The Launch 5-4-3-2-1-0... Blast Off!... And we are launched! Reflecting the brilliance of the morning sun Our rocket-Class '71- displaying proudly her Blue and white colors— awaits anxiously the Moment to leave home base—Hunter Huss. The preparations were tough, at times, hard to withstand. But the excitement and exhilirating joy of success, Compensated for the demands placed upon us. Aren't we truly like a rocket f Unveiled, our school is a launching pad Firing one class at a time into a much larger World of involvement. Involved are all kinds of people— Those training and those being trained. Foremost on the scene are those preparing. Those facing the complexities, demands and excitement of training-These are the students. Their success makes the program worth all the effort. Supervising and organizing are the Administration. Instilled in the Faculty is the guidance control system. As the astronauts are trained for physical fitness. So are the Athletes at Huss. The groups working behind the scenes Are the Organizations, striving to make it all a success. Those that stand out among the masses arc labeled as Personalities. Many are involved; all are important! Whether a space program or a high school. Both are preparation for an important flight. But only through an all-out effort Can the flight achieve its apex. Only through the cooperation of the whole can Man strive for and achieve the heights! PARENTS' NIGHT POWDER PUFF 40 RICK POOLE—HUSKIE IN THE SHRINE BOWL Rick Poole, the first Hunter Huss lineman to play iruthe Shrine Bowl, had an outstanding yea$, Offensively and defensively at tackle for fhe'Huskies. Rick made quite a name for hin ejf in 4-A circles for his vicious downfielcf flocking. Nearly all of Huss's running pt y Were aided by one and most of the time two patented Poole blocks. A terrific tw'b-way performer, Ole 77 will long be remembered by Huskie fans as an outstanding performer on the gridiron. -------------- 41 I KARL ENEROTH—HUSS' OWN SWEDE From the land of snow-capped mountains and the midnight sun comes a bright young man with a pleasant smile on his face and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. He is Huss' own Swede ... May we introduce to you, Karl Eneroth. Karl's American home is with Ben and Tommy Williams. He enjoys playing pool and bridge with his American brothers. Karl says he feels very much at home in America. Karl participates in Huss activities by being on the Hunter staff, in the H Club, and in the Junior Civitan Club. Certainly Karl has added much to Huss life and understanding. All that has been experienced — by him and by us — will be remembered with pleasure and joy! Karl with his American family. Karl addresses the student body. I shall long recall the year, All my friends I hold so dear” Hunter Huss Alma Mater Since April 3, 1970, the day I knew I was coming to Hunter Huss, I wondered almost continually what it would be like in Gastonia, North Carolina. Please know that the entire experience has been far beyond my expectations. A year is over. Never did I think that a year could go so fast. The time runs swiftly when one is enjoying himself. And now, I have to go back to the country where I belong ... I go back with many new experiences and insights. When I call forth some memories or look through my scrapbook, I will find things and times I shall never forget — Hunter Huss' school spirit-fantastic, the ballgames—exciting, the surprise birthday party—unexpected, the cheeseburgers—fabulous, the river—wonderful, homework—hard. Drama class— funny, the weather—hot, the H Club initiation—rough, the dating system—expensive, the cheerleaders—good looking, and my friends—the best! I am glad that I have been part of Hunter Huss High School. I give my thanks to the AFS for giving me the opportunity to come here, to join in the Huss activities and spirit, especially the spirit during ballgames which have made me happy, sad, scream, laugh, and cry. My family has been wonderful. Mom and Dad, my twin brothers Ben and Tommy, my three sisters Judy, Beth, and little Sally made me a part of the Williams family for a year. They gave me a feeling that I was one of them, a feeling I shall always cherish. Of course, I look forward to seeing all my relatives and friends in Sweden, but I shall have a special place in my heart for the many friends I leave behind me. Just looking at my school ring will bring back the many memorable experiences I had at Huss. 43 Karl learns the American way of life. Playing pool is Karl's favorite pastime. MARSHALS—1970 Each year students of Hunter Huss who have achieved a high scholastic record are selected as Marshals for the Graduation Exercises. There were nine outstanding students chosen for this honor. Nancy Foy was the Chief Marshal for 1970. The remaining eight were Left to Right — Dale Burnett, Rita Dees, Grady Ware, Tara Patton, Mary Golob, Steve Helton, Nancy Foy (chief), Mike Garrison, and Michelle Robinson. To these students we give a salute of honor for their accomplishments. 44 GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL One of the three Huss students selected to attend Governor's School, Rita Dees took French as her major course of studft She studied various novels and plays as well as taking courses offered to all itudents. Rita feels that the experience wa «mriching to her, not only as a student but also as an individual. A young man interested in the field of biology attended Governor's School this past summer. Wade Maunejy junior, studied the concepts of twentieth century discoveries in biology and advancpfjn the field of genetics. Touring the Bowman L rey Laboratories, he witnessed many of tnesfe principles being applied. Twentieth century physcology, and philosophy, and ecology w re other courses of study open to him. The 1970 Huskies started early in August practicing very hard for a championship season. However, because of a tightly bunched conference and a few big plays, the championship never came. The Huskies won three, tied one, and lost six. Four of the losses were by less than a touchdown. Giving up very few touchdowns, defense was the stronghold during the season. With the returning juniors and sophomores, the football future of Huss looks bright. Tri-Captains: Ben Williams, James Young and Bill Grissom. During football and basketball season good-luck parties were given to the players. At the end of football season a steak dinner was given for the team and coaches. Several pep rallies were held along with a bon-fire and the selling of spirit links. The varsity cheerleaders certainly contributed greatly to school spirit. Participating in other sports events, they helped the H-Club in a moneyraising project. 59 BASKETBALL TEAM Kneeling tl-lo-r): Demetrius Parker, Calvin Garvin, Ben Williams, Joe Tate, James Young, Joe Kaylor, John Hamilton. Back row: Bill Grissom, Eddie Black, Junior Holland, James Sanders, Farley McGill, Larry Hopper, Willie Hamilton, Scott Edison. This year Huskie basketball was not played with lack of height as in previous years. Big men, such as Willie Hamilton, Farley McGill, and Larry Hopper, helped bring down the important rebounds. Tri-captain James Young always had a hot hand for the Huskies. Under head coach Mac Richardson the Huskies had a slow start but at midseason showed progress and promise. The Huskie wrestlers, though plagued by some losses of key men last year, have a good shot at the title this year. Under the reins of Coach Charles Murdock, their mid-season record stood at 7-2-1. Rick Poole and Mike Muscat are the two Huskie standouts with perfect 10-0 conference marks. The Huskies, looking forward to the tournament, have shown tremendous spirit throughout the season. In the first 10 matches they had over 30 pins. With experience gained this year, the Huskies should prove to be another tough defender next year. 66 Coach Charles Murdock BASEBALL TEAM Infielders Charlie Burrel, Eddie Black, Mike Walters. Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Hiram Baucom, the 1971 edition of the Huskie baseball team will try to improve over years past. Key returners are Charlie Burrell, Larry Hopper, Doug Holmes, Al Lane, and Scott Edison. Skill combined with practice and experience will give this year's team great potential to become successful. Coach Hiram Baucom 67 Managers Ricky Watkins and Rocky Hall. 68 Sieve Bowen larry Hopper GOLF TEAM This year's Huskie golf team hopes to achieve the success of last year's championship team. With patience, skill, and a little luck the Huskie golfers will be able to achieve their goal. Returning from last year's team are Tony Hollifield, Torben Seear, Davis Patton, Curtis Elliot, and Tom Delfino. If these golfers play up to expectations, the Huskie team will remain as one of the top teams in the state. Indeed they are worthy representatives of school spirit. 1 Cjthy Holland Anita Moore J.V. FOOTBALL Coaches Ken Brumley, Mac Richardson, Waller Davis. As my work of putting the Astron together draws to a close, I feel the joy which accompanies the completion of a task, one which seemed at times to be not only overwhelming but also impossible. Never shall I forget the school pictures arriving two davs after our first deadline and the fourteen hours we spent here on a weekend trying to complete those class sections; at the same time I shall never forget the unselfish offers of help from various staff members who had completed their own deadlines and the combined efforts of the staff to produce a meaningful yearbook. Truly, this year has been one of memorable and rewarding experiences. There are so many people deserving of praise for their contributions. I can never thank the staff enough for their enthusiasm and determination, for surely they are the ones who produced the yearbook. I sincerely appreciate the cooperation given us by the faculty and administration; particularly do I wish to thank the Astron advisors, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. Cannon, for their constant assistance. There are three men on the faculty who volunteered their services but who never realized the time and effort we would require of them, so to Mr. Allran, Mr. Stuart, and Mr. Thomas, I give my heartfelt thanks! The Astron staff has attempted to portray life at Huss in such a way that all can see its relevance to the space age. Proudly we present Astron 71 to you with the hope that we have accomplished our purpose. In Grateful Appreciation To Our PATRONS A. B.
