DEDICATION The Hunter Huss Astron Staff is honored to dedicate the 1978-1979 edition of the Astron to Mr. Richard Stroupe. Graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mr. Stroupe received his degree in chemistry. He has been teaching chemistry and biology at Huss since the school opened in 1962. In addition to his teaching duties, he has been the sponsor of the Future Scientists of America, the Conservation Club, and is currently a Pep Club advisor. Concerned with the beautification of the school, he is responsible for the planting of many of the trees and shrubs found on the school grounds. Mr. Stroupe truly fits the definition of school spirited through his avid support of all athletic teams as well as his concern for the school as a whole. 20 21 PRINCIPAL Mr. Russel Clark is now in his fourth year as principal of Hunter Huss High School. Centering his attention on education, Mr. Clark taught at Huss for several years, became a member of the faculty of Ashley Jr. High School in 1970, and then served as principal of Southwest Jr. High School in 1972-1975. He returned to Huss in 1976 to fill the position of principal. In these few years Mr. Clark has shown much concern for the students through his continued work in student affairs. ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Mr. Nikki Helms, who graduated from Appalachian State University, is serving his first year as an assistant principal at Hunter Huss. His duties include buses, discipline, and school maintenance. Mr. George Jaggers, a graduate of North Carolina A T, has filled the position of assistant principal for four years. He has many duties ranging from book reports and student absences to discipline and early dismissals. SECRETARIES Mrs. Brenda Turlington, who has served as secretary at Huss for sixteen years, has become an indispensable member of the office staff. She performs all of her varied duties very efficiently, making her a valuable asset to the staff. Mrs. Maude Ramsey has serves as a secretary at Huss for five years. Among her duties are the attendance reports and absentee lists. She has indeed shown her importance as a member of the office staff. 23 GUIDANCE COUNSELORS In his second year at Huss, Mr. Dean Brown counsels seniors. is in charge of scholarships. processes college applications. and informs students of college opportunities. He is also in charge of the Student Government Association and the Inter-Club Council. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Mrs. Janet Green, who received her Master's Degree from Western Carolina University. serves as the sophomore counselor. She spends most of her time placing students in special programs, helping students with academic as well as personal problems, and registering students. Mr. Ray Benton, a graduate of Western Carolina University, received his Master’s Degree from Winthrop College. He serves as a junior counselor and spends much of his time working with student schedules and informing students of career and educational opportunities. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT Serving as athletic director for seven years. Mr. Don Saine is in charge of coordination of all the sports at Huss. Along with his duties as athletic director, he is also the head football and baseball coach. Mr. Saine succeeds in making competition and sportsmanship an important part of the athletic program. Mrs. Sue Sellers, a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, has served as administrative assistant to Mr. Clark for six years. The events included luncheons, dances, and a pageant, as well as the Thanksgiving Day parade. Mary later was featured in the Gastonia parade as Huss' Carousel Princess. Perhaps the most appropriate adjective to describe Leslie Dixon is intellectual. Because of her high PSAT scores. Leslie qualified as a National Merit Semi-finalist. She also served as a graduation marshall for the 1978 commencement exercises. In addition to her academic achievements. Leslie acts as President of the Taps club, an organization associated with the March of Dimes. Rufus Friday has displayed his athletic prowess quite well in his three years at Huss. Playing football for the past two years, he started as an end this year. He also played junior varsity basketball for two years, and served as a forward on this year's varsity team. Rufus holds the Presidential office of the Boys' H-Club. and also participates in the Boys' FCA and the ICC. SENIORS Quietly involved in almost all phases of school life. Gaye Bridges devotes hours of behind-the-scenes work on various activities. Serving as President of the Pep Club, she was responsible for the success of the Homecoming Show. Gaye's other activities include the Civinettes. of which she is scrapbook chairman. Beta Club. Girls' FCA. ICC. and the ASTRON staff. 186 OUTSTANDING Through the band. Roselyn Grissom's musical ability has served her school well in her years at Huss. She is a clarinetist for the symphonic band, as well as drum major for the marching Huskies. Roselyn reigns as the current Miss Hunter Huss. She is a member of the Beta Club and Civinettes. and serves on the French Club Executive Council. After three years of French, she tutors second year students. Also chosen as a marshall. Roselyn participated m the graduation exercises her junior year. A diligent worker. Marcie Hicks, as student body Secretary-Treasurer. has involved herself in many activities. The Associate Editor of the HUNTER. Marcie holds the position just under the Editor-in-Chief. She is active in Pep Club. Youth for Understanding, and the Hunter Huss drama department. This year she took part in Homecoming Activities as a homecoming sponsor. John Graham first exhibited a concern in student affairs his junior year by running for. and winning, the position of student body Vice-President. He continued his interest in student government this year as student body President. John attended Boy's State last summer, and represented Hunter Huss at the Youth Advisory Committee for the Gaston County Board of Education. This year's Political Editor. Rusty involves himsell deeply in his music; he teaches guitar and studies piano and voice in his limited spare moments. A talented young lady with diversified interests. Cam, ston also manages to maintain a high academic avera fact demonstrated by her selection 3S a grdduation shall her junior year. Assuming the leadership role ol French club. Cam also holds offices in Beta Club and G FCA; she is Editor-in-Chief of the HUNTER. A well-rouih athlete, Cam has lettered in tennis and basketball for t years, and in softball for three years. Well-known and well-loved by all her classmates. Mary Pearson participates in all areas of student involvement. Selected as a Homecoming Queen, she was also voted Hunter Huss' Carousel Princess. President of both ICC and Girls' FCA. she is an officer in Civinettes. Senior Senate. and is on the French Club Executive Council. President of her junior class, she chaired the Prom Committee. As ASTRON business manager. Mary handles the financial affairs of the yearbook. A three-year player. Mary is captain of the girls' tennis team. Almost as active in Huss athletics as her father. Huss' athletic director. Donna Saine avidly follows the Husky sports program. She participates as well, serving as the center for this year's senior powder puff football team. Donna's club memberships include the Civmettes. the Girls' FCA. the Pep Club, and the Beta Club. A member of the Homecoming Court. Donna was elected to both the sophomore and junior senates and served on the Prom committee. Donna is head of the senior section of the ASTRON. An industrious worker active in both academic and social aspects of school life. Astron editor-in-chief Grace Woods spends many extra hours completing her various duties at Huss. Grace, who attended Governor's School the summer of her junior year, was a National Merit Commended Student as well as a Marshall for graduation. She is also active in several organizations, serving as secretary of the ICC and the Beta Club, and chaplain of the Civinettcs. A member of the French Club. Grace received the French Award her junior year. She has also served on the junior and senior senates as well as the prom committee. A sports enthusiast, Buddy Rogers shows his school spirit through his participation in football. He played on the junior varsity team his first year of high school, and started as defensive linebacker on the varsity team as a senior. Buddy demonstrates his leadership ability as Vice-President of the Boys' H-Club. and Secretary-Treasurer of the Key Club.
