest sting of adversity it borrows from our own impatience. How is it possible to expect mankind to take advice when they will not so much as take warning. To accept good advice is but to ircrease one's own ability. To be happy, we must be true to nature and carry our age along with us. As we grow old we become both more foolish and more wise. The golden age is before us, not behind us. When we are out of sympathy with the young, then I think our work in this world is over. At twenty, the will reigns; at thirty, the wit; at forty, the judgment; afterward, proportion of character. The evening of a well-spent life brings its lamps with it. That man never grows old who keeps a child in his heart. Ambition is the germ from which all growth of nobleness proceeds. Ambition is the spur that makes man struggle with destiny. The noblest spirit is most strongly attracted by the love of glory. Ambition is but the evil shadow of aspiration. Ambition is not a weakness unless it be disproportioned to the capacity. Most people would succeed in small things if they were not troubled by great ambitions. The very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream. How like a mounting devil in the heart rules the unreined ambition. Too often those who entertain ambition, expel remorse and nature. Ambition is not a vice of little people. Never give a man up until he has failed at something he likes.” Sometimes a noble failure serves the world as faithfully as a distinguished success.” To have too much forethought is the part of a wretch; to have too little is the part of a fool.” Better are the blows of a friend than the false kisses of an enemy.” He alone has lost the art to live who cannot win new friends.” Friendship is the shadow of the evening, which strengthens with the setting sun of life.” Genius is nothing but continued attention.” The greatest genius is never so great as when it is chastised and subdued by the highest reason.” A good man is kinder to his enemy than bad men to their friends.” Goodness consists not in the outward things we do, but in the inward thing we are-To be good is the great thing.” Your actions, in passing, pass not away, for every good work is a grain of seed for eternal life.” Ignorance has been said to be the mother of devotion; it is rather the mother of superstition.” The highest reach of human science is the scientific recognition of human ignorance.” Don't despair of a student if he has one clear idea.” Intelligence incre ases mere physical ability one half.-The use of the head abridges the labor of the hands.” Judge thyself with the judgment of sincerity, and thou wilt judge others with the judgement of charity. The first step to knowledge is to know that we are ignorant.” What we know here is very little, but what we are ignorant of is immense.” Learning passes for wisdom among those who want both.” He who has no inclination to learn more will be very apt to think that he knows enough. To be proud of learning, is the greatest ignorance.” It is easy to learn something about everything, but difficult to learn everything about anything. Tis not what man does which exalts him. but what man would do.” Man ought always to have something that he prefers to life; otherwise life itself will seem to him tiresome and void.” God has never ceased to be the one true aim of all right human aspirations.” Man can climb to the highest summits but he cannot dwell there long.” He who is firmly seated in authority soon learns to think security, and not progress, the highest lesson of statecraft.” In this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.” The best way to do good to ourselves, is to do it to others; the right way to gather, is to scatter.” He who wishes to secure the good of others, has already secured his own.” It is good to think well; it is divine to act well.” Character is perfectly educated will. . Character is the result of two things: Mental attitude and the way we spend our time.” ‘ Character building begins in our infancy and continues until death.” Not education, but character, is man's greatest need and man's greatest safeguard.” What others say of me matters little, what I myself say and do matters much.” There is nothing so fatal to character as half-finished tasks.” If I take care of my character, my reputation will take care of itself.” Good character is human nature in its best form.” You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge one for yourself.” Cheerfulness is health; its opposite, melancholy, is disease. An ounce of cheerfulness is worth a pound of sadness to serve God with.- The habit of looking on the best side of every event is wcrth more than a thousard pounds a year.” To make knowledge valuable, you must have the cheerfulness of wisdom.” Life often presents us with a choice of evils rather than of good. The measure of choosing well, is, whether a man likes and finds good in what he has chosen.” Between two evils, choose neither; between two goods, choose both. Common sense is the knack of seeing things as they are, and doing things as they ought to be done. One pound of learning requires ten pounds of common sense to’apply it.” Conduct is the great profession. Behavior is the perpetual revealing of us. What a man does, tells us what he is. The integrity of men is to be measured by their conduct, not by their professions.” In counsel it is good to see dangers; but in execution, not to see them urless they be very great. Courage consists, not in blindly overlooking danger, but in seeing and conquering it.” No man can answer for his courage who has never been in danger. A great deal of talent is lost in this world for the want of a little courage. What is defeat?-Nothing but education; nothing but the first step to something better. What we hope ever to do with ease, we must learn first to do with diligence. Do the duty which lieth nearest to thee; thy second duty will already have become clearer. Who escapes a duty, avoids a gain. A human being -s not, in any proper sense, a human being till he is educated. Character development is the great, if not the sole, aim of education. He is to be educated not because he is to make shoes, nails, and pins, but because he is a man. Education is the cheap defense of nations. Education is a debt due from the present to future generations. The wisest man may always learn something from the humblest peasant. It is by education I learn to do by choice, what other men do by the constraint of fear. Never educate a child to be a gentleman or lady only, but to be a man, a woman.” Not to enjoy life, but to employ life, ought to be our aim and inspiration. Occupation is one great source of enjoyment. No man, properly occupied, was ever miserable. 216 ' ' ' • -- — • • . ■ ■ . • • ■ + . •J . %. -At- ,c. . A ■
